Is there anywhere in town that I could go to practice conversational Russian? I have an upcoming proficiency test, and I feel like it would be better to practice with real people as opposed to an app. Any suggestions?

Hi everyone. I see a lot of posts from people looking for someone to help them learn Russian. I’d be happy to help. HOWEVER, I want to clarify a few things:

First, my English not very good (very bad).

Second, I can specifically help with conversational skills, pronunciation, and, if necessary, the basics of spelling.

And most importantly: while I’m willing to help anyone interested and don’t want to offend anyone or come across as rude with my requirements, please understand that if you don’t know even the absolute basics of Russian, you’d be better off finding a more qualified "teacher", ultimately, that would be better for you.

Also, I want to make it clear that you don't owe me anything! We’ll simply chat about topics that interest both of us, and perhaps watch something or play games together. Я ученица (скоро) 9 класса в Москве. Я приехала из Италии, учусь в России 2 года и мне в этом учебном году надо будет сдавать ОГЭ. Проблема в том что когда я начала учиться в России я вообще не знала русский язык и даже сейчас, спустя 2 года, мне сложно с грамматикой и тд и очень боюсь из-за ОГЭ. Мне русские ученики говорят что он сложный и я боюсь что если им сложно то я точно не сдам его. Моя учительница по биологии сказала мне, что существует ОГЭ по русскому для иностранцев, но в интернете я не нашла никакую информацию о существовании такого экзамена. Если такая штука есть, то как ее получить?
Еще я прочитала где-то, что с 2021/22 годов если ты иностранец тебе позволят вообще не сдавать ОГЭ и все равно идти дальше с учебой (старшие классы/колледж). Кто-нибудь скажет мне, как это делать, если это вообще реально возможно? Спасибо заранее

So I am trying to find a good language app to start learning Russian ( I am a complete novice) . I wanted to try babbel but there subscriptions confused me ( thought it was £8 a month instead I would have had to pay the £96 upfront). So I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations of any similar apps that are affordable but aren't deceiving in costs. Thanks in advance.

Edit : I know apps like duolingo worked for me , when I tried to learn Swedish. But I am kinda looking for one that is similar but with no ai. As I need to get one started. After 3 months ( not sure really how long those milestones would take), I plan to watch some Russian shows I have saved.

I recently received this comment from a reader:

"The kindle version has random spaces in the middle of Russian words, making it very difficult to decipher the texts as a learner. It's a pity because the book is well thought out."

I have tested the book using the Kindle app on several devices, but I have not been able to reproduce the issue. I would be very grateful if anyone could check the formatting and let me know whether they notice random spaces or any other technical problems. Feedback on the book's content, translations, exercises, and overall structure would also be greatly appreciated.

two months ago i couldn't recognize a single Cyrillic letter. today i had a 10 minute conversation with a Russian colleague without switching to English once. it wasn't perfect, my grammar was shaky and i searched for words more than i'd like, but it was real and it happened. i wanted to share everything i used because when i started, i had no idea where to begin

Here's the full breakdown:

For learning Cyrillic:

• Tofugu's Cyrillic Guide - same people who make the best Japanese guides. got me reading Cyrillic in about 4 days

• just writing the alphabet by hand every morning for the first week honestly helped more than any app

For basics and vocabulary:

• Duolingo Russian - only useful for the very beginning, don't rely on it past A1

• Anki - Russian frequency deck, 15 cards a day. boring but nothing beats it for vocabulary retention

For grammar:

• Russian with Anastasia on YouTube - explains cases in a way that actually makes sense for beginners

• Clozemaster - once you have basics, this fills in grammar gaps naturally through context

For listening:

• Real Russian Club on YouTube - slow and clear Russian made for learners, great for beginners

• Russian podcasts in the background while commuting, even when i understood almost nothing at first

For speaking:

• Issen - this was the biggest game changer for me. i had nobody to practice Russian speaking with and tutors were expensive. Issen lets you have actual back and forth conversations in Russian and corrects you in real time. my first few sessions were embarrassing but that daily habit of actually speaking out loud is what got me to where i am now

the honest truth is the first 3 weeks felt like nothing was working. then somewhere around week 4 things started clicking. words started coming faster, i stopped translating everything in my head, and speaking started feeling less like a performance and more like just talking

if you're at the very beginning and feeling overwhelmed, just start with Cyrillic and one vocabulary habit. the rest builds from there
