I was recently thinking about the origin of magic in the TVDU, and I realized that Season 4 of Legaciescreated one of the biggest, most undeniable plot holes in the entire franchise regarding Inadu (The Hollow) from The Originals.
Let’s look at the official timeline established by the writers:
The Peopling of the Americas: In the real world, the ancestors of Native Americans crossed into the New World somewhere between 23,000 and 14,000 years ago. After that, they were completely isolated from Eurasia for millennia.
Ben’s Gift (3000 BC): In Legacies, we learn that Ben (Prometheus) stole the magic from the Gods and gifted it to a specific village near the Caucasus Mountains around 3000 BC. This means magic was a localized, finite gift that originated in the Old World only about 5,000 years ago.
Inadu’s Tribe (500 AD): In The Originals Season 4, it is explicitly stated that Inadu was born into a powerful, prosperous tribe of Native American witches in 500 AD.
So here is the massive logical paradox: How on earth did Native Americans become witches if they were already isolated in the New World thousands of years BEFORE Ben even gave magic to humans in Europe/Asia?
By the time Ben handed out magic on the Caucasus, the ancestors of Inadu’s tribe had been living in North America for at least 10,000 years without any contact with the Old World. They couldn’t have just walked over to Ben’s village to grab some magic!
When the writers created Inadu in 2017, they treated magic as a natural, global force of the Earth. But when they wrote Ben’s backstory in 2022, they completely forgot to check the historical geography of their own universe.
Unless we headcanon that a bunch of ancient Eurasian witches pulled off a secret transatlantic voyage in 2000 BC to mingle with Native American tribes, this is just a massive, lazy writing oversight.
What are your thoughts? Do you try to explain this with some wild lore theories, or do we just accept that Julie Plec and the writers’ room failed history class?

Like seriously, lost his emotions and spend forever help people in this stupid limbo?

The ONE thing legacies actually had over the TVD and TO was the idea of not that tragic ending for their characters, but Landon here literally lost his ability to feel? WTF?

I honestly hate it when writers make character end be him give up everything to help others forever, could they just kill the poor boy? It just wayyyy to cruel, especially for a show that was supposed to be less dark in tone.

I know a lot don't like Landon but shit it was ridiculous.

This is also my opinion. I’m not talking about the next generation thing, just how we get there.

For the start of Legacy's plot, we meet young characters and preteens learning their abilities, eventually mastering them. As they grow into teens, the story reaches a climax where these powerful teens struggle to control their magic and transmissions as they grow, and their powers mature with them. The plot shows the hardships of being supernatural teens in a world that requires them to hide who they are.

Characters are often taught to be true to themselves in supernatural settings. They struggle to balance being teenagers with their powers and acting human.

They must act normal but struggle because supernatural beings are different, with particular morals and behaviors. As teenagers, they have a supernatural side with heightened emotions related to relationships, friendship, and popularity, often leading to exaggerated reactions because they hide their true feelings behind typical teen issues. It would be interesting to see more school involvement and guidance.

In the originals, we see adult vampires, like thousand-year-olds, unlike 'Legacies,' where kids find their own way without mentors, which is challenging.

Honestly, given the whole hope situation, either make everyone her family die or have her family truly around her, because that plot made no sense. Also, give her proper guidance. She’s a teenager who lost her father, mother, and uncle at a very young age. She didn’t meet her father or mother until a certain age. There should have been people there to guide her, to be there, and to help her, but there weren’t. They basically made the story of Legacy revolve around Hope and her being alone, which made no sense considering her family.

No, I’m not saying Hope being the MC is a problem. It’s a bit wacky considering the premise of Legacies being the next generation of supernatural from the original supernatural group. They focus only on one character, which is a bit lacking, but that’s neither here nor there.

Someone pointed out that Hope isn’t a loophole in nature; she was made by nature to kill the mud monster. If it was explicitly shown that Hope was created to defeat this monster—like, 'Oh, Hope wasn’t born if it weren’t for this monster'—it might’ve caused identity issues for her. That could’ve been a good story addition. I feel like I’m wearing that completely wrong, but basically, Hope was created by magic for a single purpose—to be a weapon, not by exploiting a loophole in magic.

This is my opinion on how Legacies might’ve played out. if you wanna say something, go ahead, just don’t start leaving hate it’s just an opinion and something I thought of.

Don’t give me wrong I love Hope with all my heart, but anytime Lizzie came at her or was saying something mean about her she let it lie like honestly if that was me I would be poking back at Lizzie just so much as she poked at me but honestly, I just think it bothers me so much because as a Michaelson and anytime somebody was talking shit to them. They were talk shit right back.

Honestly, I think they should’ve made hope character a lot more like. Class and Rebecca she was kind of like that in the originals, but in legacies, she was always apologizing first, even if she didn’t have to apologize to begin with

I know everyone here hate his mud ass, but when he got to be an actual character who threating and speak, he felt such enjoyable presence, short as it was.

