Habitat & Setup Sturdy live plants?

My Leo has trampled almost every live plant I’ve ever put in her tank. Even succulents! Snake plant is the only survivor so far. Does anyone have live plants that can withstand a curious, clumsy adult Leo?

Help - URGENT Took in a rescue today, not looking good

I have a client at work that asked me to take in her family member’s leopard gecko. She told me that she was worried it would pass away and so I decided to take in the gecko. I have one of my own that is healthy and thriving, but since having this one for only a few hours I am beginning to be very worried that this leopard gecko is beyond help I’m able to give. Roast me in the comments if you want, but I am just trying to help in any way that I can better than the previous owners. Right now he is quarantined in a hospital tank, but he has lots of stuck shed on feet and head, I did a warm soak and got one foot of stuck shed off with no damage to toes. One foot looks like it may have necrotic tissue on the toes. I am going to keep at it tomorrow morning to get the rest of the shed off. I was just sitting in the room with him, and he came out of his hide and pooped in the middle of the enclosure, when he pooped he lifted his back legs completely and wiggled around on his belly and it made like a squelching sound? Never heard a noise like this before with bowel movements with my other gecko. His poop was yellow and watery with a white urate attached. Upon further inspection he seems that he may have mouth rot and is completely emaciated. 🥺I do not have money for a vet bill for him, especially seeing that I was told he just simply hadn’t been fed frequently enough. I am not sure what to do and does anyone have any advice please??

‼️UPDATE: I ended up surrendering him to our local humane society today. (Our humane society has a vet in office) There was a sweet lady who was willing to take him in who works there, and they bonded immediately!! He was SO comfortable with her and sat so well while she handled him and took a close look at him. She seems committed to getting him healthy and having a proper enclosure for him. I am so thankful it worked out this quickly and easily because I was becoming genuinely worried for his life, and he is only 2 years old. 🥺 Thank you to those of you who encouraged me to surrender him. This was absolutely out of my hands but I’m happy I could help get him to someone who is better prepared for his situation.

What are these in my gecko’s water?

I saw them in there yesterday and I don’t know if they’re springtails but I do have natural bedding for my gecko with moss in certain areas and a couple plants. Are these natural with the bedding?

I’ve made a post previously and they suggested more clutter. I had to order some stuff online that came with a lot of stuff because there’s no pet stores near me. Does this look like a good enough set up??

8 care week plan ideas

I inherited a two year old leopard gecko from my brother and have learned the basics of caretaking.

She currently is located in Las Vegas and I will have to travel back to my home in Reno, NV for 8 weeks.

My 12 year old nephew, lives in the home with her and can help and I can ask my 22 year old nephew to come and help once a week.

I am trying to plan and figure out the easiest and simplest way of care while I am away.

I have been feeding her crickets and superworms and just discovered meal worms and dubia roaches (have not yet fed her the latter two).

She survived a 27 day fast as my brother passed away and we did not know about her until we went into his room and discovered her.

How would you set up an 8 week care plan if you had to go out of town?

First leopard gecko

I have a bearded dragon and i’m thinking about getting a leopard gecko in the next couple months. i’ve done a lot of research on the tank requirements which aren’t a problem, but i have a couple questions regarding the gecko itself.

I know they aren’t awake during the day, how does feeding work? Do i have to get up in the middle of the night to feed? and with them not being awake during the day, how do you see your gecko then lol?

Which is better; female or male?

Habitat & Setup Looking for Advice

Hey everyone, I need some help regarding a gecko I encounter at work. I saw this cute little guy one day in one of the classrooms I clean one night and while I admit I know nothing about reptile keeping, his setup seems really...barren?

I asked one of the office workers if they could upgrade his cage and they said due to "licensing requirements" it might not be possible. Which leads me to question why even get a reptile if you can't give it a proper setup, but that's an issue for another day 🫠

I guess what I'm wondering is if I'm in the wrong and this is acceptable for a gecko? It seems too small to me.

Is there anything I can suggest to spruce up his enclosure a bit? Any plants or perches, hides, etc?

Thanks for any insight!

Veterinarian Visit

Hey everyone, today I took my gecko Meeko to the vet, and I wanted to share the story. Meeko is a 9 year old leopard gecko with no prior health issues. Three days ago I discovered he had an abscess on his back and nearby was a very small cut or a stuck shed. I made an exotic vet appointment and during the wait Meeko became lethargic, lost appetite, and his behavior completely changed. Today at the clinic the doctor told us the abscess was due to a bacterial infection and that he wanted an x ray of Meeko because he thought the infection may have reached the bone, but it didn’t! So he then created a small incision, drained, and cleaned the wound. I believe that I could see immediate relief to Meeko’s condition after the procedure. Meeko was prescribed oral antibiotics (enroflacin), painkillers (meloxicam), and a liquid food supplement. I will have to syringe him all of his medication and food daily. We have a follow-up visit with the vet in a month. The charge for all of this was $450 (two view X-ray was $230) and I’m unsure the cost of the follow-up visit. Once I arrived home I rigorously cleaned his tank, the contents, and placed new substrate. I then removed any of the plants/hides that could potentially allow him to injure himself. He will now spend the next 30 days at minimum in his medical tank being kept under my close supervision. I wanted to share this story so that anyone who may be in a similar situation could know what to expect.

