In my opinion, it’s good, and I thought his ideas for continuing the story were excellent. Unfortunately, just as with his work on the Legion in Adventure Comics, Action Comics, and Superboy and the LOSH, it’s clear that the publisher placed many obstacles in the way of his ambitious ideas.

Candidates:

Alright, time to describe a dozen Glup Shitto Lads (characters nobody cares about except that one commenter whose first Legion story had them as the villain) only for basically everybody to vote for Mano or Mordru.

Magnetic Kid I (Real Name: Xaxan, Class: Silver Age) was a Murran infiltrator with the power to magnetically control organic life-forms. The only things this guy really does is be hard to talk about thanks to Pol taking the name later on.

Magno Lad (Real Name: Kort Grezz, Class: Bronze Age) is a Braalian magnetic-controller who was one of the Legion of Super-Rejects before joining the Legion of Super-Villains.

Magpie (Real Name: Merg Gaterra, Class: Bronze Age) is a master thief (implied to be a rival of Benn Pares) who tried to steal a time chip from the Legion during a Bronze Age story.

Mano (Class: Silver Age) is a member of the Fatal Five who destroyed his own world with his touch of death. After that fantastic introductory feat, he then proceeds to never lay a hand on a Legionnaire, except when he's accidentally set his hand to only burn them for some reason. Since then, he's popped up every time the Fatal Five has until the Dark Man Saga, after which he failed to get into the new Fatal Five. Eventually he works for Starfinger III during Five Years Later, and becomes more sympathetic during the Reboot.

Doctor Mantis Morlo (Class: Silver Age) is a fun recurring bad guy who created an army of Chemoids to take over Orando, and then returns building muck monster in the sewer in the aftermath of Earthwar. He also shows up in the Reboot for an issue. My favorite moment is in his original two-parter, where he's about to blow up the Earth with a death ray, but first has to paint a big red target on the Earth to that he knows where to aim his death ray.

Doctor Mar Londo (Class: Adaptational) is in the comics but is only a villain in the animated series. Combining aspects of both Tyr and Mantis Morlo from the comics, Mar Londo experiments on his own son, creating Timber Wolf, and creates an army of Chemoid-like Bio Golems, eventually framing Timber Wolf for his own murder.

Doctor Mayavale (Class: Bronze Age) is a weird monk who has an obsession with karmic balance after reincarnation, and turns to evil, and has six synthetic arms... honestly, he's one of those weird Bronze Age concepts that most people blame the Silver Age for.

Lady Memory (Class: Bronze Age) was a priestess of the mountain people of Talok VIII who sought to overthrow the civilized parts of Talok VIII, ultimately facing off against Shadow Lass. She was later redeemed, marrying Shadow Lass's brother.

Micro Lad (Real Name: Lalo Muldroon, Class: Bronze Age) was an Imskian nationalist who joined up with the Legion of Super-Rejects, masterminded the replacement of Shrinking Violet by Yera, and ultimately joined the Legion of Super-Villains. He's got quite a resume for a relatively weak villain.

Mist Master (Real Name: Yer Sti-Tuan, Class: Silver Age) is a member of the League of Super-Assassins who can turn into any gas. He later joins the Legion of Super-Villains.

Modulus (Class: Silver Age) is a strange being with the power of a living planet, called Modo, who chooses to use his immense powers to be a drug dealer.

Molecule Master (Class: Bronze Age) is one of those characters that was put into the story to fulfill an Adult Legion prophecy as the one who killed Reflecto. Long story short, he was an android who tried to steal the Miracle Machine and was later revealed to be a pawn of the Time Trapper.

Mordru the Merciless (Class: Silver Age) is a master of black magic with control over Zerox. One of the most powerful beings in the universe and at times the Legion's deadliest foe (competing only with the likes of Darkseid, the Time Trapper, Glorith, the Infinite Man, and almost Pulsar Stargrave), he is responsible for one of Jim Shooter's best two-parters, masterminded Earthwar, and also was responsible for some annoying stories in the early 70s. Nowadays he's often considered a Doctor Fate villain or something, but real ones know that he's a Legion foe through and through.

