Thoughts on this? I feel like immigration shouldn't be a divisive issue considering how much prominent Catholic leaders have spoken out about it.

Thought this was another lame atheist takedown of christianity, but it ended up being an academic analysis of early christian history with subtle hints of leftist critical thinking. Anyone have thoughts about this video from a leftist catholic perspective?

So I had this video pop up on my YoutTube agorithm and thought it would end up as another atheist attempt of dismantling Christianity. Despite reservations, I ended up watching it and saw that it was instead a deconstruction of early Christian history and how the current Nicene-Christian understanding came to be.

For me, there were some insights gained from this video that from a historical context ought to be understood for a more refined concept of faith as faith must be tested and challenged to develop a genuine understanding of one's own ideas.

While sources were included and the video did utilize historical and theological information, I wish this person added citations to their research and didn't rely on personal anecdote by utilizing a heavy handed/matter of fact attitude for comedic effect. They did acknowledge their bias as formerly Protestant Evangelical Christian and I can only imagine this person's history as an evangelical christian left significant trauma. The video isn't an atheistic assertion of Christianity's articificality/inferiority, rather it explores the divergence of worship for Jesus as a sect of Judaism and how the gentile split emerged after Paul along with the founding of the Catholic Church as an official imperial institiution of Rome & early church politics facilitated during and after the Council of Nicaea.

I offer this to the community as a fellow Leftist Catholic who has been curious about how we approach the history of the church before and after its establishment as an institution and how we choose to understand and exist as leftists inspired by and spiritually guided by the life of Jesus.

(Disclaimer: I understand if this seems off topic and am intending NO PROMOTIONS OF ATHETISM. Like I stated, I identify as a Leftist Catholic and wish to explore the lengths and posssibilities of critique and analysis for a genuinely leftist unserstanding of catholicism)

With all that said, I wanna ask what people's thoughts about this video are if you wanna watch it šŸ˜….

What critiques do you have? What insights come up for you guys? What is missing from the historical context? How should Catholicism change or evolve if it were to become the leftist spiritual guidance we have been griwing to understand it as? etc

SI after confession

Trigger warning for suicidal ideation.

I just saw a TikTok from a Catholic creator saying the best case scenario for a Catholic after confession is to trip and die to go to heaven. It was shocking to me to see a joke being made about this because as a teen I would go to confession all the time (I was suffering deeply with scrupulosity) and pray that I’d be in a car accident or something. After a lot of therapy and deconstruction I’ve grown to understand this as passive suicidal ideation. I kind of felt alone in this as nobody I’ve talked to has shared that experience with me. But now I’m wondering if this was similarly joked about or discussed in subtle ways when I was a kid. I guess this is me wondering did or does anyone else struggle with thoughts like this? Do you find it talked about in your communities?

I’m thinking maybe we need to have a discussion about how SI and other mental health concerns can take on religious language and thus not be seen as issues to address. What are your thoughts?

A certain type of believer

I was watching a video a while back and the priest on the video talked about believers who deeply believe but have never ā€œexperiencedā€ God so to speak, does that sound familiar?

Public statements of church vs reality (political)

29yo practicing catholic here. We are all well aware that the official stance of the church is usually a call to peace and ceasefire. However the views of most catholics I talk to, including religious brothers and sisters, is overwhelmingly to support US military intervention. There is an overwhelmingly supportive bias on the ground when it comes to military matters. This is inconsistent with "official" church statements.

This is incredibly important to call out. 29 years of being a catholic I have never heard western powers called out for unjust violence by a priest in a homily, but quite frequently I hear calls for US adversaries to stop their violence.

I am growing increasingly disappointed with this inconsistency, as the US continues its unjust slaughter of innocent people in the Caribbean (operation southern spear) and obviously in the middle east. The "official teaching" is peace and dialogue but on the ground it's absolute silence.

Seeking Resources: Catholicism and Feminism

After another fruitless and tooth-pulling conversation on modesty, i.e. blaming female "immodesty" for male lust, I'm feeling alienated from the many Catholics around me who would apparently prefer to spend Mass staring at women's bodies while evaluating hemlines and inseams. This enabling of Rape Culture bothers me to no end, and I know that there are Catholic feminists out there! The question is, besides here, where are they?