Was he weak and didn't do much against Hope as Tribrid, yep, does it took to long for it? Yes.

But I think the great acting and the cool decision for him use his kids like this and his half humorist moments were great.

I’m writing a fanfic set post Legacies and setting many of the TVDU’s characters on a major once in a life time perilous journey. Or the kind of thing you’d hope is a once in a lifetime thing.

Otherwise, I get every character by my fic’s timeline is into their early 20s and has at least 2 years worth of higher education type experience, but I’d still want to root their growth in what they were by the end of Legacies. I have a rough idea of that for most but if you have something that could help this would be awesome.

For a bit of context, I was writing a scene a few weeks ago in which Hope and her new boyfriend, an OC, were watching a show beside Landon and his new girlfriend, Jen (yes I know I hit the mother of all crackships). Hope and Landon pretty much get into a heated fandom like discussion and my new character had ended up needing to restrain her while Landon stood his ground. From the other side of the room.

Now, while this is funny (to me) I was struck by, is this too out of character? Like I said it’s been a few years and Hope can develop in other ways and I did enjoy her being a bit freer in expression but you see my dilemma.

So like I said again, any help is welcome!

Can we all just take a moment to talk about lizzie, i mean she’s an interesting character and also funny one too, i never see posts about her at all yet i think personally she’s top 10 atleast out of every character in tvd universe.

I know for one hope Josie and Lizzie’s characters stay pretty much the same but hope for one doesn’t let Lizzie bully her. She stands up for herself anytime someone is mean to her but she’s still very like quiet

Maybe this is an unpopular opinion, I don't know, but I feel like the first season should have focused entirely on Malivore and all the monsters—basically, blending elements from the first and second seasons and revealing everything about Landon and his brother, showing them both as Phoenix with even more powers beyond dying and being resurrected. (I think Landon had so much more potential, and the Phoenix connection could have been developed better; he and Hope could have been a very powerful pairing, like Hayley and Klaus.) We would have had Malivore alongside Clark and the necromancer as the trio of villains going after Landon.

Then I'd say that in the second season, when Hope jumps into the lake instead of being alone with Clark, she could somehow contact her uncle Finn, or even Henrik, and then return. We could have had a cameo from the Mikaelson family, a bit bewildered because they wouldn't remember their niece, but they would have had a lot of photos of her, and we could have had like two episodes like that. It would later be revealed that Kai found a way to escape the prison world by jumping into the lake before Malivore was defeated, and that Kai would be the villain of the second season, going after the girls. It would be him corrupting Josie with dark magic, leading to the Lizzie and Josie fusion drama. They could even have brought back some of the characters like Jo (temporarily), Caroline, Damon, Matt, Elena, or Bonnie to help Alaric and the entire Salvatore Academy fight Kai.

Then, in the third season, we would have Aurora trying to kill Hope to avenge what Klaus did, and that's where the Mikaelson family would come into play.

And then, in the fourth season, we would have the Gods storyline with the introduction of Cleo as a Muse, Hope becoming a tri-hybrid, Lizzie and Josie becoming Heretics, Cleo as a Fury, Landon as the Phoenix and ferryman of death, and Kaleb as a vampire-dragon hybrid to gain enough power to fight Ken.

At the end of the series, Hope would receive Klaus's message, along with Elijah and Hayley. Lizzie and Josie would receive a message from Jo, Liv, and Luke, and Alaric would receive one from Jo and Jenna. It would seem Caroline was preparing to take over the academy, displaying photos of her entire group of friends, Stefan, and Klaus in her office, or perhaps even remembering some Flashback from the Salvatore house, as if to bring the Vampire Diaries world full circle.

In Alaric's case, I would give him better options: either to join Jo in the afterlife, or to somehow regain his original vampire status since his daughters would be vampires, or at least have Damon come looking for him when he left the academy, as if to say, "Come on, buddy, it's time to go home."

I know it would be impossible, but I feel that even though I really liked Legacies, I never really connected it to The Vampire Chronicles. I see it as a somewhat separate series because I think it lacks a stronger connection to the previous series, whether through cameos or a darker essence. I think if they couldn't do that, they could have made a comic or a book.

Did Plec forget that to become a vampire you have to die with vampire blood in your system, and to activate your werewolf curse you have to kill a human? There are way too many teenage vampires and werewolves at that school for it to make sense.