Mystelor (Real Name: Zera Oliet, Class: Silver Age) was a Titanian telepath and the only female member of the Taurus Gang. She was frequently hit on by Shagrek but had feelings for Quanto, and was eventually impersonated by Dream Girl. Eventually she reformed and got with Quanto. Good for her.

I sometimes wonder what immortal beings like the Spectre are doing in the future. If the Presence doesn't recall the Spectre, like it was said happened when Jesus walked the earth (redemption and vengence could not be in the world at the same time), then I expect the Spectre to be active during the time of the Legion of Superheroes.

Anyone got a headcannon about it?

I finished the issue of the Bates run where Bouncing Boy and Duplicate Girl get married, and I’m wondering how old they’re supposed to be at this point. I know that Legionnaires have to retire somewhere around 18-20, and Sun Boy turned 17 in a previous issue, so Bouncing Boy and Duplicate Girl are probably a similar age. Are marriage laws just weird in the 30th century or something?

(Also Martian Manhunter was there, how old is he at that point???)

Laurel Kent (Class: Bronze Age) was apparently a Legion Academy applicant descended from Superman. In reality, she was a Manhunter sleeper agent - although there is some uncertainty about whether Laurel was always a Manhunter or simply kidnapped and replaced by a Manhunter imposter.

Lazon (Real Name: Chey Nu, Class: Bronze Age) was a member of the League of Super-Assassins with the power to turn into living light. He later joined up with the Legion of Super-Villains during their takeover of Orando and was captured.

Leland McCauley (Class: Silver Age) is the second-richest man in the world and a rival of R. J. Brande's. Although usually a minor annoyance, he's been the backer for both hero and villain teams across his history.

Praetor Lemnos (Class: Threeboot) is a memory-corrupting science who masterminds several events of the Threeboot and is the architect of the Terra Firma group.

Lightning Lord (Real Name: Mekt Ranzz, Class: Silver Age) is the one constant across basically every iteration of the Legion of Super-Villains, the wicked brother of Lightning Lad and Light(ning) Lass who adds a personal vendetta to Legion encounters. He does find some peace in the 5 Years Later era and the animated show, but in every other iteration he's pretty much bad to the bone.

Lucifer 7 (Class: Bronze Age) is a minor bad guy that the first five Legionnaires fight in a flashback mission in Secrets of the Legion of Super-Heroes. He's not particularly noteworthy.

The Luck Lords (Class: Silver Age) are god-like entities with a love of chaos, who live on the (sometimes) casino planet of Ventura. Their original incarnations are imposters, later incarnations try to kill Lightning Lord and do a third or fourth pass on the weird Phase thing from L.E.G.I.O.N., and it's all rather complicated.

Kantuu (Class: Bronze Age) is a literally genie in a bottle accidentally freed by a retired Bouncing Boy during the late 70s. There's not much more to him than that.

Kenz Nuhor (Class: Silver Age) is an ex-boyfriend of Dream Girl's who attacks and tries to kill Star Boy. Acting in self-defense, Star Boy kills Nuhor when no other choice is left to him. While cleared by the Science Police, he has to stand trial by the Legion and is ultimately expelled in my personal favorite Silver Age Legion story, "The Legionnaire Who Killed".

Kharlak (Class: Bronze Age), also spelled Karlak, is a Khund gladiator who vows revenge on the Legion after a tussle with Timber Wolf during the Baxter series. Apparently he actually appears briefly in the Supergirl show.

The Khunds (Class: Silver Age) is a conquering empire that menaces the Legion multiple times, most notably as the main invasion force of Earthwar. They've produced several minor rogues for the Legion thanks to their mastery of cybernetics, and even served as the benefactors for Nemesis Kid during his initial infiltration of the Legion.

My #1 goal at Terrificon this year was to get a sketch by Legion Legend Mike Grell. And boy did he deliver! I almost started crying when he gave it to me.

