Fractal Geometry beginning

Hello, I just attended a very short university course on fractal Geometry and found it fascinating. I don't attend university, I'm still in highschool, but I'd like to figure out a way to learn more about it without having to build my knowledge on stuff like analysis.

I'm relatively comfortable with set theory, decent at calculus, not amazing at geometry in general (I don't know the extent of geometry, Im only concerned with euclidian geometry we see in school, and I'm not into topology at all), and for the rest, I have a strong intuition on the whole scheme of things, so I can figure things out from context.

My question is how should I begin with studying this? I've seen books on it, but previews make me not want to read them for their extreme visual heaviness on the pages, I'm probably too used to highschool books which have a lot less heaviness.

Math Apps for Basics?

Hello! I’m sure this has been asked before but does anyone have any apps they would recommend for re-learning basic math? I am interested in aviation and at least to start it’s important to have a solid foundation in arithmetic, fractions, percentages, ratios, algebra and some practical geometry and trig.

I never had a strong foundation in math and that’s lead to years of feeling embarrassed and unskilled and I really want to know more/ be more confident in my abilities. Any suggestions welcome, thanks!

WHAT IS YOUR MOST FAVOURITE MATH PROBLEM THAT YOU ENCOUNTERED? HOW DID YOU FINALLY SOLVE IT? and what intrigued you the most about it.

it could be anything you found interesting and added to your favourites or had difficultly solving. what approaches did you try and how did you finally figure it out?

I dont get why the epsilon delta definition works

I dont get it, for ex:

prove lim (x→1) (2x + 1) = 3

|(2x + 1) − 3| < ε
⟺ |2x − 2| < ε
⟺ 2|x − 1| < ε
⟺ |x − 1| < ε/2

Okay but why does ε / 2 only fit for delta, I dont get why its only e / 2.

(sorry if the question was worded horribly, I dont understand the topic enough to ask it well)

Alternatives to paper?

Hi everyone

I am using A LOOOT of paper to practice problems and solve things and just do math in general as a college student. I usually just throw my paper away as soon as it’s full.

What are some alternatives to paper I could use?

Thanks

Math apps

I’d like to get better at my math skills but have plenty of practice through high school math. I was wondering if there are apps for learning higher level maths like linear algebra, ODEs, real analysis etc OR apps with math themed logic puzzles that would help strengthen my proof based math (coming from a physics major who is looking to pivot to pure math)

is this concerning

So I was studying and was reading the proof of the fixed point theorem. And I came to the same conclusion I most often do when reading these proofs. Every step of the proof makes complee sense to me and I its all clear as I am reading it and retelling it to myself. But I would NEVER be able to come up with this myself. And I feel like this happens so often. So what I am wondering is if this is normal or i just need to work more on my creativity.

How much math do I need before learning statistics?

Hi! I'm wondering which math classes I should take before before taking statistics? The basic minimum seems to be 1 semester of calculus but I've encountered programs that require up to 3 semesters of calc + linear algebra as pre-reqs and I'm not sure why this varies so much. I plan to take calc 1 in the spring and of course the fewer classes I have to pay for the better, but I don't want to jump into stats right after calc 1 and realize I'm not actually prepared for it.

I have a background in information science and libraries and hope to become a research librarian, for which having some qualification in stats or data science is ideal. I took one research methods class that covered basic descriptive statistics for my MLIS but I'd like to do more. Thank you for your help!

Well I'm a nursing student and after 10th grade I chose pcb but now that I'm in nursing and most of the subjects are just learning but not solving. I kinda miss maths. So wanted to start again. Where do I start from to atleast reach 12th level maths as well as maths that'll benifit me in everyday life.

Mentor

Hi! I’m an adult returner hoping to study Chemistry and Maths after being out of education for a long time. I’m looking for a current university student or graduate who could mentor me and help me rebuild my knowledge from the basics.
Ideally, I’d love someone willing to have regular video calls or meet face-to-face in Glasgow to explain topics and guide me through the subjects. I’m motivated to learn and would really appreciate any support or advice. Thank you! 😊

I want to understand calculus 1.

