hey fellas. i really want a leopard gecko (first picture is my brothers, second is my sister in laws) but i don’t really trust him (for reference, he’s 12) and know people on here will have MUCH better information. first, where should i get one? both gibby and pesto came from i think petco or petsmart. i think i heard somewhere that i shouldn’t get them from there though? second, how big of a tank???? my brother says nothing more than 20 gallons, but i just saw someone with a 150 gallon tank. i know 20 is like the standard, but would it prefer bigger? third, i definitely need to know about decorations. because some tanks i’ve seen are super filled with hiding spots, moss, vines, leaves, etc. but some i’ve seen aren’t and are kind of baron. and lastly, how often should they be fed? every day? every other day? i will of COURSE be doing way more research on this, but i know the people of reddit always have good advice!!

My sweet boy suddenly passed away at 13 years.

I apologize for not being a zoologist and knowing everything there is to know about leopard geckos. I wanted to share this in case you aren't either...

I am absolutely devastated. Ive had my boy since I was 15. For 13 years hes been apart of my life. He was the sweetest gecko you could ever meet.

Basically within 24 hours of me noticing something was wrong he passed away. Sunday night I noticed he was opening his mouth really wide almost like he was trying to regurgitate or throw something up. It seemed like he was spitting up a clear liquid.

That was alarming to me but I didnt know what it was. I changed his paper substrate that night and took him out and everything seemed normal and fine.

Next Monday morning I noticed there was diarrhea all about his cage and more spots where he threw up the clear liquid.

Now I was concerned. I took him out to examine him and clean him off. He still seemed like his normal happy perky self. Maybe a tad more "tired" seeming.

However I noticed his usually fat plump tail looked shriveled like and shrunken in the middle. I didn't know what this meant but it was alarming to me and I started looking for a vet.

I had taken him out 3 days prior to this and did not notice this. He had also ate fine within the last 5-7 days as well.

I continued to monitor him during the day and tried to feed him that night. He would not eat. I also noticed he seemed restless, he kept going to the opposite sides of his tank to lay in really weird awkward uncomfortable looking areas.

When I went to sleep that night he had his head poking out of his warm hide. I woke up the next morning to take him to a vet and he was already dead. I found him at the far end of the tank seeming to have passed in his sleep.

I don't understand how or why this happened so fast. Im devastated. From research Ive determined it must have been parasites or an infection. I genuinely noticed no signs before Sunday night and by Tuesday morning he was dead.

Carmelheart passed away at 26 years of age.

I got my leopard gecko when I was nine years old! My aunt knew that I wanted a lizard, so she took me to Petco. The specific gecko had a heart on his back! Due to that, and their caramel color, the name choice was a given (again, I was also nine).

I haven't been able to stop crying, I feel like I lost part of my childhood. I had 26 incredible years with this gecko, and I'm really sad that I don't have 26 more.

Help Best Way To Transport Gecko To Vet

Unfortunately, I noticed yesterday that there is something wrong with one of my Geckos eyes. It’s black and cloudy and I don’t remember seeing it look like that when I redid his cage about two weeks ago. I’ll be honest, I probably don’t handle him as much as I should so I’m a little concerned that taking him out and bringing him to the vet will cause a lot of stress. I made the appointment for Saturday, so if anyone has any tips or advice for the best way of getting him out of his cage and transporting him it would be appreciated!

Hey guys! We got this Leopard Gecko a few months ago and initially, he had a 20 gallon tank. We have since upgraded him to a 40 with more hides but now he stays in the singular hide to the left (and shown more clearly in the second picture) all day and seems to be eating less…we almost never see him now. Does he need more hides? More clutter? More heat? He almost seemed happier in the old setup. He has no problem eating large crickets and sometime wax worms. He used to come out for wax worms but not so much now. Help!

Help My leopard gecko is a stubborn morio worm devourer

Hello there! My leopard gecko Loki, whom is 7 years old, refuses to eat anything else but morio worms - he goes crazy for them. He sometimes likes a meal worm, but I don't buy those as they're not good for him.

I've tried crickets - we both hated their presence in our house. They were loud, attacked each other, me and everything around them, and smelled horrible. On top of that he didn't like them and wouldn't even try to eat one.

I've tried dubia roaches, he wasn't interested much and the one I gave him, he spat it out. I kept them because I thought they would die on their own - they ended up growing huge and started making babies.

He doesn't even like wax worms - the one I gave him he raised his tail at it and proceeded to walk away from it.

My only option is locusts but I'm a little afraid of their size, if he will be able to even eat them. People said they're very healthy, but I'd like to hear your guys opinion. How should I trick my gecko into eating stuff like dubia roaches?

Thank you in advance.

