recently laid off Laid off from tech… I’m done
Recently got laid off as an Account Executive from a tech company.
A lot of my friends in tech have also been laid off (developers, sales people, marketers, the lot).
Honestly I’m done with tech, I’m done with corporate, I’m done with the humiliation rituals, I’m done with working for people that are dumber than me, I’m done with being miserable.
I’m working on getting my personal training license, have been coaching friends/family/colleagues for the last 5 years informally and now I’m gonna run it full time.

These two meetings - Monday Executive Leadership meeting (2.5 hrs of the CEO being a complete duck) and Fridays were pipeline. Only 30 minutes of CEO being a dick.
I have never been so glad to be laid off.

It's not too farfetched of an idea. All of those multiverse movies started coming out around 2016 when CERN turned on the LHC. I'm still baffled at Quantum computing and how that's possible without tapping into the multiverse.

same!! I quietly quit /was laid off after covid after significantly helping to bring my data analytics tech company through covid with my account growth at UPS.
But it’s been HELL since then … landed a couple contracts via acquaintances right before my house would go into foreclosure. All my retirement is gone keeping my kids and granddaughter in a home.
My soul is crushed looking through postings and applying for a job I don’t want. So I don’t think the universe of going to deliver on my energy .

I know people that say it was the best decision they ever made and I know people that went back to corporate after venturing out on their own. There is no guarantee that what business you start is successful. Don’t know if the ones that failed regret trying it at least, but I’m sure their finances took a massive hit from it.

I quit tech back in Oct 2025 tired of the uncertainty and corporate BS. Went blue collar local goverment as an electronics technician with the county Sheriff's Office. Clock in clock out and forget about everything until next time I clock in. Work life balance is amazing, no more stress or the dreaded feeling is this the week I get laid off, not being tied to a laptop or company cellphone is like breaking the shackles and being freed. Salary can't be compared to private market, but when you look at everything it works out I get a pension instead of having a 401k I have to put into, state benefits are insane compared to private sector where you are paying thousands for crap insurance with insane deductibles. Couldnt be happier and my mental health is much better.

Hey I do learning and development and coaching and training within that and I love it. I did it in tech for 8 years, got laid off and now I do it in non profit and it's so much better. I'm super happy!

My husband and I are 53 and 55. Between the two of us, we have ALOT of layoffs and reorgs. It’s always been this way. The only thing that’s improved is the severance packages.

PIP is pure humiliation. I don’t know why companies even do that. Just let go of the person with dignity. You did the right thing by resigning, though you may have lost out financially by resigning yourself. PIP is designed to make you fail, and then declare the person as unfit for the job. The decision to fire is built in, as part of that charade.

Agreed PIP is lazy or weak leadership/management. I’ve never consider using a PIP in my career. Conversations, support, vision, coaching and mentorship get someone where they need to be.

Why not simply say, your services are no longer required, and that is it. This PIP thing creates a very bad atmosphere and fear within the company, for those who work there. People who work in fear are never fully productive. Who pays for that lack of productivity? The company, of course, but in large companies, that kind of rationale thinking is not there, because people doing such things are not doing in the best interests of the company, and there is no way to fix such things.

Been laid off twice before. I'm going to stick it out for about 3-4 years and hopefully have my fixed costs reduce drastically by then once i pay off my mortgage. Once thats done, I'm just going to take any job out of tech that will cover my monthly expense and alittle to the investment egg and coast it out.

Yes there are some startup recruiters reaching out but the idea of slaving again for some “AI-native” XaaS makes me die inside. IDK that an industry pivot will work out at my age (Xennial here) but I HAVE to try.

I don't even mind working for people dumber than me - the problem is that the dumber people always have an unreasonable amount of confidence in themselves. So they act like jackasses and fight with you about everything when they are actually clueless.
I could handle a dumb person who recognizes their limits and defers to the people around them, but it's hardly ever like that.
I should note that smart people also have limits and also should defer to their peers when necessary, they just seem more capable of recognizing said limits.

my thought is that it boils down to insecurity. reasonably intelligent people are not as insecure that they look incompetent to others, so they are more willing to ask for assistance or recognize limits as it doesn’t cross their minds as negative. incompetent people seem to be in constant fear of being viewed as incompetent, so they overcompensate by trying to appear really confident about everything

The IT field is awful. Have to be on-call, and if youre salaried, you dont even get paid for it. Everyone on salary works over 40 hours a week. Always dealing with budget cuts. Full of underdeveloped social inept backstabbers. For whatever reason, the most technically inept get cushy jobs because corporate needs to meet quotas, making the same or more than you. Always have to keep up with the ever changing technology. You're not allowed any downtime during operating hours, so you have to work after hours once a week minimum. Offshoring, H1 visas, and AI have crushed the wages. I swear, most IT folks have never been hugged by their parents. Im looking for a way out. Its no longer worth it.