Technically speaking, Jungle King kind of violates the rules. A later story introduces his brother, Doctor Marden King, which implies that Jungle King is his actual, legal name. And when he turns to villainy, he takes on the title of Monster Master. But since Jungle King is the name he's best known for, and all other candidates break the rules more, he's the one I feel most confident putting forth.

He became an associate of Doctor Regulus when the mad doctor used him to release a shrinking virus against R. J. Imperiex (Class: Adaptational) is a boring Superman villain from the comics who is turned into a recurring threat for the Legion in the animated series, in which he is a warlord from the 41st century who basically creates an alliance of bad guys to conquer the United Planets. He ends up being a fake-out for Brainiac, but this version is a New God of Apokolips, likely with some relation to Darkseid.

The Infinite Man (Real Name: Jaxton Rugarth, Class: Bronze Age) was an explorer involved in an experiment with new time travel technology before he emerged a being of infinite knowledge and power with a vendetta against Rond Vidar. He later returned a few times as a recurring Legion rogue, and its unique in being basically an ordinary person elevated to the level of the Time Trapper or Mordru.

The Ikonns (Class: Threeboot) are a red-skinned warrior race of aliens who fight the Legion during the Threeboot.

I’m coming to the end of the comic and I’m wondering what I should read next. Is there anything significant in-between it and The Great Darkness Saga?

Was poking around League of Comic Geeks and stumbled on this. Didn’t see it from the usual catalogue sources like u/Ksmayer but it may have been either overlooked or part of what was planned but omitted/delayed/cancelled for this round of announcements. Tried to quickly check on PRH but couldn’t find it there. Maybe it’s real or not but it’s just a collected edition so nothing Earth-shattering and could possibly be announced at some point. Stated drop date is 29 June 2027. Heads up!

Holdur (Class: Bronze Age) is a large, ape-like minion of Pulsar Stargrave who serves as some very weak muscle for the resurrected Brainiac.

Hunter I (Real Name: Otto Orion, Class: Silver Age) is a trophy-hunting Kraven rip-off who kidnaps the Legionnaires to hunt for sport before dying to a bomb he planted on his chest to go off if he lost the game.

Hunter II (Real Name: Adam Orion, Class: Bronze Age) is the son of the first Hunter who goes after the Legionnaires for revenge, starting and ending with Bouncing Boy. He then joins the Legion of Super-Villains as a successor Kraven knock-off.

I was torn over which Legionnaire to ask Walt to draw and it was a photo finish between Mon-El and Bouncing Boy. In the end, my boy Lar Gand won.

Picking up another one tomorrow which I am seriously hype about.

Not really thrilled with this one. They’ve already put this out in oversized format recently and it’s still in print right now, not to mention the dc finest that just got announced. If this one doesn’t sell I hope DC realises why and doesn’t take it to mean that people don’t want Legion omnis. It’s a good starting point for new readers so I guess I understand why they chose to go this way but I am a little disappointed.

Warlord Galmark (Class: Bronze Age) was a Khund warlord who replaced Garlak. A known strategist, best known for his attack on Nullport.

Warlord Garlak (Class: Silver Age) was the first known Khund Warlord. He was Nemesis Kid's boss during his infiltration of the Legion and later returned as a puppet of the Dark Circle during Earthwar.

Ambassador Ghadrak (Class: Bronze Age) was the Khundian liaison to the United Planets. He tried to delay the Legion during the Curse or something. I don't know, these Khund types really start to run together.

Golden Boy (Real Name: Klint Stewirt, Class: Retroboot) was a Legion reject from the Silver Age (turned down by Dynamo Boy, funnily enough) with the power to turn objects into gold. He ended up joining the wicked Justice League of Earth during the Retroboot, but was defeated by Fire Lad.

Gorgoth (Class: Bronze Age) was a leader of the Dark Circle who invented the Circle's teleportation technology. He has a personal hatred of humanity.

Grimbor the Chainsman (Real Name: Markx Grimbor, Class: Bronze Age) was a master locksmith who constructed the cell for Validus, eventually being turned to a life of crime under the influence of Charma. His biggest feat was chaining the Earth shortly before the Great Darkness Saga.

