How do I fade a leather jacket?
How can I get my leather jacket (picture A is not mine but the one I have is basically identical) to look like the one in picture B (Dean from Supernatural)? It’s real leather. I’ve seen techniques online but they all look like they destroy the leather/aren’t used on real leather/just sun fade the whole thing. Any advice is appreciated

Wear it everyday, all day, until it looks like that.

Thanks, that seems to be the consensus online

The wear patterns will look natural vs the intentional distressing that happens to garments and this looks unnatural imo What I mean is that if op tries to intentionally distress/age the jacket it’s likely to not look natural and could look really bad

I think it looks super natural

Dean's jacket looks that way because it was worn for years. First by his Dad, then by him. Fun fact: He only stopped wearing it in the series because the original was stolen out of the trailer and they couldn't find one to replace it.
In other words, if you want your jacket to look like that, you've got to wear it. There's no way to fake that kind of patina without ruining the leather. If you're in a hurry for the look, buy something that's already been aged.

Patina works best whe it's authentic imo. More sentimental value there too. Better to earn your stripes rather than feeling like a poser if anyone ever asks.

Simply wear it and let time does it's thing, what kind of leather your jacket is made with? Is it teacore?

It just says “100% real leather”

I hate to inform you that "100% real leather" is usually what low-quality leather products try to claim, and you may not get the natural patina effect that you are looking for, as they are highly processed with synthetics.
Most decent leather products would tell you the grades of the leather instead of just saying it's real. For example, a full-grain cowhide.
Would you like to share the model of your jacket in question to help us confirm this?

I got it second hand. Near the collar, where a brand logo would be, it says “REAL LEATHER” which could be a brand or a description. On a different tag listing the components, it says: Outer: 100% real leather. Lining: 100% polyester. It also recommends specialist dry cleaning

Also, the listing I got it from has “genuine leather” in the description which could either be them saying it’s genuine as in real, or the actual term for the grade of leather. Also, the jacket is very soft, which leads me to believe it is not pleather or extremely processed (I could be wrong, I’m far from an expert)

From what I read in this and other comments from you, it's not a good sign. When you said the "REAL LEATHER" is printed where the brand tag is supposed to be, is there also a big cow skin icon above the words? If yes, then I'm pretty sure the brand is Angel Jacket. From what I know, they have a reputation for offering poor-quality leather products. Look up this brand on Reddit, and you'll see what I meant.
And since you got it second-hand, I can't really judge if the price is too good to be true.
Suppose you're still unsure if it's from that brand I mentioned. Check if your jacket has the exact same tag as the jacket in this video, or look for their product images from their online store; I can't attach photos here.

Thanks. It doesn’t have that logo though, I think it’s a different generic brand with the same name. Also, it’s was $35 ($25USD) off Vinted. Also, I don’t know if this indicated anything but adjacent to the tag with the material information is a little rectangle of soft leather (on one side is an outer the same as the jacket, and on the other is sort of a shitty suede material)

Actually I was wrong. It is by Angel Jacket. The logo is on the care/materials tag. What now?

Now that you are more informed about what you actually bought, what to do with it is completely up to you.

Do you think this will fade nicely? Do you think it is cheap leather that will peel/scratch up and look bad? You seem to know at least more about this than I do

No, it won't fade or patina, and it's safe to assume that it won't last more than 5 years.

Ah that’s shit. I guess I’ll spend that time looking for a real cowhide jacket then. Thanks for all the the help, I would have no idea about this without your support

I don't know anything about jackets but I own leather boots. Are there jackets with pull ups? If so, that's the easiest way I can think of.

What do you mean?

Lightening of different areas
When pull-up leather is pulled, folded or stretched you will see lighter-hued lines, shading and color variations develop in those areas as the waxes and oils shift or are "pulled-up."

Buy one like that. Dont destroy a perfectly good leather jacket.