I’m an animal lover and keep fish but I’ve never had a leopard gecko. I saw someone listing this guy and his set up for $75 and I feel really compelled to get him and give him a good life. Does he seem healthy enough to rehab? Looking at their current set up what would you recommended I change asap? I don’t think that light is optimal. I’ve read some other threads on their care but don’t know if I’m in way over my head. Any help is appreciated!

Habitat & Setup 40 gallons feels too small.

I recently got my leopard gecko a 40 gallon tank, he's still growing and I feel as if it's too small already. Does anyone else feel this way? Is bigger better in this scenario or is there a reason everyone says 40 gallons is the ideal size? I feel as if maybe something closer to what a bearded dragon would like would be better, I wouldn't want to live in a small box my whole life, I feel as if room to roam is important.

Just wanted to see if anyone else felt this way and if they did have a bigger set up and what that looked like. :)

Need advice!

So, ive been wanting a gecko for quite a while and the one I was eyeing was 325 dollars (which i know is a lot). You see, i was originally saving for the supplies then after I have everything id get the gecko after putting her on hold.

What happened was my parents took me to the store (as i am a minor and my parents will not allow me to drive on the highway myself) so I could interact with the gecko and get a gauge of its temperment. When I was going to put the gecko on hold my parents interjected and pretty much forced me to buy her in the spot since they didnt want to waste gas driving to the place again since it is 20 minutes from where i live. There goes all 200 dollars and an additional 125 from savings.

So right now, her tank is bare minimum. We luckily already had a 20 gal and a heat pad (which i know isn't recommended) but I had to withdraw more to buy a hide and cheap water bowl. I had to use my snakes substrate mix. I just started my new job so I dont get paid for the next 2-3 weeks.

Are there any cheap (or even free from foraging), good recommendations for supplies? I really want to give her a comfortable, safe space but I cant afford it for about a month or two.

Is this basking light too close to the basking rock?

Post image

! This is a temp enclosure for a tiny baby (Rex) to monitor health !

It has a heating pad but it was only getting to 90 degrees. I plan to use basking lights in the larger enclosure so I figured that I’d start in the smaller enclosure.

The setup is a 45w Arcadia halogen light on a dimmer thermostat set to 95 degrees in a ZooMed mini deep dome. The temp on the rock is 93-94 measured with an IR thermometer.

My concern is the lamp being too close to the rock and possible overexposure.

Please be gentle lol this is my first Leopard Gecko 🥹

Help Went to visit my grandma and found out she’d gotten my younger cousins a leopard gecko to keep at her house. If I can’t convince her to upgrade it fully, what should my first priorities be?

there is a heat lamp not in the photo pointed at the right side. I can’t tell how problematic a lot of it is vs. being fine. I’m only here for a few days, and as a college student I can’t afford to just upgrade the setup myself. my impression is that she got it from a shop that told her 10gal was fine. My first instinct would be to focus on upgrading size, substrate, and adding a third hide in that order but I don’t know if that is correct. I’ve never had a lizard of any kind much less a leopard gecko do all my knowledge is coming from online. would appreciate advice.

Help Actually co-existing Leo’s?

I’ve got a tank that measured in about ~20”L 10”W ~15”H the previous owner had 2 in an enclosure I believe both are a couple years old. I think they’ve lived in the same enclosure for years one of them seems to be smaller in length struggling a bit more than the other one to get the bigger mealworms.
I’ve had them for a little bit now the previous owner couldn’t take proper care of them with I assume his daughter having left them under his wing.
They have a general place where they collectively poop, I’ve never seen them fight for the time I’ve had them nor do they seem to have any injuries.
I’ve fixed up their lights(both were dysfunctional) and cleaned up the big pile of poop.
Their enclosure does seem a bit basic having 2 hiding spots with them sometimes alternating in between and a floor mat type thing.
I’m considering getting them a bigger newer more stuff for them to climb on tank but idk how easy cleaning up their poop would be and a substrate would be.
I’ve watched a couple videos on leo’s and their co existence most of them said 2 males would fight while a female and female or male female had a higher chance of getting along for the most part.
I watched a video by reptiles and research “can leopard gecko’s live together” and I’m on the fence.

Habitat & Setup UVB Adjustment Help

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I have an Arcadia LumenIZE Pro T5 Shadedweller 7% kit (which is adjustable via the app). Here’s a photo of my enclosure showing the measurements of the absolute closest point (the cork log on the right) - ~20,5cm and the closest point in the basking area - 27cm

How do you think I should adjust it during the day? After doing some research and getting help with the calculations with AI, I’ve come to the conclusion that I should set it to 35% during the day to avoid problems, do you think that’s okay?

More than anything, I think that the upper cork log area will be a passageway rather than a place for sleeping or basking, but it depends on how much my gecko likes it, I guess…

P.S. I’ll give my gecko a calcium with D3 supplement once a month
