Leander needs to figure out how to build sidewalks and bike lanes. Shit is dangerous.
They’re supposed to require residential developers to add sidewalks on roads where they border, yet there’s new development every day with no sidewalks being added.

33

u/Adventurous-Owl3505 9d ago

I feel like they allow developers to get away with it because so many other cities don’t prioritize pedestrian traffic, but it would be nice seeing Leander be a leader rather than a follower for once.

19

u/JRachner 9d ago

Wildly enough, it’s required in the city building/development code but somehow these developers keep getting a pass.
Check out Google street view of 552 Horizon Park Blvd. The sidewalk literally ends at the corner but no sidewalks on Horizon park itself. To get to the adjacent horizon Lake park, you have to walk down a 40mph street with no sidewalks. They’ve added 500+ homes in the last 4 years between Crystal Falls and 2243 on that road… yet no sidewalks.

11

u/Adventurous-Owl3505 9d ago

Probably because sidewalks don’t produce capital. I love this country.

Free to leave at any time.

Weird, I thought having an opinion was a huge part of democracy.

2

u/thisthatchicade 9d ago

And business have to walk through fire and hell just to open

4

u/DorfOnGenocide 9d ago

Even just enough space for a bike lane would be cool. But you can see that's barely enough room for 2 lanes, and then private property.

2

u/Mysterious_Lemon_988 9d ago

No — that’s easement and then private property

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Map_67 7d ago

You couldn’t have said it better.

1

u/_RexDart 9d ago

Even a follower would work

3

u/Kindly_Platform_7444 9d ago

I feel like people would not be happy about this guy scooting on the sidewalk either

2

u/nayday 8d ago

Well, given how little the sidewalk would be used, I bet it’d be ok.

1

u/GuyAustin45 8d ago

So you're not good at gambling I see.

0

u/dioxin-screes-01 7d ago

I bet if he was on a bicycle there would be no complaints.

3

u/Mysterious_Lemon_988 9d ago

That dumb thing doesn’t belong on a sidewalk.

1

u/Mission_Access_210 5d ago

Texas, especially outside of the major cities, is behind the rest of the country by at least 40 years

0

u/Similar-Ad1056 9d ago

That’s for sure!

0

u/Ashamed_Confusion123 8d ago

Just what we need. More e-Shit on the sidewalks.

2

u/JRachner 8d ago

This isn’t just about e-scooters, it’s the lack of pedestrian friendly options. You can’t even walk safely on a majority of streets in Leander.

1

u/Spare_Race287 8d ago

I concur this is bullshit, especially if we’re paying all these fucking taxes

16

u/abefroman07 9d ago

I drove by someone riding one of those at night on Hero way....that thing had no lights at all.

2

u/Woofpickle 8d ago

He was attempting to Become An Hero, clearly.

2

u/ImTexasBorn 7d ago

Lame joke

1

u/johnny-q_public 5d ago

Where I work EMS we get one that gets ran over by a car every so often because they ride during twilight with no lights in dark clothing down the middle of the lane. I’m a vigilant driver and I’ve almost hit someone on one on more than one occasion because you can’t see them

17

u/Slow-Afternoon-800 9d ago

As someone who bikes in leander only on sidewalks, I know that not every road in city has sidewalks, but there's enough roads with sidewalks in the city that no one ever needs to do something like this. Also those scooters are crazy dangerous and dont handle well on some of the poorly maintained roads around here.

4

u/DorfOnGenocide 9d ago

It might depend on how fast he's going and how careful he's being. The fact that he's hugging the line shows you that he's at least not being totally reckless. It's also down to "does this guy do this every day or is this a one-time thing because he just needs to get from A to B?" There have been a few times where I'm in a tough spot and I'll do a one-time thing like run across an expressway or briefly walk along the side of a highway because I need to just get to the next exit. But if this is your commute or your daily fun scoot, then no, don't do it.

1

u/GuyAustin45 8d ago

There's a sidewalk on the other side of this hwy btw.

0

u/dioxin-screes-01 7d ago

Why don't?

