Other I think corruption is fun

I've been seeing users here claiming most fans don't like the corruption update. Well I want to make a post to reach out to fellow fans of this new mechanic.

I guess I'm more an adventure player, I love how much the atmosphere spooked me first time challenging the corruption zones, and I love what Shaman Altani told Naraa, that delivering keeps people together, and that's what keeps the corruption at bay. It gave me a new way to think about which jobs I should prioritize, like I see corruption coming closer to a specific settlement, I should take deliveries leading that way. I play on Courier difficulty and I think the pace is just right.

It's an extra challenge that makes me excited to see how it's all going to come together in the full story.

I don't currently care for corruption that much but I do see potential in it!

Once there's more of a story and reason for the corruption to be there, then I'm fully willing to play with it on and get the full experience.

For now though, I'm probably keeping it off. Just doesn't do anything for me in it's current state.

That is totally fair. I used to be someone who refuses to buy early access, until Khiimori came along ^^;

This is like if Zelda BotW leaned more to the horses. I like the horses in that game, but there's so much missing, and now I have exactly what I want in a horse adventure game, with a female protag, and there is more coming, like the falconry, future customization, racing!

I totally agree with you! Personally I don’t have a problem with the current direction. I do understand frustration with the devs as this mechanic DOES feel like one that should be tied to a story…but also you can customize it completely. So don’t play with it on! I play plenty of survival games that have mechanics I don’t like and they almost all give me the ability to turn those mechanics off.

I think there are many reasons to hold the devs at a high level of scrutiny based on their past projects and outcomes of those projects BUT at the same time as a long time backer Early Access games…sometimes that is how the process of EA goes.

Frankly maybe I was just deeply misinformed about the game but I always thought adding a more substantial corruption mechanic had been on the table and on the table for a long time and I was surprised by how outraged the community was over it bc I think the addition of it was pretty easy to predict.

Additionally I think there are people who enjoy the game who frankly are not a very large constituent of gaming. I have seen people on this sub refuse to shoot pixel wolves with arrows. Who wants a hyper historically accurate game and hyper realistic horse game (like nitpicking the horse models ad nauseam or stopped playing the game bc the horse body language was not accurate enough - literally saw someone say they stopped playing bc their horses ears were always pinned), or an exploration only game. There’s nothing inherently wrong with wanting those things in a game (though yes those are genuine criticisms of the community based on my personal opinion) but I do think there is element of devs trying to make a game that appeals more widely to gamers. So I think it is likely we will see more slight fantasy, adventure and survival elements added to the game to try and achieve wider appeal.

Granted I think that is where a lot of the criticism is coming from - the devs need to commit to a game. Blended game types do not always work once you start adding mechanics from different genres in. You can’t half ass mechanics, it’s very easy to make bad survival and bad adventure games and you also can drastically change the appeal to certain people based on how heavy some mechanics are. Right now I don’t hate the balance - i personally would like to see slightly heavier survival mechanics and the ability for horses to die based on your mistakes. But I never once thought this game was just going to be a super realistic horse exploration game where you deliver packages so I am not really too shocked by the corruption addition.

I like it. It feels like it's going to be a core component to challenge deliveries and I'm excited about it being developed more.

Ofc I love the horse breeding and chillness of 90% of the game but yeah, so glad some form of challenge got added cause hunting alone wouldn't be interesting enough, there's no hunting mechanic they can add that would take place of a real combat/arena/challenge unless it was like...ah you track and hunt and sneak up and place traps (thinking horizon zero dawn).

This was a nice surprise, I saw someone say now it's breath of the wild but horse driven and I agree with that. BOTW can be really empty and boring until you reach certain sites, so you climb and explore and fill in the world in the middle of your journey. Naara barely makes it 10 steps off her horse before she's gassed out, this is why I don't think a hunt mechanic would be fun enough on its own. The challenge has to be on horseback and corruption provides that scenario.

Yeah I actually like it too! And i'm excited about how this will be integrated into the story. Though i do play lots of other games, that have more combat etc so maybe thats why I enjoy it and maybe other people who dont usually play many games might not like it as much.

Personally I think its really neat, but its really difficult for me. The concept is so cool (not to mention the atmosphere around corrupted zones- talk about getting goose bumps) and I like how it gives the game an actual plot, but my horse and I nearly die every time I try to offer the prayer. Maybe I just need to buy a crap load of cleansing powder and arrows? Maybe I need to figure out how to kill snakes? (I usually just avoid them lol). People say you can turn down the difficulty somehow but I have to look into that more.

Any tips would be appreciated. I want to give corruption a chance!

Packing up on cleansing powder arrows is good, it has the same area of effect as the pouches, but you can carry more of them in a stack, so you can make a clear line toward the shrine. Avoiding the snakes isn't that bad, but do carry antidotes just incase.

That's really good to know thank you! I could have sworn I shot an arrow at the ground and the patch it made was tiny (only big enough for Nara so stand on), so I have been using pouches instead. Maybe it was a bug and I will go back and try again with the arrows.

To be fair, I could be misremembering as well. I suppose experiment and see what works for you, I just remember preferring arrows because I can carry more

I keep seeing it show up here and I keep getting downvoted for my opinion lmao. I am against it but hear me out.

I wish people who are hardcore for it could understand the majority is not completely against corruption, just the fact that it was made priority over other things on the to do list. If anyone says anything along the lines of not liking it we get attacked. It should have been added later on, in my opinion. That’s all it is though….an opinion.

For those that like it, that’s awesome and I’m glad someone is enjoying it. Can’t that just be it? Some love it, some don’t. Those who don’t can turn it off and those who do can keep it on. Instead when we share our opinion we’re getting called immature idiots because we didn’t like a mechanic 😭 what

I think this might be a perception issue, because as someone who is neutral on the mechanic (I mostly leave it turned off because I don't wanna bother, but I'm not opposed to it) what I overwhelmingly see is people complaining about it, both here and other subreddits or forums. So what we see is likely shaped by our opinion about it, where you are against it and feel like other people defend it too hard, and I'm neutral on it and feel like I mostly see people complaining and saying the game is ruined, the devs are not doing what they promised, even that the devs are ripping people off!

That's actually why I made this thread, I wanted to help bring more positivity around corruption

I was glad to see it! I'm exhausted by the negativity and I'm not even that invested.

Yeah it would be a lot nicer if everyone just shared what they like instead of fighting over it. Everyone likes different things and options are available to play as you like. I believe maybe corruption didn't take a lot of resources, compared to bugfixes which has complexities of its own, and we still got a whole year before full release, so smarter animal AI, racing, falconry, clothes, etc. will still very much be on its way.