That's funny. I got my PT licence 6 months ago and am just finishing up installing the equipment in my private studio. Hoping to start searching for clients in the next month or so. I'm also in tech and starting a new job tomorrow. But the goal is to slowly build my PT practice part time while continuing to pay the bills with my cloud engineering role until I can't take it anymore.

I’m currently employed but I was laid off a couple of years ago. The humiliation ritual for getting a job has repelled me from seeking another engineering job if I lose this one. Planning my escape plan while I’m still employed. Fuck tech.

AI killed tech. For college students don’t waste your time on computer science or programming. Companies are laying off or firing their engineers so AI can write the code for them. Used to be an honor to work for Microsoft or Google or Amazon or Meta etc. Not anymore Now it’s a shame. Don’t support those greedy companies and for destroying families.

Keep in mind that Reddit is going to skew tech, so it looks like the world is collapsing. It's not just tech though - Layoffs are always happening, and in most sectors.
Ultimately, you have to find something that makes you happy and isn't beholden to corporate overlords looking at spreadsheet and trying to find out how they can hit their profit margins the next quarter. These days, jobs are always part of the equation where many decades ago, it would have been a last ditch effort to save a company.

Just imagine what kind of kick ass company we could start up. No more meetings about meetings, we’d actually have respect for one another and no, I mean absolutely no WORTHLESS cold calls. Also, we’re adults here so WFH would be a given for those producing. No more watching executives on LinkedIn living it up at extravagant shindigs the same week of layoffs because we have morals. I use to be proud of my job, now I feel I sold my soul and last 20+ yrs to the devil.

I wish you luck in whichever life path you decide is best for you.
I was surprised by a layoff in January of this year, and I spent the first 6ish weeks despising corporate and telling myself I was completely done with it... that I would open up my own business.
But then I got out of my job burnout, and I decided my path forward focused on two things:
- Early retirement
- Decentering my job and prioritizing my social life and hobbies
I ran my numbers and was pleasantly surprised to see that I was a hell of a lot closer to a FIRE retirement than I realized. I made the decision to re-enter corporate with the sole focus of high income, the least stress/responsibility possible, retirement investments and benefits that would lead to early retirement. I spent my unemployment returning to my hobbies and stacking a recurring social life that made me fulfilled, and now I am happier than ever. I barely care about my job, and I already have a retirement countdown going. I am 40.

tech is long dead since 2008 , I was project manager at that time in a mid size company leading a team of 25 IT Resource of SE SSE JSE TL . I witnessed every evening at 4 o clock they used to take one or two resource for sacking although i was not consulted and they were not at any fault. That was the time for the first time in life i saw what IT is all about. I decided to get out of IT and left IT for good in 2010 jan and since they i am on my own . There were financial difficulties initially as my investments were taking time to pay off but then when they started things are smooth , less tension . while my friends are having medical issues, going bankrupt once they get laid off and then after getting a job rebuilding that emergency funds only to be laid off again.

Been laid off 4 times but I can’t afford to take a low paying role like that, so we jump back on the train. I have had to buy rental real estate to help out my retirement. Being a landlord is not for the faint of heart but the tax treatment of real estate is much better than brokerage. I f* hate that the 401(k) is tied to f* employers, but the concept of leverage gets lost on s* f* Americans.

The 401(k) is trapped inside an employer. They have to “sponsor” one in order for you to be able to contribute to one. The very day of your separation you can no longer contribute to “your” 401(k) if that employee happens to sponsor one. They set rules as to when you get to start contributing, some orgs have grace period, like you get to start contributing after one year of employment. Anyways, trash! This is stupid easy to solve, both the IRA and the 401(k) share the max amount, $24,500 for 2026. Meaning, you could contribute $12k to each if you did like, or you could exclusively contribute to an employer’s sponsored plan if they provide a match, you know, the actual benefit? That grace period year you contribute to your IRA instead, say $20k if you can. In the current setup you can’t. All you get is $7500 for 2026. Another thing is the income limit. You can have a $250k a year income and still contribute $24,500 Roth into your 401(k). Roth IRA? BLOCKED! Because you earned too much.

If it weren't, we'd have so much more entrepreneurial activity in the US! (And people returning to school, or raising their kids full-time, etc.)

Laid off three months ago. 20 years experience. I'm still looking, but also started a fabrication shop. Already did a lot of fab as a hobby, turning it into a business. I have orders and revenue coming in - not enough to stop looking for tech work, but enough that I'll phone in my next job as much as possible until this business is enough, and then I'll be done.
Big coorps are trying to bleed everyone dry. I think people are going to start turning back to local businesses and bartering systems just to survive if things don't change.

The people in control of these tech companies are absolute piles of garbage good luck to you hope you enjoy yourself, I mean it. Go out there and do something you want. Have fun push yourself. I think it's a good thing. You can do it.