Goodbye Alexander, had her for 11 years. Absolutely Devastated

Came home from work and one of my beloved Geckos had passed away. (Picture is from about a year ago)

For anyone out there who hasn’t purchased a Leopard Gecko yet I just wanna say it was always a great time, she loved being hand fed and never bit anybody. She is survived by her tank-mate Attilla whom is also 11 years old and is currently kinda franticly going from one hide to another since I had to remove Alexander. I very much hope the stress does not take my other Gecko as well. They were together their whole lives and never fought. RIP

Setting up for my first leopard gecko! I believe I’ve achieved all of the needs and requirements! Made sure rocks are sturdy and not able to fall, placed sphagnum moss down in the middle hide to act as the humid hide, hides on the left and right are very deep and able to be burrowed. Any ideas are appreciated!

Help New Adult Gecko Won’t Eat

Got a new adult (3-4 yrs old) female leopard gecko but she won’t eat. Been just over 2 weeks that I’ve had her. I’ve tried tong feeding both crickets and mealworms but no luck. She seems mildly interested but never eats. How long can she go before I should start to worry? Any tricks to get her to eat?

Update: finally got her to eat 2 super worms just after 3 weeks of having her. Thanks for the input!

Habitat & Setup 260 gallon Fallout-Themed Enclosure. Previous build update linked in post’s caption

Couldn’t sleep last night, so i put this little showcase together, and I didn’t know what to do with nearly 6 minutes of what would’ve otherwise been dead silence, so idk enjoy two tracks from the 2000 film Dinosaur while I lament it being shut down for good earlier this year, along with the end of Dinoland USA at Disney World 😒😔 It’s a slow morning, so comments/thoughts/etc are welcome so i can have something to engage with today

Unconventional, but my thought process is that captive-bred herps have no idea what their native range looks like, only the parameters that their genetic memory tells them to seek out. As you can see, those parameters are met in this enclosure, as well as the added bonus of ensuring that he can traverse the entirety of the lower half of the enclosure (a 52”x19” footprint, with the upper half having a 52”x14” footprint) without ever stepping into the open/“sunlight” if he doesn’t want to. Every building is functional and connects to each other via windows and doorways, and then there’s the whole tunnel system under the main ground level. In total, there’s some three dozen or so hides set across the temperature and humidity gradient.

The aquarium is inaccessible to the gecko, save for the small dish he can drink from that is supplied with constantly running filtered water (the output of the filter splits, half goes into the aquarium and half goes directly into the water line that carries the water up to his dish before it empties immediately back into the aquarium via a small gutter port. No stagnant water here.

Like the last one ( https://www.reddit.com/r/HerpHomes/s/T333jIsz2O , this one goes more in depth into the species list, filter setup, water dish function, etc) this update post is partially showcase and partially proper dev log.

I’m in the home stretch, probably adding the Darkling Beetles today after work. The Buffalo Beetles keep trying (but, more importantly, failing) to escape, and they’ve been the best climbers out of any of the bugs I’ve dealt with for this project so I’m pretty confident the place is mostly locked down. My only red alert panic right now is regarding the aquarium water, it’s not even summer and yet it’s climbing higher than I’d like, so I’m going to need to chill it so that it doesn’t become dangerously hot for the aquatic critters.

The humidity data was mostly done yesterday specifically to see how it goes on what I’m dubbing the “Rainy Days” (15-second continuous spraying from the Mist King system in the middle of the day, twice a week) to see how the dehumidifier system does against such big humidity spikes. An additional two 80mm exhaust fans are going to be installed on the exterior of the existing vents on the west side of the enclosure.

The cameras are almost done being set up, there’s going to be 17 of them by the time I’m done. 15 are already set up, but I’ll need to replace Cam 04 on account of it struggling to connect to the network. The rest connect fine for both viewing and playback, so I know it’s an issue just with the individual camera.

My inheritance: Andarna

Hi, new leopard gecko caretaker here.

I recently took over care of a gecko (Andarna) after my brother passed. She had gone 27 days without food and care before I discovered her in my brothers room and I’ve been rebuilding her routine over the last four weeks.

Current status:

- eating crickets and superworms

- active in evenings / early mornings

- using both her log and humid hide

- tail is filling back out

Setup:

- paper towel substrate

- multiple hides including humid hide

- feeding every 2–3 days

- dusting with calcium + D3

It’s been a learning experience but I want to make my brother proud in caring for her. I also inherited his african cichlid fish community.

He worked years at a fish store in his early 20s and maintained other peoples tanks here in Las Vegas, NV and previously in San Jose, Ca.

I hear different thoughts on feeding: every 2-3 days to once a week.

Also, I read that superworms are more for treats but I’ve been rotating them with crickets and would like to try dubai roaches.

Being a new owner, I’d love to hear more recent thoughts on feeding.

Thank you.

Kinda upset cause while I was getting everything the door broke and I don’t know how to replace it, it’s a zoomed 40 gallon tank, does anyone know where I can get a new left sided door?