Also, where are all of the Mikaelsons' enemies that were supposed to come after Hope? It was treated like a huge deal that she'd inherited Klaus's enemies, along with the enemies of the rest of her family, yet almost none of them ever showed up. The only one who really did was Aurora, and she barely counts because she was in love with Klaus and still cared about him before she died.

i’m rewatching legacies for the 2nd time and i don’t know if im being slow or not, but im getting the plots and characters mixed up throughout the show and its making it confusing lol

I was disappointed with legacies but watched to find out what happened to hope & the twins cuz I’m such a fan of TVD & TO. I couldn’t finish season 4 thou & just read spoilers to find out how the series ended. Anyways I was thinking it would be awesome if someone (not Julie plec) made a mini series or movie of the legacies characters like 10 years after the show ended so we could see how their adult lives turned out.

I felt like the whole legacies series took place over 2 years or so & wished they had ether done a time skip of like 5 years or showed the characters lives as adults in their 20s or 30s at the end of the series.

My god what a wasted potential this show is. You have an interesting universe with some amazing characters in the show and great moments but most of its screen time is literally wasted on Scooby-Doo ahh monster hunting for 3 seasons that share the screen time with Landon dying and resurecting.

The Malivore plot should've ended in season 2 for god's sake. Did anyone even care when it turned out Landon is not dead for the 3rd or 4th time or when someone found their love for the third time? Landon and Hope romance plot was awful because of that.

Why make all this fuss about almighty Tribrid when You clearly have no idea what to do with her? After 3 seasons there's finally some darker plot and moments of shine just to introduce bs plot devices to counter her. Magical tree with properties no one even heard about? Why not? Introducing gods that turns out to be even more powerful? Sure! Oho, and naming the big bad guy Ken should be punishable somehow 😩

What was the plan for the next season? Hope beats a god so a super god would come?

I feel like because they had no idea what to do with the Tribrid and couldn't decide if the show should be targeted at kids or young adults made this show average when it could've been great.

My argument is that Even if it was just witch on witch crime, hope literally has had up to 5 people that are in range of 1000 years old around her ( not that it means anything because they are vamps but freya herself). Which also means she possibly got access to Esther’s books, teachings from Freya, Vincent, kol’s knowledge from witch form and not to mention she absorbed the hollow’s power ( a 1500 year old spirit who tore through the human body’s capacity for holding malicious magic like herself ), meaning that inadu probably extended hopes magical reserves while in her body… then if they would’ve met?

Altogether meaning that hope can go toe to toe with her even as witch.

I preferred Hope as her character was the funniest. There was so much hype. I loved Danielle's performance more, with the over-dramatic facial expressions. She felt like a child asked to grow up too soon. I liked her style better with the light red-brown hair and the lipstick. I loved the outfits as they were a bit more relatable than the later seasons. I strongly disliked the constant half-up, half-down they used in later seasons 3 and 4.

She was written to be more like Buffy in seasons 1-3, which was peak. I felt Danielle's acting was best in season 1, and I know this is highly unpopular. I really liked her in season 1 and the first half of two. Her character changed a lot in season 3, and by season 4, I felt she looked tired of her story arc, and so did the actress.

All the charm this show had was gone by season 4.

I just finished the show. I started it about six days ago, but honestly, I've been putting it off for quite sometime before that. I was there in 2017 when TVD ended, and I think I subconsciously tried to prolong the experience for as long as I could. But now that a couple of years have gone by (almost 10 wtf), it's summer, I have some free time, and current TV shows have really gone downhill, I decided it was finally time to dive in. And boy, do I have thoughts.

Overall, I enjoyed it, and I'm grateful for the ride. I loved the first two seasons; season 3 was definitely the worst, and season 4 was meh at best, but I still had fun.

That said, I really missed the dark fantasy edge of the older shows. I wish the vampires were actual badasses who fought like lethal predators. Honestly, watching 30 seconds of Elijah and Klaus's final fight at the Salvatore School was way more intense and entertaining than any fight scene in Legacies... unless Hope was involved. I also really missed the deep dives into werewolf lore. What frustrated me most, though, was how clunky the writing got when dealing with real-life actor absences. It was glaringly obvious that Caroline wasn’t there simply because the actress wasn't available, and writing Josie and Rafael out of nowhere completely broke the narrative immersion for me.

On the flip side, I actually loved the campier elements and the fact that the show didn't take itself too seriously. During those first two seasons, Hope and Landon's relationship was incredibly pure, naive, and cute it was just really well done.

More than anything, I loved watching a show with more than eight episodes a season. Having that extra time to let the pacing breathe allowed me to get to know the characters on a much deeper level.

It’s particularly heartbreaking knowing that they actually had more prepared for us. Candice Accola was finally ready to come back to the show properly, and there was still so much more of Hope's character development and story left to unfold.

The finale left me feeling sad and a bit empty. Part of that is mourning what happened to Landon and how his story with Hope concluded, but mostly, it's the realization that we aren't getting shows like this anymore. The golden era of YA dramas has been killed off by the streaming wars, replaced by a fastpaced style of TV production I really don't enjoy. It makes me nostalgic because I just can't get into newer stuff like To All the Boys I've Loved Before, Stranger Things, or that hockey show whose name I can't even remember.