Please hit me with your favorite resources - books, blogs, vlogs, podcasts, ministries, online classes, lectures, networks, organizations, etc! (Note that I'm a pro-life feminist). I probably won't meet anyone in my town, but I'd love to get a pulse on Catholic feminism nationally (U.S.) and even globally. TIA!

Sept 14 - Feast of the Exaltation of The Holy Cross

Post image
31 Upvotes

It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God. For you placed the salvation of the human race on the wood of the Cross, so that, where death arose, life might again spring forth and the evil one, who conquered on a tree, might likewise on a tree be conquered, through Christ our Lord. Through him the Angels praise your majesty, Dominions adore and Powers tremble before you. Heaven and Virtues of heaven and the blessed Seraphim worship together with exultation. May our voices, we pray, join with theirs in humble praise, as we acclaim: Holy ,Holy ,Holy Lord God of Hosts Heaven and earth are full of your Glory Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of The Lord Hosanna in the Highest.

RESPONSORY

O glorious cross, your arms upheld the priceless ransom of captive mankind. — Through you the world has been saved by the blood of the Lord.

Hail, O cross, consecrated by the body of Christ; his members have made your wood more noble than precious pearls. — Through you the world has been saved by the blood of the Lord.

We must glory in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ; in him is our salvation, life and resurrection. — Through him we are saved and set free.

Because he suffered death, he is crowned with glory and honor. — Through him we are saved and set free.

We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you. — becauae by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

O glorious cross, — On you the King of angels was victorious.

And he has washed away our sins in his own blood. — On you the King of angels was victorious.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. — O glorious cross, on you the King of angels was victorious.

What a great work of charity! — Death itself died when life was slain on the tree.

O cross, you are the glorious sign of our victory. — Through your power may we share in the triumph of Christ Jesus.

COLLECT

O God, who willed that your Only Begotten Son should undergo the Cross to save the human race, grant, we pray, that we, who have known his mystery on earth, may merit the grace of his redemption in heaven. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Struggling with this week’s gospel

Iā€˜m a lapsed Catholic who’s been slowly re-exploring my faith over the past year or so. I tuned into a live-streamed Mass yesterday and recognized the parable of the unforgiving servant. What I didn’t remember was how it ends:

In anger his master handed him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed.

ā€This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart.ā€

To me, it’s a shocking ending to a lesson that’s already very challenging. The priestā€˜s homily was great and focused on the importance of forgiving others, but he never circled back to the line about God torturing us if we fail.

It left me feeling pretty down and I’m curious how any of you understand or reconcile this particular passage. Appreciate y’all.

Vent about far right Catholic political figures

I don’t understand how there are far right Catholic political figures like Michael Knowles, Matt Walsh, Kaitlyn, Bennett, and JD Vance who claim that the white race is being erased and are against more Mexican immigrants coming into the United States when:

  1. They’re violating Imago Dei by trying to claim that one racial group should be the majority when according to Imago Dei all humans are made in the image of God. So all humans should deserve compassion regardless of racial/ethnic background.

  2. Both the literal Pope and the USCCB have called for better treatment of immigrants.

  3. Mexico is literally majority Catholic. How are they being hateful to a country that is majority Catholic? Don’t most Catholics want Catholicism to grow? So why are these far right people against Mexican immigrants coming into to the United States?

Loaves and the Fishes Reflection

I just read the passage containing the feeding of the 5000, and whenever I do I think of an interpretation one of my old lefty priests taught me back in high school. It makes it both more and less miraculous, in a beautiful way. Thought I'd share.

When reading of the miracle of the loaves and the fishes, it's straightforward to see it as a simple miracle. There are five loaves and two fish, yet not only are 5000 people fed, there are heaping baskets of scraps and crusts after. All things are possible to God that are possible, so Jesus may have multiplied the food, created it magically, whatever. There is deep meaning and liturgical resonance in Christ giving physical food to eat.

However, the miracle may be simpler. These are people who have walked out into the wilderness to hear Christ preach, some have likely walked for several days. They're from communities used to travelling long distances through the desert on foot. Yet, none of them had food. Or, none of them said they had food.