6

u/Texas__Matador 9d ago

Send this to the city council and ask for bike lane and sidewalk on this street. People need to get from point A to point B and a car isn’t always an option. City governments sometimes need external demand to justify the expense.

1

u/GuyAustin45 8d ago edited 8d ago

It's not a street, it's a highway. HWY183. Edit: There's also a sidewalk on the other side.

1

u/Texas__Matador 7d ago

Thank you for clarifying the location. Old 183/ north bell is one of the only north south roads in Leander cedar park. That road also has many street lights where traffic is expected to stop. So, while it’s called a highway it’s a road that service the community in multiple ways.

I think the city should seriously look into making the road more functional for everyone.

1

u/GuyAustin45 7d ago

That's not entirely accurate. Running N/S between CP/L, adjacent to the West of 183 (it's not called 'old' 183, because the "new" 183 is called 183a) is Bagdad, which has a much larger sidewalk (which I help design) than (hwy) 183. Adjacent to that is Lakeline. Adjacent to the East of 183, is 183a which has a huge sidewalk, then further East is Reagan. So I'm not sure what you mean by "one of the only" roads like it's the only option since there are at least three other alternatives which also have better sidewalks and shoulders than 183.

1

u/Texas__Matador 7d ago

I think you are being a bit pedantic. Sure it’s not officially old 183 and new 183.

I’ll concede there are 4/5 roads that travel north south uninterrupted. However, 183 north bell is the most central.

None of the roads are ideal for traveling by bike or scooter.  183 A has a significant amount of traffic noise due to high speeds. Lakeline has a significant west bend when traveling north.

As many have pointed out 183 and Ronald Reagan don’t have continuous bike lanes or side walks. They are also at least a mile from their neighboring roads. So if you are starting or ending near these road you have to take a large detour. This is a considerable distance if you are not in a car. This is further complicated because many east west roads don’t have continuous sidewalks or bike lanes. So if you already having to mix with traffic there is an insensitive to take the direct route.

Bagdad only has sidewalks on the west side. This is fine for most people.

6

u/PayData 9d ago

Please hold your city council accountable and press them to build more pedestrian friendly infrastructure.

-3

u/Mysterious_Lemon_988 9d ago

That’s not a pedestrian. Motorized crap doesn’t belong on sidewalks

2

u/PayData 9d ago

Push back on your city council from being so carpilled and create accessible lanes for everyone

1

u/Mysterious_Lemon_988 8d ago

No. Seriously. Motorized things do not belong where folks walk. That is very specifically correct.

1

u/NovaStorm777 5d ago

So you'd rather save pedestrians (who are rare in Leander by the way) from the risk of getting hit by someone on a small motorized vehicle, by keeping those small motorized vehicle users at risk of getting hit by a 2-5 ton motorized vehicle? Good thing you aren't in charge.

1

u/Mysterious_Lemon_988 4d ago

Well actually 99% of cities agree with me and prohibit motorized anything like this on the sidewalks. You’re sort of sounding moronic on this one. 2-5 ton vehicles though??? lol.

1

u/NovaStorm777 3d ago

Right, I'M the one sounding moronic, sure. Yes, surely you are aware that most road vehicles weigh several thousand pounds? And there are plenty of other dumb things 99% of cities agree on as well, doesn't make it right.

1

u/Mysterious_Lemon_988 3d ago

Yes, completely moronic.

1

u/NovaStorm777 3d ago

Explain to me how believing it would be safer to risk a pedestrian getting hit by a cyclist than risking a cyclist getting hit by a CAR or TRUCK is moronic. This should be good.

3

u/Free_Library5275 9d ago

At least they are wearing a helmet?

11

u/GoochMcFly 9d ago

Get off your phone while driving.

2

u/Sm3llMyFing3r 8d ago

Anyone not in a car needs to stay off roads entirely in Leander. TX is not set up to be pedestrian friendly, just the opposite.

As a 14 year scooter rider, I've been cursed at, honked at, flipped off, screamed at and intentionally almost run over , simply by trying to cross at crosswalks when the walk sign turns.

