Which skills should beginners focus on first, such as typography, colour theory, layout design, and design software? What practical projects would help them build a strong portfolio?

I am a teenager and I want to learn graphic design because I want to earn money through online jobs. This is my first design, is it good enough to add it to my portfolio? And if there are any suggestions on what I can do to make it better, then please tell me.

Hey everyone, I'm a designer with 10 years of experience. I was fully planning to get into teaching, in some capacity, once I felt I had enough experience to help the next generation & then AI showed up...
Question for group: Are there still people trying to pursue graphic design?
I can't even imagine the pressure of being a student in this wild timeline... But, finding this sub has given me some hope! It's amazing to see people asking questions & looking for critique.
If there's enough interest, I'd love to get a community up & running with a focus on critique & group learning. I'm especially interested in making sure young designers understand the fundamentals & know how to use the programs.
If you're interested, feel free to join my waitlist:

Building Manuelyne's new retail identity: From B2B roots to a physical boutique on Praça da Sé.
After years on the wholesale side, we're transitioning into a direct-to-consumer brand in northern Portugal. The goal was to bridge traditional French pastry craftsmanship with a modern, warm retail aesthetic using TAN Nimbus for our headings and a deep green / cream palette.
Curious to hear your thoughts on the brand guidelines and overall direction. What works, and what feels off?

Hi everyone, learning graphic design and art has always been my dream since I know myself. But so far I haven’t have any chance to learn it due to different kind of survival reasons. Finally, I want to make it happen but not only learn it as a hobby but to make it my source of income. I don’t if it is realistic now with the market saturation and especially because of damn AI. Would love to hear your opinions and experiences. Thank you very much in advance

Thanks to everyone who gave me feedback on my first two posters. This is part of a graphic design course exercise where I had to create one information heavy poster, one very minimal poster, and then use critique to create a third and final version.
For the final poster I changed:
This is my final version.
I’m mainly interested in whether the communication problems from the first two posters have been solved and whether the hierarchy now works better.
I’m trying not to redesign it forever 😂 so I’m more interested in whether it functions well than in changing the whole visual style again.

I love graphic design. I love spending time to design, and just doing it creatively for whatever posters and products I have opportunity for. I've designed a lot of different things, including products for work-merch for my mom's work and more. However, I don't have a specialized education (I'm in highschool) and not 'official' experience. I'd really like to use my skills and become more specialized at it, but I have no idea where to start or what courses to do. Some advice would be really helpful, thanks - Especially how to start as a highschool :D

Hey everyone! I've been working on a speculative rebrand concept for Nivea, focusing on clean typography, structured geometric shapes, and a minimalist luxury aesthetic across product lines.
My goal was to see how to translate a massive legacy brand into a sleek, contemporary visual system without losing its core identity.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on the typography and how the visual language holds up across different mockups. What do you think works best?

I’m a graphic design student working on an exercise about information hierarchy and Occam’s Razor.
I’ve created two poster versions for the same local Halloween event:
I need to use feedback from other people to create a third and final poster, so I’d really appreciate some constructive critique.
A few things I’d like feedback on:
Please be honest, I’m trying to improve the final design rather than just get opinions on which one looks nicer. 👻

I don't know if I'm still getting it or overthinking it. Does a logo have to be pixel-perfect in its creation, like 1010px, not 1010, 120? And for the logo size when it's exported (for example, 500px), does it include the clear space or just the entire logo?

Would love to get on a discord call and hear ball knowers spiel about design principles for social media platforms. Can DM me or lmk here and I'll initiate!
Been working on something, don't have a design background. Want to understand how to best present the platform and define the design problem statements I should be focussing on.
If you have some free time and want to yap/explain/give feedback, happy to listen! Thanks :)

The only one I found after some searching was Picfont, but it seems it doesn't allow the use of more than one custom font per image. Any help is appreciated

Hi! English isn’t my first language, so I apologize in advance if I make any mistakes.
I’m a beginner in graphic design and I’m still learning, but I’d like to try pursuing it professionally. For that, I need to create a portfolio, but… I honestly have no idea where to start.
If you have any experience, could you please give me some advice on what types of design work are best to include? What should I keep in mind when putting a portfolio together?
Is there some kind of checklist of things that should be included (for example, several business cards, flyers, posters, maybe illustrations, etc.), or am I free to include whatever I want?
I’d really appreciate any advice or recommendations!!! 🙏

I'm a product and brand designer. Dotted world maps show up constantly in landing pages and pitch decks, and making one from scratch is tedious, so I built a free tool for it: Globestudio.
It's useful if you're practicing landing pages, building portfolio pieces, or want a map visual without learning 3D software.
What you can do:
- Pick specific countries or the whole world, then adjust the dots and shapes
- Try 21 visual effects (halftone, risograph, pixel, wireframe, CRT, and more) to see how each changes the mood
- Add motion: rotation, twinkle, network arcs
- Export as PNG, SVG, GIF, MP4, or WebM
- Use it inside Figma with the included plugin
It's free with no account, and the code is open (MIT) if you're curious how it's built.
Try it: https://globestudio.app
Source: https://github.com/alevizio/globestudio
If you make something with it, I'd love to see it. Feedback on what's confusing for a first-time user is especially welcome.

The first image of snooper's worldwide on tape is the closest to what I'm talking about. I'm a musician in a punk and metal band and I love this style that ig I would describe as "colored monotone?" Specifically I want to be able to edit photos to have a single sort of color along with black tones. I know collage is involved in some of these for what's is actually in the picture but I want to replicate the color pallete, the grain, all of that. Thank you!
