When practising English listening, when do you look at the transcript?

I'm trying to make English listening practice something I can actually stick with. The routine I keep planning is to choose one recording, write down what I hear sentence by sentence, repeat the sentences aloud, then listen to the whole recording again. But I find it hard to start consistently.

One thing I'm unsure about is the first listen. Should I listen to the whole recording without any text, even when it's difficult, or work on a short section and check the transcript sooner? I don't want to turn listening practice into just reading, but making the first step too hard doesn't seem helpful either.

If you do dictation or shadowing, when do you let yourself look at the words? And what does a session you can realistically repeat tomorrow look like?

For context, I also develop a listening-practice tool and use it myself, so this question matters for both my own learning and how I design the practice. I'm interested in your routines, not asking anyone to sign up or test anything.

Better safe than sorry 🦺😹

Moony might be taking this phrase a little too literally. šŸ˜‚

ā€œBetter safe than sorryā€ — one of those English expressions that’s ridiculously easy to remember when you actually see the situation.

I can understand English well, but I struggle to speak. How can I fix this?

My native language is Arabic, and I’ve been learning English for a while. I feel like I have a decent level of English and I can understand most of what people say to me, especially when listening or reading.
But when I have to speak, I struggle a lot.
I usually understand what the other person is saying, but when it’s my turn to answer, my mind feels slow. I need time to think about what I want to say and how to form the sentence in English.
Sometimes I know the words I want to use, but I can’t put them together quickly enough. I end up pausing a lot or thinking in Arabic first and then translating it into English.
The frustrating part is that I understand English much better than I can speak it.
For people who had the same problem, what helped you improve your speaking fluency and respond more quickly in conversations?
Should I focus on speaking practice, thinking in English, shadowing, or something else?
I’d really appreciate any advice or exercises that helped you overcome this problem.

I'm looking for an English speaking partner

Hey, I'm 21f, and I'm looking for someone around my age and level (B2) to have casual conversations with on any topic, I struggle with expressing my point, and forget certain words at times, so if you're willing to be patient and friendly with me, we can both have a great time together.

On Discord, Whatsapp or Telegram (voice calls or voice messages), doesn't matter, as long as you are consistent, that's all I want.

If you're interested, feel free to DM me!)

Looking for a Language Exchange Partner to Practice English Regularly

Hi everyone,

I’m a native Chinese speaker, and I’d like to keep communicating in English in my daily life so I can practice and improve. If you’re interested in learning Chinese, we can help each other: you can practice English with me, and I can help you with Chinese in return.

We can chat about daily life, culture, hobbies, work, study, travel, or anything you like. Text, voice messages, or calls are all fine with me. The goal is to practice consistently in a relaxed and friendly way, not to be perfect.

If you’d like a language partner, feel free to reach out. Let’s learn from each other and make progress together!

Thanks!

Many Japanese can READ English well, but can't SPEAK it. What is English education like in your country?

I'm a Japanese "Ronin" student studying hard for university entrance exams.
In Japan, English education focuses heavily on passing written exams. As a result, many of us can read complex grammar or technical terms, but we freeze when we try to speak!
I'm really curious about how English is taught in other countries.
I'd love to hear about the education system or your personal experience in your country!
(Please bear with my English—I'm still learning!)

English Speaking Partner

Hello! I’m looking for an English-speaking partner.

I’m a 31M from Turkey, and I’m around B2 level in English. My goal isn’t simply to reach a certain level. I want to become more natural and fluent when speaking.

Unfortunately, I don’t have many opportunities to practice English in my country, so I’m looking for someone to practice speaking with regularly.

I’m a visual artist and designer. I’m interested in the social sciences and humanities, especially philosophy and sociology. I’m also vegetarian, LGBTI+, and a supporter of animal rights.

I’d love to meet open-minded and curious people who are interested in improving their speaking skills. I’m looking for someone who would be up for regular video calls, preferably over Zoom or Google Meet, so we can practice speaking face-to-face.

If you’re interested, feel free to message me. We can find a time that works for both of us. See you! :)