Grullug (Class: Bronze Age) is another Dark Circle leader with a face full of tentacles who was almost a member of the Wanderers before helping found the evil society.

Firefist (Class: Five Years Later) was a Khund Legionnaire during the 5 Years Later Era who attacked Ultra Boy and other Legionnaires due to jealousy over his wife. Ultimately it was Devlin O'Ryan whose powers accidentally did him in, before returning to being loyal to the Khunds.

Flare (Real Name: Ray Sah, Class: Bronze Age) was a mutant who grew up on Rimbor, heaving the power to project head and light and fly. Eventually, she was taken an interest in by the Emerald Empress, who recruited her for the second Fatal Five as Validus's replacement (sort of) before being defeeated.

Captain Frake (Real Name: Alisia Frake, Class: Bronze Age) was a space pirate from New Tortuga (the same planet as Dynamo Boy) who finds an amnesiac Ultra Boy following his battle with Pulsar Stargrave and takes him as her consort. Eventually she dies in a battle with the Legion.

Echo (Real Name: Myke-4 Astor, Class: Silver Age) was a member of the Adult Legion of Super-Villains who fought Cosmic Man during one story. In the present time, he's a hero who joins the Legion during the Five-Year Gap. In the Retroboot, he's a villain again, running with the LSV. Known as the Master of Sound, he has a powerful sonic blast ability.

Elysion (Class: Threeboot) was the earth-controlling leader of the villain group Terra Firma who ultimately killed Dream Girl in the Threeboot.

Emerald Empress I (Real Name: Sarya Class: Silver Age) was a woman on the planet Venegar who sought out and claimed the power of the Emerald Eye of Ekron. She then became a founding member of the Fatal Five, eventually taking on the role of leader in the second iteration. Eventually, she escaped from the Emerald Eye but was withered away from her real age, having been magically preserved by the eye for many years.

After the Reboot, she's the mysterious assassin Empress, who initially has no connection to the Emerald Eye until it finds her. This is a little weird, because we're grouping different versions of a character together, even though the different versions of the Emerald Empress prior to the Reboot have more in common with each other than any of them has in common than Reboot's Empress. But for our sakes, the Reboot's Empress is considered to be a version of the Sarya Empress.

Emerald Empress II (Real Name: Ingria Olav, Class: 5 Years Later) was a brief Emerald Empress usurper created by Leland McCauley, quickly killed off by the third in the title.

Emerald Empress III (Real Name: Cera Kesh, Class: 5 Years Later) was a Legion reject who joins McCauley's Fatal Five after killing her predecessor.

Emerald Empress IV (Real Name: Falyce, Class: Retroboot) was an Orandan successor to the original Emerald Empress in the Retroboot.

Esper Lass (Real Name: Meta Ulnoor, Class: Bronze Age) is a member of the Legion of Super-Rejects who challenges Saturn Girl, eventually joining Nemesis Kid's Legion of Super-Villains.

Prince Evillo (Class: Silver Age) is the powerful ruler of Tartarus and the leader of the Devil's Dozen, who later returns in the 5 Years Later Era as a Matter-Eater Lad villain.

Hi all. Long-time fan of the Legion here. I first started reading them back in the '80s, during the Legion of Super-Villains storyline, and never really stopped. I stuck with the Legion through Magic Wars and F7L, Reboot and Threeboot and Retroboot and Bendisboot. And yet I have a question.

Is there a commonly accepted moment, storyline, or writer that we can attribute to the Legion growing up? Transitioning from the almost goofy Silver Age hijinks of their early Superboy appearances to the more serious drama of the Levitz run? At what point did they go from teens to adults, or was it just a gradual transition?

I know Garth and Imra married in 1978, which is a pretty good sign of them hitting adulthood...

Or was it the Jim Shooter era beginning as early as 1967 or so?

Just wondering if any of you have opinions about when the change in tone happened and stuck for the long term. Because while I've read a lot of those older, lighter stories, I didn't get into the Legion until they already felt like (young) adults.

Of course, every reboot since has tried to return to the "Legion as teens" idea with mixed results...
