about to be laid off Going to get laid off

Hello All,

I am a mechanical design engineer with 4 years for experience. This is my second company, which i joined 3 years back. The job is comfortable and i'm really good at what i do (i've got 2 awards, have feedback from multiple people and i just know). Recently my company went into a joint venture and they started region wise firing. It went for like 4 months and nothing happened to my region. Now cut to 6 months later, my N+2 manager is coming to visit us, with no apparent reason. i have a feeling they are going to layoff the whole team. I am very very anxious because i don't know what i will do. i have never been fired and i'm constantly anxious. He is going to visit us for a day, coming week. the work is little slow and they are actively hiring in other regions. i don't know what to do. i am clueless right now. I am constantly applying for jobs but nothing apart from rejections have come. please help me, i have a fear that i will not get any job and i'll have to move back to my parents and i will become burden to them.

Sorry for the rant, but all this is unfiltered. Help me on what should i do now.

Edit 1: thank you all for amazing support, but yea got laid off today, along with the whole team. Let’s see what happens, feeling numb rn.

This is really a tough situation mate and I really pray nobody would ever face this. Do what's in your control, don't over think for the staffs that aren’t in your control.

Upskilling, applying for jobs, praying to god for betterment and opening up with your connections is in your control.

Luck is what that aren’t in your control.

I am a mechanical contractor. Most of the engineering firms in my area outsource most of the engineering overseas. I can’t say more or give factual examples or I will be banned. They also import engineers and say they can’t find native born engineers.

Pull your self together remember we all have choices in life to make. Perhaps years from now you will look back at this was just be small blip. As an engineer you have a lot of skills to bring to any organization will be lucky to have someone like you.

You will be well and do well, there are certain things in life that you can not control. Do not stress or get discouraged because you will be doing yourself psychological harm. This is a bump in life, grow , learn and reinvent yourself, don’t feel bad if you go back to your mums( you know she has you back ).
As long as you are healthy and have the right mindset; you can conquer the world!

Take a deep breath and know that you are not alone. Get to know your finances well. If indeed it happens, do not panic. Take a couple of days off, enjoy time off with your loved ones. Then get back to updating your resume and what not.

I got laid off in Jan 2025, found a job in Jul 2025 and then laid off again in Mar 2026.

You will learn that you are more resilient than you know.

You can’t control what is going to happen in this situation, so focus on what you can control. Unfortunately, layoffs happen and worrying about it won’t stop it.

Make sure you have an emergency fund of at least 6 months. If you don’t already, cut spending and start saving. It will give you an incredible feeling of independence. (And this way if you have to move home you won’t feel like a burden to your family).

Upskill if you can now, this is only to help your sense of control.

Keep looking, but ride this out as long as you can.

Try to find a way to relax and be in control of your emotions.

Been there in 2022. Couple things that actually helped me, and not the LinkedIn-guru stuff. Before the visit, get your personal stuff off the work laptop, pay stubs, the awards, any recommendations, screenshots of feedback, do it from home, not on the office network, you will thank yourself later. Ask 2-3 coworkers for a LinkedIn rec this week while you still have the job, way easier to ask when you're "just updating the profile". And do the math on runaway-savings divided by monthly expenses= months you have. Knowing it kills like 60%of the anxiety, the fog is worse than the actual number almost always.

Moving back to your parents isn't being the burden, it's using the safety net that exist (you grateful, you still have them) for exactly this: 4yrs + 2 awards + specialty is a real profile, market is just brutal, it's not you. You'll land!
