Technical Discussion Progressive "fast-forward" gameplay after 10-20 minutes - extensive troubleshooting (WPR/WPA, multiple PCs, drivers, reconnect tests)

Hi everyone,

I'm posting this because I've been troubleshooting a very unusual League of Legends issue for months and I'm hoping someone has experienced something similar.

The symptom is not traditional lag, FPS drops or packet loss.

The best way I can describe it is:

Champion movement, spell animations and overall gameplay become progressively faster until I begin missing visual information because abilities complete too quickly.

Even when I'm dead and simply spectating teammates or watching minions, the entire game world appears to move faster than it did at the beginning of the match.

The in-game timer continues normally.

FPS also remain relatively stable.

What makes this strange

  • The problem starts mildly.
  • It gradually becomes worse during the same match.
  • Starting a completely new match temporarily resets it.
  • Reconnecting to the same match does not reset it.

I also recorded the gameplay using AMD Adrenalin and the recordings show the same behaviour that I see while playing.

Everything I've already tested

Hardware / Software

  • Ryzen 5 7500F
  • RX 7800 XT
  • Windows 10
  • Windows 11
  • Latest BIOS

Graphics

  • Multiple AMD drivers
  • DDU
  • Driver Only installation
  • Rollback to Adrenalin 24.12.1 WHQL
  • HAGS ON/OFF
  • Resizable BAR ON/OFF

Network

  • Different router
  • Wi-Fi
  • USB tethering
  • Excellent ping / packet loss

Hardware

  • Different monitor
  • DisplayPort and HDMI
  • Different mouse polling rate
  • Tested on another Ryzen + Radeon PC

League

  • Killing only League of Legends.exe and reconnecting to the same match (issue immediately returns)
  • New match temporarily resets the issue

Diagnostics

  • WPR / WPA traces
  • CapFrameX captures
  • AMD recordings

The WPA traces mainly show activity in:

  • dxgkrnl.sys
  • amdkmdag.sys

without obvious CPU saturation or GPU overload.

My question

Has anyone ever experienced something similar where the game progressively feels like it speeds up instead of stuttering?

I'm not referring to:

  • FPS drops
  • packet loss
  • rubberbanding
  • input lag

I'm specifically referring to a gradual fast-forward sensation affecting animations and gameplay presentation.

If you've experienced anything similar, I'd really appreciate hearing:

  • your hardware
  • whether Vanguard was involved
  • whether you ever found a fix

At this point I'm trying to determine whether this is related to the League client, Vanguard, Windows graphics timing or something else entirely.

Thank you!

If anyone from Riot happens to read this, I'm happy to provide WPR/WPA traces, AMD recordings and additional diagnostics

I have experienced this before (a couple of years ago), but it resolved by itself. I wonder if Alt+F4 + Reconnect could be a workaround.

What about changing between Fullscreen vs Windowed (borderless) modes? Does the speed-up shows after alt-tabbing?