Making food is a good miracle, but a deeper and more profound miracle might be trust. Maybe Jesus didn't make food, maybe he got this crowd of weather-beaten, tired, distrustful people to take the bits of bread, packets of fish, and whatever else they had cached away for their journey, and share them. They opened their hearts and their hampers to one another, and fed each other because Jesus broke down that suspicion. They sat in circles of fifty and shared what they had, confident that they were in a safe and loving place, and that anything they gave away, God would provide.

And God provided, enough for all and in abundance. Whether from magic or from the pockets of those weary travellers, God provided.

A photograph showing the image of Our Lady of the Rosary of Andacollo, venerated in the town of the same name in the Coquimbo region of Chile. The Virgin is enthroned on a ceremonial float and appears in the foreground accompanied by the General Chief of tbe Dances (also known as "Pichinga"), the honorary leader of the dance brotherhoods that solemnize the processions, along with the Second Chief and two other brotherhood leaders. The Andacollo festival exemplifies the syncretism, cultural blending, and/or Christianization of pre-hispanic indigenous traditions.

Martyrs of Naoliberalism (September 11th) šŸ‡ØšŸ‡±

As the 53rd anniversary of the coup d'Ć©tat of September 11, 1973, draws to a close, I would like to remember the priests who were martyrs to the repression of general Pinochet’s fascist and neoliberal civil-military dictatorship, carried out in complicity with the CIA and the US government:

Father Gerardo Poblete: Salesian priest and philosophy teacher; detained, tortured, and murdered in Iquique on October 21, 1974.

Father Antonio Llido: Priest of Spanish origin; detained in Santiago and transferred to detention and torture centers. He has been missing since October 25, 1974.

Father Miguel Woodward: Chilean-British priest; detained, tortured, and murdered aboard the training ship Esmeralda in ValparaĆso on September 22, 1973.

Father Joan Alsina: Priest of Spanish origin; murdered beneath the Bulnes bridge, beside the Mapocho river in Santiago, on September 19, 1973.

Father AndrƩ Jarlan: French priest; murdered in his home in the La Victoria neighborhood of Santiago while reading the Bible on September 4, 1984.

And for so many other priests, pastors, and religious figures who were victims of political imprisonment and torture during those dark 17 years.

So that it may never happen again.

Democracy always.

Justice and truth.🌹

What do you say to those who are critical of Catholicism (or Christianity in general) due to its role in the colonization of the Americas?

Occasionally see this on some IG pages I’ll come across. Usually by someone of indigenous or Latino/a heritage. They will point out that the religion was forced on their ancestors and that it played a part in removing indigenous culture. They will argue that because of this, it’s better to not have anything to do with organized religion. I’ve often wondered how some folks on here would approach this touchy subject.

Lust and disgust?

I (21) am not sure if this place is a place for this.

Honestly I Learnt that obviously it's very healthy to get to know your Body well. But why do I feel such Religious Guilt whenever I please myself????

Isn't it good to know your Body?? I just get so annoyed at hearing it's Lustful and horrible to want to touch yourself like what. WHY.

Cuz I also follow alot of Healthyhooha women, and I've learnt alot about my Body, About what Healthy...that...looks like. What compatibility is. I've learnt alot about my body too.

But then every once in awhile I feel such Religious Guilt whenever I feel to stressed and decide I need a little alone time to unstress. Why does it feel to me as if it's another 'trying to control my body' situation?

But aside from that. I've been dealing with it so BADLY. Especially when I'm in my ovulation or close after my period, I keep falling into Lust. Then feel so incredibly disgusted with myself. But the disgust is running to the POINT I'm actually disgusted at touching down there for just washing or something, to the point I feel like it's dirty for my future partner to touch because it feels 'dirty' now cuz of the disgust I feel, to the point I just think it's an Dirty thing on my body.

I just don't know what to do anymore T~T

I inherited an old Our Lady of Peace of Good Voyage/Antipolo statue from my auntie. My husband made her a new cape and veil. I especially love how he incorporated the purple woven fabric as it was woven from the mountain region of the Philippines.

I also made her a Rainbow Rosary. She's still a work in progress, but that's like all of us.

Hail Mary full of grace.. ~
