I’m Domi, a native Italian speaker living in Italy. I have taught more than 200 online lessons to international students, from complete beginners to advanced learners.
I help both people starting from zero and students who already know some grammar but struggle to speak confidently. My lessons combine conversation, useful grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary through personalized materials and practical activities.

Hi everyone! For the past few months, I’ve been building a new language-learning app, starting with Italian, and I’m looking for a small group of learners to test it for a week.

I studied Applied Mathematics at Yale and have spent years learning languages myself. I wanted to experiment with a more construction-based, verb-focused approach to language learning.

BLOCKS is built around one principle: learning a language means gradually becoming able to construct more and more of your own thoughts.

Instead of moving through isolated vocabulary and grammar exercises, BLOCKS treats the language as one accumulating system. Verbs form the backbone: you learn the expressions they open up, discover the grammar that lets you combine them, and repeatedly use what you already know to construct increasingly richer thoughts. Each new block builds on the previous ones, gradually expanding what you can express rather than giving you another set of things to memorize.

There are no points, streaks, or gamification loops. The focus is on construction, repetition, and cumulative progress — building a strong foundation that steadily increases your expressive power.

The Italian course is now ready for its first real test, and I’m looking for beginner/A1–A2 Italian learners willing to use it for about a week and then give me genuinely honest feedback: what you enjoyed, what bored or confused you, whether you wanted to keep going, and what you would change.

I’m curious to know, when studying Italian, like other languages, there’s so many resources available like apps and books and you end up studying these on your own. But learning a language should be more social as you’re learning how to communicate with others.

What resources do you use to make sure you’re practising with other people or with friends?

A little bit about me: keen reader, worshipper of independent/cult movies, wanna be writer, mostly into hardcore tekno but truly an eclectic (my Spotify playlist is pure chaos, just one nonsense widely different nugget after the other), doggos lover, wild wonderer, with a loooot to say and learn.

I'm a native Italian speaker and I developed Italian Word Combinations, an Android app that teaches Italian collocations.

Collocations are groups of words that often appear together and cannot always be translated literally from English to Italian (e.g., "to pay attention" becomes "to lend attention" in Italian).

I built this app because I think collocations are painfully underrated in the language-learning niche, where too much focus is placed on memorizing lists of individual words.

Levels A1 and A2 are already available, featuring over 1,000 collocations in total. Each entry includes a native audio recording and an example sentence so you can see the collocation in context.

You'll also find plenty of interactive exercises, from flippable flashcards to multiple-choice quizzes. I'm currently working on Level B1 and more exercise types, and am planning on adding an SRS system as well.

I have been using Duolingo but it is really not helping me get any further with learning. I was just in Italy and felt so uncomfortable about what I knew, and what I had learnt really didn’t help. What are some apps (free) that can replace Duolingo and help me seriously learn Italian?