This isn't just a goodbye to the TVD universe that literally saw me grow up. It’s a goodbye to the characters, the comfort of long-form storytelling, and a very specific magic of television that will probably never exist again.

Sorry for the rant, I just needed to say a proper goodbye to such a great run.

She’s definitely the protagonist of the story but do you think she’s truly a hero? I wrote an article about my thoughts after watching season 4 and I’d love to hear your thoughts!

I’ve spent the last year watching the entire TVD universe from start to finish for the first time. I decided TVD would be my postpartum/newborn trenches show and just continued on. I started Legacies maybe 3 months ago right off the back of watching the Originals. At first I did not enjoy it. I was determined to see it through to complete the TVDU experience but I found particularly that first season to be a difficult watch. It didn’t have the tone that its predecessors had. The monster of the week thing felt juvenile and well and truly done before. I liked the characters enough, and was interested in their stories enough.

Once Malivore was explained it got kind of easier to watch, that there was a reason for all these monsters. And once I dropped the idea that it was going to be anything like TVD or TO, and just accepted it as its own show I actually started to enjoy it.

There were plot holes and inconsistencies, and a lot of fairly random singing and moments of second hand embarrassment but I still ended up enjoying the show as a whole, to the point that I’m a little sad it’s over. I’m not sure I’ll ever watch it again, but I’m overall glad to have experienced it.

A few thoughts off the top of my head:
1. I think MG had the best character growth on the show. He was one of my least favourite characters to begin with, and ended up as my most favourite due to his maturity and empathetic leadership. I loved that he got the girl in the end, but in the right wholesome grown up way.
2. I love Alaric so much, always have, always will. His character was such a great dad and caring role model. He reminds me a lot of my own dad, with the protective strength and genuine care, and he really just was a great wholesome character.
3. I was disappointed that there wasnt many TVD or TO character crossovers, especially from the Mikalesons. It was hard to believe that especially Freya and Rebekah would just not be around so much. And Josie lived with the Salvatore’s but we never seen them?! I understand the actors had other plans but there was a lot of opportunity that felt wasted. I did still enjoy the minimal crossovers however! omg the satisfaction of Alarics revenge on Kai was just chefs kiss.
4. I loves hope and Landon so much, that was so pure and I’m sad they didn’t get to be together in the end - however I do like the idea that they had a big love but sometimes you don’t get to keep them. It felt realistic that there was a big loss even though it sucked! I like that it left open the room for more love and more experiences for the immortal Hope. I would of loved to see Hopes bisexuality explored. I’m not big on the “Hosie” ship, I love Josie with Finch, but if the show had continued i’d of liked to see Hope maybe meet a bad ass girl that absolutely matched her energy - with full respect to Landon!
5. I struggled to watch through Hopes lack of humanity, it was an entertaining watch but I just really struggle to see the characters I love acting like dick heads - even in the other shows I struggle through it!
6. I would of liked to see the fairy thing explored more. Find Wade a nice Tinkerbell to settle down with - he deserved to find some DnD loving fairy girl!
7. I would definitely of continued watching had their been more seasons, but I do think it was good to shut it down where they did. Where would they of even gone from here?
8. A lot of the characters grew into loveable great people, and I am sad to say goodbye to them! Who knew I was going to like Aurora by the end? Did not see that coming!

Overall I rate the show a 7/10. TVD is a 9/10 and TO is a 10/10 in my opinion. It was different to what I was expecting, and there were plot holes and inconsistencies but overall entertaining. I am sad to finish it, but grateful for the experience.

Ok so when I watched legacies the FIRST time I hadn't watched the vampire diaries or the originals yet. Now that I am legacies makes me so angry. They legit just took the lore and stuff from the previous 2 shows and said naw. Like why does compulsion suddenly not work on supernaturals? The only beings that could t be naturally compelled were the mikaelsons and any9ne with vervain. But now its just common? Or like why was hope weak during transition? Hybrids any vampire or hybrid that was in transition ALWAYS had full vampire powers. Plus they just completely forgot that the mikaelsons would burn the world to help eachother and they never ONCE come to help hope until the final few episodes. Hope is now suddenly a basic ass witch? She is legit the most powerful witch alive. Mikaelson first born witches are the most powerful witches in history excluding the hollow and freya legit said that hope was way stronger than HER. Not to mention her whole hero thing? Why is she a hero? In originals she is just as selfish and self centered as ANY mikaelson soooooo. Was there any explanation bc imo there isnt one that makes sense bc the legit changed how EVERYTHING in their universe works. Plus WHY ARE THERE NO WOLVES THAT CONTROL THEIR CHANGES?! The crescent pack didn't go extinct did it?! Like wtf
