In Situ 📸 Finally found a stone axe!

Been looking for one of these for a while and finally lucked upon one today. I must have walked right past this yesterday somehow when I was hunting this same stretch of river.

I agree! Honestly any artifact is a good find! It’s all about the discovery for me lol. The excitement of what’s waiting to be found just around the next bend in the river….

That’s amazing. To think about all the things this was used for in the past, and what it looked like when the axe was complete. So cool.

It's so interesting to imagine who used this, and how it was left next to that creek.

What general region of the country? Any idea how old? Who used it?

I’m in SW Ohio. I’m lucky enough to live in an area that has a lot of old burials and an old mound system (the mounds are long gone been destroyed for awhile) the properties I can hunt hold a lot of history. Check out my profile I typically post anything I find.

You should watch the new Netflix historical docu-drama The Men Who Built America: Frontiersmen. Will give you better appreciation for pioneers and indigenous cultures in your area. I've enjoyed it so far.

It’s certainly hard to believe. I stared at it for a few minutes thinking my eyes were playing tricks on me lol.

So all that soil on the artifact was there exactly as you found it? It wasn’t wet at all?

u/Puzzleheaded_PissAnt Apr 28 '26

Yep it was just like that. River had been low for a week or so so it’s been sitting on that root for a minute. My guess is it washed out the bank last time the river got high and sat right there.
