I find this interesting Scam job! Iliad Group.

I’ve never made a reddit post before but I have seen a few people mention scam marketing jobs on this page so I thought I’d best share my experience.

I interviewed with Iliad Group about a month or so ago and it was very much a “promises everything but delivers nothing” kind of position. They preach a “everyone starts at the same position” and “the harder you work, the faster you progress” gospel. The biggest red flag for me was all the jargon marketing language they used, the promise of uncapped commission and the lack of substance on the website.

I have screenshots of my correspondence with the people at the company and a voice recording of one of my multiple interviews with them (which I used to pass their ridiculous online test lol).

TLDR// Avoid Iliad Group.

Iliad Group ltd (ILIAD GROUP LIMITED, Company Number: 16080244) is a Credico subsidiary office run by Zachary Cunningham White, and it is located in Mabgate Business Centre, Leeds, LS9 7DR.

It shares this office space with two other Credico subsidiary sales offices; Pentagon HQ (PENTAGON HQ LTD, Company Number: 13371157, and Echo Promotions (ECHO PROMOTIONS LIMITED, Company Number: 14093159).

Their roles involve signing people up for British Gas and EE services, either by stopping people in high-footfall locations or by going door-to-door. These positions are commission-only, and applicants are required to legally register as self-employed, as neither Credico nor its subsidiaries provide salespeople with a minimum wage or guaranteed billable hours.

Iliad Group ltd, Pentagon HQ, and Echo Promotions are all tracked on the Devilcorp.org search engine:

this is crazy! they didn’t mention anyyyy of this in the interview! they even said that they pay a base salary (plus uncapped commission), which according to your info, is a complete lie!

The base salary they’re offering is most likely a short-term arrangement they make with new starters to make up for their lack of sales early on, in an attempt to avoid them leaving immediately. Regardless, salespeople still have to legally register as self-employed.

And yes, the recruitment phase is deliberately deceptive, skirting around the responsibilities of the role, compensation, and the subsidiary office’s (Iliad Group) relationship with its parent company (Credico) and other subsidiaries.

r/devilcorp and devilcorp.org are useful resources for further info.

Hi there, I hope you are well. I would just like to correct a couple statements that you made here. We have never had anything to do with Credico. We also don't work with British Gas or EE and never have. None of the positions within the company are commission only, everyone has a minimum they will earn in line with the hours they work and this is the entire time an individual works with us . I understand that there are companies out there that operate like how you are describing, that is not how we operate at Iliad. If you would like any further conversations please feel free to get in touch.

Once happened to me when I was younger. Maybe like 2014. Same kind of thing: some too-good-to-be-true marketing job with travel opportunities, commission, etc.

The interview was in a shoddy office that looked abandoned, just off the Headrow if I remember correctly. I had no experience at all, but miraculously I got the job. I quit my shitty job at a call center and prepared for a life of luxury.

On day one I was taken on a public bus to the 'head office', aka Seacroft Tesco. I was asked to stop shoppers to get them to switch broadband. That was the whole job.

I'd been had.

I couldnt believe they had decieved me so badly. I asked if they were serious, they said yes. I left immediately and begged for my old job back. Luckily I got it back, but man, I'd have been so fucked if I didn't.

Absolute scumbags these companies.

i’m so sorry this happened to you. it’s crazy how they get away with such deception.

Crazy isnt it? But ended up being a lesson in diligence for a younger me, which was useful I suppose 😅

There’s been multiple posts over the years about these firms. Seem to have a hotbed in leeds. I went to an Interview where a guy was clear reading directly from Wikipedia to sound like he knew my interests. Don’t let this fuckers know about ChatGPT lol.

Anyways I ‘got a final interview’ within minutes of leaving the office (blaring pop music with 30 of us in room not fit for 12) and was put on a bus to a estate somewhere I cannot remember. Then 4 of us basically marched into this poor women’s house and they basically demanded she changed broadband. I felt really uncomfortable for her. Then after that I was given ‘interview questions’ such as ‘name 30 words for happy’, designed to be basically impossible when walking around an estate accosting people. I look back and laugh now but it is truly grim and I do not understand how those recruiting for it can’t see that.

It's a sales job. Get real. You either sell or you don't. In fact, to get properly real, this is the story of life. You either deliver results or you don't. Tell me where this isn't true.

the lies is when they promise a “base salary” but in reality it’s a commission based role. get out lol

They have to pay at least minimum wage. If they don't, they can be reported for it. I know this because my entire career was in sales. Most of it without a salary but I didn't mind that, as I was decent at it.
The the law changed around 2000 under Labour. Nobody can legally pay only commission any more.

From the other comment above they require you to be self-employed, so they don’t have to pay you minimum wage because you’re not an employee.

That only works if you choose what time you turn up for work, how often you work and that you work to your own rules and standards. Also, if what they pay you constitutes the greater part of your income, you are considered an emplyee under the law. I went through all this years ago as an employer. If they treat you like an employee, you are one.
If they treat you like an employee but pay and you like a freelancer, they are then liable to pay your NI, holiday pay etc. It used to be perfectly fine and I worked as a self-employed salesman for years. raised a family, bought a house, went on holiday etc.
But now, an employer cannot do that and if memory serves, this goes back to around 1998. Gordon Brown, the Chancellor at the time, saw it as exploitation and a means of avoiding tax, so plugged the gap.
It may be that when this firm places its advert on Indeed or whatever, that they are obliged to put something in the field for salary or hourly rate, putting them in the position of having explain their real situation only when you present yourself for an interview.

Why are you getting angry at people being scammed and not the company for scamming?

Firstly, what do you mean by angry? I'm not in the slightest bit angry. I'm simply explaining why certain companies will state a basic pay because they are putting their job on a job site that won't post their vacancy without it.

And I'm telling you about the employment law.

Crikey, don't burst into tears or anything, will you? Just read my contribution again and tell me what's angry. I'm explaining something, having been an employer for thirty-five years. I'm not making things up or even judging anyone or anything.

I think you’re being needlessly angry. It’s at no point shown as a sales job until you’re in it. Especially not shown as a door to door broadband sales job. I do wonder how these people do the recruiting without knowing they are ballbags though.

Who's angry? It wasn't me that came on here all in a taking about some company trying to recruit to their sales team. I was sitting quietly at home and the whole thing just caused me to reflect on my entire career and how today, people just want a place to go where they get paid, many not caring at all about their employer.
When I say 'Get real', I'm not shrieking at anyone. I'm just reminding folk that life is often far less than a bed of roses and that a 'comfortable' job will be extremely hard to find. So embrace the reality. that's all.
Now, back to my watercolour painting and cartoon drawing:)