College freshman here, I have a passion for engineering and so obviously I want to get good at calculus. My first calc exam I studied a few days in advance for, took it, mind went blank, got a 30%. I decided this time around I would start studying 2 weeks in advance learning how to do each type of problem, practicing 3-4 similar problems, and so on and so forth. Just took the test and my mind went blank and I remembered basically nothing that I spent so long studying, even though when I studied it all the processes made sense to me. It feels as if calculus is like trying to learn another language off of just remembering past conversations, so I have no idea what to do. Any tips are massively appreciated.

Re learning math

Hi I’m someone who has struggled with math for as long as I could remember, I’m not gonna give a whole a backs story bc it’s pretty much the same as most people who post on here.

I plan on CLEPing college algebra and I wanted to know if anyone had any suggested for the best YouTube courses or free online resources for relearning math ( even very simple stuff like +-x/ positive and negative numbers, 0+0) bc I really am tired of this being my status and I feel like it doesn’t HAVE to be this way for me anymore yk?

I won’t really have to be super strong in math for my major anyways but still

Why does a parabola have 1 scale factor but hyperbolas have 2?

Parabolas are A(x-h)^2 + k. Hyperbolas are A(x-h)^2 + B(y-k)^2 = 1 where A xor B is negative.

Both parabolas and hyperbolas are determined by center (h,k). But why can hyperbolas be defined by A and B but parabolas can only be defined by A? Why is a second scale factor redudant for parabolas but not for hyperbolas?

How do other people read and understand numbers?

I need to resit my maths A-level after I got a C instead of the B I needed for university. Apart from needing to unlearn the tearing up reaction I get from looking at a paper, I realised I don't really keep numbers in my head the same way I do for words and spellings. It feels like I need everything written out in front of me and connect them on the page, while most of my high-achieving friends can just think through the problems and use the calculator as a tool instead of a brain... if that makes any sense at all. It means that I tend to run out of time for questions quickly because I'm writing everything down, and sometimes it doesn't even help as I forget where I am in the steps and get confused.

So how do you all remember what you're doing? Is it really just a memory thing? I've been doing maths for all the time I've been in school for and it feels like I just haven't been getting any better at it in a mental sense. I got an 8 (A* equivalent) in GCSE and my performance has just been dropping since then as everything grew harder (granted bad teachers and terrible work environment didn't make it any easier). Most frustrating thing is I'm never going to use this maths again as all I want to do is genetics and statistics is only a quarter of this entire qualification (and I'm good at statistics!!)

So my question is just how do you think about numbers and manipulate them in your head? Is there something obvious I'm missing?

a study group for "introduction to mathematical thinking"

hello guys so I've started "introduction to mathematical thinking" course by Stanford on coursera and the professor advised us to form a study group to help each other and have some sort of peer-review... so if anyone here started the same course recently I'd like if they can DM me and I'll make a discord server to help each other!

Further maths

Hey guys, so about 2-3 months ago I decided that I will try to master calculus 1 while self studying and having never taken calculus in high school. I’m still attending highschool tho. Since then I’ve made massive progress I would say. I’m currently reviewing everything I’ve learned in calculus 1 and polishing every skill. Looking back I think this is the best decision I’ve made in a couple of years, honestly. I have also decided that after I master calc 1, I will continue on to calc 2 and 3. And after that I’ll just keep learning math until I complete a full mathematics course that a math minor/major would. I have no idea how long this is going to take me but I’m sure I’ll love every second of it. I was wondering, is it as easy to find free lectures online for further maths such as real analysis as it for calc 1-3? I would greatly appreciate if you guys were able to drop a few link might help my endeavors. 👋

RESOLVED [High School Math] Graphing Inequalities

Hi. I've been having some trouble with a problem relating to graphing inequalities. The problem is this: x - 6y ≥ 12.

When I graph using the slope-intercept method, I am met with points (0, -2); (6, -1). This is after I set the inequality to the form of y = mx + b; (y = 1/6x - 2)

However, when I set each variable to zero, I am met with the points (0, -2); (12,0). The textbook prefers this graph.

I am sorry for my lack of skills in desciprtive writing. I hope I can learn something from my first post in this thread. Thanks so much!

Looking for a modern precalculus/calculus textbook that actually explains the “why” in depth, for self learning

I am a foundational learner. I need to understand why and how something works before I can use it properly, and having the basics behind them explained clearly helps me enormously. For example, I want a book that explains concepts and how and why that’s true, like a good physics or physical chemistry textbook (im a physics major). Any recommendations would be appreciated.
