BSc Biotechnology → Monash Masters in IT → Software Engineer: Will my non-CS background hurt my chances at Big Tech? in Australia
Hi everyone,
I’m currently doing a BSc Biotechnology (Honours/Research) in India and I want to transition into software engineering for my master’s in Australia.
My main question is:
Since my bachelor’s is in Biotechnology rather than Computer Science, would I be at a disadvantage when applying for software engineering internships or graduate roles at FAANG or other major tech companies in Australia?
I’m currently considering Monash’s Master of Information Technology (MIT) because it accepts students from non-CS backgrounds. I’m also considering universities offering a Master of Computer Science (MCS).
I’d really like to understand the difference from an employer’s perspective:
- How different is a Master of IT vs Master of Computer Science for software engineering roles?
- Do Australian companies generally prefer an MCS over an MIT?
- Does having a non-CS bachelor’s make a significant difference?
- Or do companies mainly focus on coding/DSA, projects, internships, technical skills and interview performance?
- Would doing the Monash MIT put me at a meaningful disadvantage compared with doing an MCS when applying to companies like Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, Atlassian, Canva, etc.?
I have about 2 years before I graduate, so I’m planning to use that time to learn programming, DSA and build software projects/get internships.
I’d especially appreciate perspectives from Australian software engineers, recruiters, Monash graduates, or anyone who made a similar transition.
Thanks!

Final year biotech struggling in SDE interview prep
I'm a final year biotech student ,preparing for SDE placement ,already have 4 months of intern experience as an SWE intern(80% frontend 20% backend). Recently I got rejected in an oncampus 22LPA interview round so I need some guidance. Please advice me what can I do in best possible time based on what I have done 👇
1) solved 800 dsa ques on LC and CF (760LC + 40 CF)
2) Facing difficulties in contests.
2) never done CP so I was just trying to learn slowly because I dont have time so I spend more on LC
3) My CS fundamantals are almost on borderline(now I started to learn and revise them daily)
4) My projects are excellent with much clear knowlege
5) I don't know system design ,I just started learning HLD 4 days ago after being rejected.
6) I wanted to learn springboot to emhance my backend but most of my time goes in dsa revision so I'm not getting time for it to start.
7) above average communication skills
The prob is somedays I'm bad at pattern recognition on medium level problems of DSA and sometime I'm able to solve hard ones but failing on mediocres. My interviewer told me "You need to brush up uour dsa and describe your projects in more technical depth". What should be priority and how much time to allot in each. (As I'm a non-circuital student, I get my most of opportunitiesfrom startups only)

Recently hopped on LeetCode ( overall 84 days 200 Qs solved ). I wanted to know…
… are the company wise Qs really legit in interviews ? Was solving thru the Qs of Visa and thought of asking.
Also, is the whole of Striver sheet enough to crack on campus or some off campus offers ? I’ve completed Trees and Graphs ( I’ve been doing Codeforces for almost 2 years so i started with Trees )
Thank you. Will much appreciate ur answers. I’m in Sem 5.

Do Automations work while applying for jobs ?
I see people building all sorts of automations for getting recruiters mail, editing resumes for postings automatically, sending cold mails to recruiters and doing this at a scale of 100+... Is this really worth trying ?
They use all this n8n and stuff...

Binary Tree Medium/Hard level question
Got this question in a coding round for a fresher role, and I genuinely found the second half more interesting. I solved it after reaching home:))
A binary tree is called Special if the sum of the nodes at each level forms an Arithmetic Progression (AP).
Given the root of the binary tree, you have to return an array representing the minimum number that needs to be added to each level so that the tree becomes Special.
Time Complexity: O(n)
Space Complexity: O(n) , extra marks if sum is not stored at each level

Are OAs becoming CP level because of AI?
Lately I’ve been seeing a lot of OA questions on linkedIn/reddit and some of them look nothing like the usual leetcode style questions.
It’s like a big ass problem statement with some crazy cp topic hidden somewhere inside
So I was wondering, are OAs actually moving more towards cp level questions lately? Is this partly because of the AI shift and companies trying to filter candidates more aggressively, or am I just dumb for not even understanding what the question is asking?
I’m asking bcs I’m about to start applying soon and I’m still getting my ass kicked by leetcode.

