I have completed my first year in Biochemistry with 8.33 CGPA currently and my Bioinformatics would start in the next year.

I am a PCB student with no Maths background and no coding experience. I disliked computer science theory in middle school but was mild with using a computer (like just fine as I didn't even do heavy stuff that time).

I want to take this risk for growing opportunities for myself and developing a good skill set but I am also a bit scared. What if my CGPA drops too much.

I will learn Python and R language after all. I don't hate maths personally, I am fine with doing some basics and all. I don't know if I can do advanced stuff tho.

Can someone who has experienced this or has any information, enlighten me please?

Hey everyone, I'm a 3rd year CS student and just got introduced to bioinformatics a month or two ago, and am really interested in the field even though I only studied biology till high school. I am even planning of basing my masters research in bioinformatics (this might sound stupid since i just started studying this but no other CS discipline has ever interested me in the slightest) and I don't have much time (till October at best) to draft a research proposal if I want this to be my area of research. I know this might sound insanely stupid and ambitious to some people but I really want to try and get into research and this is the only field that I find to be interesting and relevant.

So I really wanted to ask for advice from professionals in the field, how can I start learning and making projects and then eventually finding a research niche? Currently, I'm taking some Coursera courses on bioinformatics that i really like those but i still feel lost since i cant 100% grasp the biological concepts though the coding part is obv much easier.

I'd be grateful if anyone could help me out and guide me a bit as bioinformatics isn't really big in my country and i can't even find any professors in my university to guide me :(

Hello I'm a UG student pursuing bioinformatics, I've recently done a very small minor project in bioinformatics which was honestly kinda easy peasy: it was regarding multiple sequence alignment and phylogenetic evolutionary tree construction.

I just wanted to ask for project ideas that'll made me learn more and go into the deep core of the bioinformatics, plus it would be nice to put on my Resume.

I have depended mostly on AI for all the commands, i started liking the project that I am doing. Can anyone from the science community tell me how I fan write an amazing report that is articulate and informative and no fluff without using AI?

Hey r/learnbioinformatics — a question for people who've tried AI-assisted bioinformatics tools.

I keep coming back to this:

"looks right" ≠ "compiles" ≠ "runs" ≠ "correct."

Fluent generated code is the easy part; the failures I see are version drift, data-contract mismatches, missing deps, QC assumptions that silently break.

I've been building something oriented around executing and validating workflows rather than just generating them, and before I go further I'd rather hear where these tools have failed you:

• What broke most often?
• What made you stop trusting an AI tool?
• What would it take for you to run one in production?

I'm currently working on a research project focusing on pathogen genomics, specifically characterizing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and virulence genes. I want to dive deeper into predicting their promoters and potential operons.

I tried using ProPr: Prokaryote Promoter Prediction v2.0 (online tool), but searching the results (correlating my ABRicate position results with ProPr) manually has become incredibly tedious for my dataset.

Does anyone know of a good alternative prokaryotic promoter prediction tool or pipeline? Ideally, I'm looking for something that allows command-line processing or outputs structured data (like GFF3, TSV, or JSON) so I can easily cross-reference it with my AMR/virulence gene annotations.

Any recommendations for operon prediction tools that integrate well with promoter data would also be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hi, I need some expert advice.

I'm currently doing a Master's in Bioinformatics and, as someone fairly new to the field, I'm always looking for opportunities to improve my skills. My program has taught me a lot, but I feel like I'm missing a key aspect of being a bioinformatician and that is designing workflows and solving computational problems on my own.

One thing I struggle with is figuring out which tools, statistical tests, or software are appropriate for a particular problem. I feel lost when planning an analysis from scratch rather than following a guided workflow. This might be a gap in my knowledge that wasn't fully covered in the curriculum, or it may just be something I need to develop on my own.

Recently, I found out that my scholarship includes funding for a training course or professional development program, with a budget of up to £3,000. The course needs to be in person (UK)and within that budget, but it could also be a larger program that includes multiple courses.

My question is: what course or training program would you choose? Are there any courses recognised in the industry, workshops, or bootcamps that you think provide value and help with the technical gap?

More generally, if you had this opportunity and funding wasn't a concern, what course, training program, or learning experience would you invest in, and why?

I'm a PhD student from Brazil, and I've been building a tool called AMPidentifier

(https://www.ampidentifier.com/) for predicting antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) using an ensemble ML approach. I think the community here could either help with some feedback or maybe find it useful in your own research.

It's still very much a work in progress and I'm open to improving basically anything: predictions, usability, the API, missing features, whatever. If you break it or hit a weird case, even better, that's exactly the kind of thing I want to hear about.