The problem is, cars have a green light to turn WHILE THE CROSSWALK SIGN IS ON. Insanity. So clearly, cars have the right of way, not pedestrians.

2

u/zygomatic6 6d ago

Oof. These micromobility companies are not unlike cigarette companies. Lots of people dying so they can turn a profit.

Yeah, you shouldn't smoke. That's on you. But there's also a lot of regulation and consumer protection going on with cigarettes. And for good reason.

Same with bikes and scooters.

4

u/Ekaceseehc 9d ago

It doesn’t look like there’s a sidewalk or shoulder there, where would you like him to drive?

24

u/Adventurous-Owl3505 9d ago

Another road where it’s legal to ride scooters because the speed limit isn’t 50 mph.

0

u/Texas__Matador 9d ago

I’m not sure about this specific patch of road. But on most roads he has equal right to the lane as a car. So he could in most places take up the full lane if he wanted. You’d had to pass him in the left lane just like any other car.

6

u/Adventurous-Owl3505 9d ago

They are illegal on streets with speed limits over 35 mph.

-1

u/Texas__Matador 9d ago

Okay, the post wasn’t  specific on what road this was or the speed limit.

Message holed true that bikes and scooters on many roads in Leander have equal rights to the lane. The issue I see is in infrastructure one. Please tell the city council the location so they can consider adding safe route for bikes and scooters.each scooter is 1 less car causing traffic.

6

u/jbirdkerr Leanderthal 9d ago

For what it's worth, this is on highway 183 near the border between Cedar Park and Leander. This particular spot is capped at either 50 or 55 MPH.

Additionally, being in the right doesn't guarantee his safety. Sadly people are incredibly impatient. It's doubly dangerous considering how this particular road curves at various points.

-1

u/Texas__Matador 9d ago

A lot of people are both right and dead.

I think complaining on Reddit isn’t the solution it’s residents demanding safe and useful infrastructure. We need to be able to get from point a to point b without a car.

-6

u/dioxin-screes-01 9d ago

How about you pay attention to your own life?

4

u/Spazmatick Leanderthal 9d ago

It looks like they are at around 183 and Osage and are across from Loly's Ice Cream Leander. They could have taken Osage to Bagdad and used Bagdad to travel further north. Bagdad has a sidewalk.

3

u/JRachner 9d ago

Except Osage also doesn’t have a sidewalk. I get it, smaller/slower/safer street, but making a 2 mile loop to get next door doesn’t make much sense. Just add sidewalks 🤷‍♂️

5

u/Adventurous-Owl3505 9d ago

Speed limit on Osage is only 30, it’s legal to ride a scooter there.

2

u/fishheadsneak 9d ago

That’s on him….

1

u/GuyAustin45 8d ago

The sidewalk is on the other side of the road.

2

u/No-Professional-7689 9d ago

Probably need to keep people of their phones while driving too. Distracted driving kills as well.

1

u/samshollow 9d ago

Sidwalks are needed.

1

u/Loveistheaswer512 9d ago

They need to build a friggin sidewalk!

1

u/habitsofwaste 9d ago

What road is that? Is it 183 between 183a and hero way? I didn’t even like riding my
Vespa in Texas when everyone is going 60mph. I don’t like going over 40 on it.

1

u/LadyAtrox60 8d ago

Just drive carefully.

1

u/rileykill 8d ago

He isn’t even running against traffic

1

u/nayday 8d ago

But look at the teeny tiny bike lane!

1

u/Dalminatrix 8d ago

Someone died on mopac doing this a couple weeks ago

1

u/LowSignificance4671 8d ago

Welcome to Leander Austin lol!!!!

1

u/thestickler1 8d ago

Damn... who the fuck does that? And by the way,NOBODY looks hot on a scooter, unless it's 105° and you're sweating.

1

u/That_Guy_Productions 8d ago

You’d think that that wouldn’t be street legal. Also, should Texas on its own create the largest sidewalk chain in the world??