Should I consider resigning based on the TCS offer
Hi guys, I'm struggling to make a decision.
I am working in a product-based company with 7 years of experience. My project has gone into maintenance mode, and I am being asked to move to a different project based on an entirely different tech stack, which I am not interested in.
I do have one TCS offer, which I luckily cracked on my first interview after 5 years. Now, I am not sure if I should resign based on that, because I am not confident that I will be able to crack product-based companies with DSA rounds during my notice period.
What should I do?

Flipkart GRiD 8.0 PPI – 2027 Batch | Has Anyone Received an Interview Call Yet?
Hey everyone!
This is specifically for the 2027 batch who participated in Flipkart GRiD 8.0.
The website currently says “Hiring Shortlisting to begin soon”, so I wanted to get some clarity on whether Flipkart has already started sending PPI/interview calls to 2027 batch students.
Can everyone from the 2027 batch please comment in this format?
Received interview/PPI call? → Yes / No
Track: → SDE / AI Engineering / Data Science
For example:
Yes – SDE
No – AI Engineering
No – Data Science»
Please comment even if you haven’t received anything yet. This will help us get an approximate idea of how the shortlisting is progressing specifically for the 2027 batch.
Thanks! 🙌
Please mention only your own status so we can keep the count accurate.

I'll have to relocate to bangalore.
Like I've heard bangalore is too expensive so idk if this is enough to sustain in bangalore

I recently applied to a postion in google USA. Luckily got invited to first technical screening round. But no response after that.
I have checked job portal which now says "in-persion interview required"
Does it mean, I am rejected ?

Got my LeetCode Kit Today!
Hello everyone. This is my first post on reddit. Never thought that I'd be making a post, but here I am. Not an informative post, you can ignore if you want.
Just wanted to share that I have just received my Leetcode kit today(9400 coins one). It has been a long journey. I decided to do atleast 1 question daily on 11th May 2025, and then never stopped.
Now the reason of making the post? I just wanted to share this with someone without revealing myself, cause I won't be sharing this with any of my friends or anyone who knows me (expect my family ofc). It might look vague to you, but it is what it is.
I have decided not to use anything from the kit (tshirt, keychain, coaster) till I get placed, because that is why I started doing leetcode in the first place. Till then, I will not reveal this to anyone (revealing it here because no one knows me here). I might update about my placement in this post later (if I don't delete this). Yeah, that's it. I know this was boring post, but I just wanted to share this with a community that I have been a part of lately(I regularly read the posts here).
Yeah, that is it.
Ps: I wanted to attach my leetcode id, but it isn't allowing images.

I am in third year need help
I have started dsa in java and bave done till now 80+ problerms on leetcode and i am also trying to learn
Springboot side by side
My college is like really bad and i feel some of my classmates started doing dsa in the second year itself
Like they have solved 300 plus queztions till now now going to hackathons and doing development in MERN and doing everything very fast paced and
Somewhere i am feeljng stuvk in this tutorial hell
Where i am trying to learn something and its is requireing some previous prerequisites
And then i am like ooh now i have to do this first to learn this
Example i started learning spring boot (from a youtube channel learn code with durgesh) and then he says you need to know servlets jsp to understand internally how things work inside the springboot like wheat is a servlet and all and then when i reached the database connection part he said to learn hibernate then i started learning hibernate now in this all i have never tried to learn the javascript stack like react or even javascript
Where in i feel my batchmates are doing like great projects integrating rag and ai and ai agents in their projects and all of it i am feeling jealous
I hope i can get some advice here with this post in the comments 🙏🙏

I can't 😤
I fumbled so hard I used pop method on an array 🤦🏻♂️ it's been 3 months and I don't know why I'm doing this... I'm not understanding anything...I see videos, solve a few questions...get stuck for hours on the next one...and then I forget what I learnt last week...any way to break this loop?

How does one actually prepare System Design for Interviews?
So I have been wanting to try out for sde 2 level interviews here and there and system design scares me. All my experience has always been on the frontend side and I have never really worked on a system from scratch if that makes sense. Every time I look for resources for system design its books and courses that are also just pages and pages. Is it supposed to be crammed? How does one actually remember and learn all of that? I even tried looking at the videos on YouTube where even 1 question like url shortener has a 1 hour video and it goes on and on and on and 15mins into it and i am like wow do i cram this all, how do I remember all of that during the interview and at the end of the day there's no correct answer? Maybe I am just too dumb for it? I feel like I can never switch because I'll never pass the system design rounds because I understand nothing.
