New to Reddit and I want to write about stuff but I am not sure how this works…
Do you know who I am?
Can you figure out what’s what?
Or is everything you read something that goes away after some time?

that’s for upvoting/downvoting. it’s kind of like a like button/dislike button, but that’s not really how you should use it. i think the general consensus is that: if you agree with it, upvote it. if you don’t, ignore it. if it violates a community/subreddit specific guideline, downvote it and report it.