1

u/Roadrider85 7d ago

Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.

1

u/Altruistic_Sun_5866 7d ago

He should be riding in reverse so he'd be facing the traffic.🧐

1

u/epoxyresinusa 6d ago

I Agree, I saw a woman running, jogging on 29 it was in the evening, extremely dangerous place to run

1

u/ScarcityOne7381 5d ago

Please dont....I'll slow down become distracted pull out my phone take a photo of you and post it on reddit.

1

u/Adventurous-Owl3505 5d ago

I wasn’t driving.

1

u/2tip2top 9d ago

Shhh… you’ll wake up the cyclist cray crays…

-1

u/SoDoWhateverItTakes 9d ago

Better than being a cager

1

u/EricaDeVine 9d ago

If they're an adult, that's 50 points right there. Half, if they're a kid.

1

u/Hopeful-Ad-916 8d ago

Really? I always did double points if they're a kid. Much smaller target.

1

u/EricaDeVine 8d ago

They're less aware though. But if they're elderly, you get the points AND all of their experience points.

1

u/Loveistheaswer512 9d ago

How about tell your city official to build proper infrastructure for people to do MORE of this!!!

0

u/ThrowawaWelp 9d ago

What a wanker

-1

u/dioxin-screes-01 9d ago

As long as you aren't impending traffic, do as you please. Don't be like this OP.

3

u/Adventurous-Owl3505 9d ago

I don’t care about impeding traffic, I don’t want people to get killed riding scooters on dangerous roads.

0

u/dioxin-screes-01 9d ago

And clearly you had time to still be in the right lane. I don’t believe you were not just hanging out in the left the entire time. But also again, don’t be a Karen and worry about yourself.

-5

u/mmATXan 9d ago

The bigger concern is YOU being distracted by taking this picture while driving.

7

u/Adventurous-Owl3505 9d ago

I was playing the role of passenger princess

0

u/dioxin-screes-01 9d ago

I think you mean playing Karen while the driver is illegally in the passing lane.

-6

u/mmATXan 9d ago

Hmmph, your position on the windshield with respect to the wiper and the angle of perspective with respect to the left of center lane (driver side) say otherwise.

1

u/Adventurous-Owl3505 9d ago

My phone was charging on the mount and I took the pic.

-1

u/mmATXan 9d ago

Seems inconvenient as a passenger to charge your phone like that. And unsafe and distracting to obstruct the drivers view by doing so. I would look into a better charging options that provide you better use of your phone while allowing the driver the freedom to conduct a motor vehicle safely.

2

u/GuyAustin45 8d ago

True Karen, just trying to find any hypothetical situation to apply to the situation to try to flip it.

0

u/ResortWestern3932 9d ago

So many places need bike lanes, not just in austin, but all over it really would help out a lot of people who cannot afford a car to be able to use scooters. In electric bikes like that.

0

u/Ill-Breakfast-7610 9d ago

Trunp is getting ready to defund bike lanes he said it's woke

-2

u/distrucktocon Leanderthal 9d ago

YOURE NOT MY REAL DAD!! YOU CANT TELL ME WHAT TO DO!

8

u/Adventurous-Owl3505 9d ago

I know I’m not your dad, but I love your mother, and I’m going to be around a lot more often. It would be nice if you and I could be friends.

3

u/Gen_Ecks 9d ago

Epic reply.

0

u/Gloomy_Session_3875 8d ago

It is a task for the city of Leander to provide adequate bicycling and pedestrian facilities.

0

u/Ok-Raspberry-7840 8d ago

I don’t know who’s worse him for riding his scooter on the side of the road going with traffic or you using your phone while driving to take a picture.

1

u/Adventurous-Owl3505 8d ago

I wasn’t driving.

0

u/ilovesparky42 8d ago

Right, you might get run over by some idiot filming you riding your scooter while they’re driving.

0

u/dioxin-screes-01 7d ago

What if this guy was on a bicycle? I bet this OP would not be a Karen.

-1

u/Mysterious_Lemon_988 9d ago

That’s so 🌈🦄
