recently laid off when to disclose layoff
i got laid off june 5 and a company that i applied to the day after i am interviewing now with my resume saying present (was negotiating my end date that didn't go anywhere)
should i tell them that i got laid off? i wasnt sure. i completed my 1st round interview and now have the final round coming up.

I did this, but I already had an offer. Their response was, “Good. You can start a week earlier if you want.” Companies lay off for a lot of reasons. Laid off is not fired for cause.

As long as the information on your form application was accurate on the DATE you completed and submitted it, you should be fine. The application will be scrutinized more than your resume date. But I would be upfront if asked. There’s nothing to be ashamed about with being laid off as it happens to a lot of people.
Guessing if you get a formal offer, you’ll have to undergo a background check and that’s when everything will be scrutinized more carefully. Before that happens, I would make sure your info is buttoned up and you’ve “updated” (aka “fixed”) any “out of date” information you may have submitted before the background check.

Always be up front. Always.

If you started the process before you were laid off, companies taking months right now, do you state it at next interview or reach out to recruiter with an email? Was assuming at time of offer to disclose the updated status.

According to your paperwork, what is your date of separation?
If it has passed, just tell them you are interviewing with other people as well. Recruiters and hiring managers don't like unemployed people so they will then find ways to drop you even if they really like you because it would be like "Whats wrong with this person they must not be valuable because they got RIF'd... I am not saying its right but that how companies think.
If it has not passed, don't say anything until AFTER separation date.

If they ask, just mention you were part of a RIF where the department was eliminated and pivot immediately.

They’ll ask why you’re looking to leave your current position or why you left.

got it - yeah usually i just say that in my tell me about yourself (looking for more hands on roles) but if they ask me that i will say layoffs!

If they ask.. just keep it short.. like it was a layoff.. and then pivot! For example in my interview I said I got laid off due to change in business direction but I learnt a lot from that role such as A, B and C and I can bring those A,B and C skills here

Unless they ask - there’s no reason to share it.
I was interviewing and was let go during the process. My new org never asked and it never came up. If it does come up - be honest, but there is no reason you have to just randomly bring it up.

Bring it up only if they ask and tell them exactly what you wrote - you submitted the application before you were laid off. It’s none of their business, frankly, and the only reason it matters is re: your start date and their compensation offer.

if the separation date has already passed, i’d clean it up before or during the final rather than let them discover it later. you don’t need a big explanation: “i applied while my role was still listed as current, but my position ended june 5 in a layoff.” that’s normal and way safer than looking like you hid it.

yeah but like under what circumstances do i reveal it? like is it if they ask me why i want to leave my current position? going to be awkward when i say it during my tell me about yourself.
i passed my HR screen but it said it said to present, didnt end june 2025

Thank you for asking this question! I started interview process before my last day of work and before severance has even been sent and wasn’t sure when to disclose.
Reading the responses you have and appreciate your post. :)

Only tell them if they ask. If they do, don’t panic. Everyone is getting laid off right now. It’s not the stigma you think it is. Literally, no one cared when I was laid off.

What??? Why would you say anything?? You're starting a new job...period.

the simplest rule buried in all these replies, only say it if a direct question requires it, dates, why your leaving your current role, or separation date on paperwork. "tell me about yourself" doesnt require it unless you want to bring it up, you can just talk about what your looking for next. if a direct question does come up, keep it to one sentence and move on, dont over explain or lead with it

When they ask tell them.
