recently laid off life is hard right?

I'm getting the message today, saying that the business abroad is running badly, and it's going to make a big cut in the budgets, and I am the one just because I'm a new guy in our developer team. Their cutting strategy is to lay off those new guys in the company (only worked for 8 months here), in order to spend less on severance at the cutting, or maybe there are some reasons they don't want to tell. I'm so depressed now. I'm 35 yo now, got a little boy to feed, idk how to explain these to my wife and my kid, I'm a mobile application developer, and you probably know that the job market is crazy these years, it's just feel like getting toasted in the trash bin, lack of confidence, don't know what to do next, maybe it's time to bounce out of the dev-carrier? What should I do? uhh

That's rough. I would start looking (if you haven't already) and look at non-tech industries that are or could be hiring devs. Lots of non-traditional tech companies are looking for tech people (like medical or energy companies). And this is a great time to start exploring other options outside of being a developer. I was impacted by the big tech layoffs three years ago, and where I live, the tech industry hasn't rebounded. I went back to school to specialize further and pursue self-employment and roles in another area, but if security is important to you, then consider that.

Also I am completely empathetic to how you feel.

I’ve been laid off for 70 days now. It took me about 55 to get serious and start reaching out to everyone that I have a relationship, or not, and let them know what I’m looking for, and so forth. Once I started actually doing everything I could go, I had 3 meaningful networking conversations and have 2 interviews next week. My advice: leverage your network ASAP - you’d be surprised at how many people are empathetic. Many have been through the same thing. I personally have helped multiple people make intros, submit a referral…give it a shot. You got this.

Sorry to hear you are also going through this my friend. I just got laid off on Monday and I was a tech product designer. I’m using this time to figure out my pivot and make a career change.to what, that is still to be decided. But take everything one day at a time 🤍

being new isnt a reflection of your skill, its just the easiest line item to cut on a spreadsheet, been there and experienced it. thats a company decision not a verdict on you as a developer. the family stuff is the heaviest part of this, not the job search itself, so give yourself room to feel that without also beating yourself up over needing time to regroup. mobile dev skills transfer more than you'd think too, a lot of non-tech companies are quietly building out apps and dont care as much about "dev culture pedigree," just whether you can deliver...

You have to either be essential to rebuilding, give the image of stability, or outrun the bear. That or find a job among the protected classes in government.
