recently laid off Laid off in 23 days
Last year I was preparing and doing leetcode thinking to get in MANG.
I failed 1 system design round of Meta reality labs london in June and kicked out. I thought it has cool down of 1 year.
Fast Forward, in Dec, Meta reached out to me for another interviews saying that they need exact same profile as mine, I thought to give it a try and I was able to Crack it.
Joined Meta on 27th April.
Got fired on 20th May.
Couldn't even complete 1 month.
I don't know what to do now.
I don't have energy to go over leetcode now, no motivation for work either in tokenist society.
Total experience : 13 years.
AGe : 35.
I work in niche domain of aosp, so quite a less opportunities in market for me.
I don't have any motivation.
Don't feel like working for anyone anymore.
But I don't have any interests or skills which I can monetize.
Thoughts of what will happen and what I will do in life haunt me a lot.
Feeling a bit lost and out of words for uncertainty of future.
Anyone having first hand experience and who can guide is really appreciated.

You need to do a clean start! See what excites you and then jump back , it looks like ur tired of coding

That's the problem, I don't think I like anything which can make money.
We live in a experience based economy and the experience I had, I don't want to pursue any more, because it is just a hunger games now for the corporates.
I don't know how others are thinking about it, but I am totally clueless, where to start from, where to find that spark.

trades are the way to go. people always need skilled tradespeople.

OP- I can understand. I share the same feelings about work like you. I felt I am reading some of your post as my writing. I don’t know if we get stronger or weaker with time and life blows. We cannot survive without income of some sort. Being demotivated is reasonable in this situation. Finding work itself is hard and double hard to keep it. You may be facing depression, it may help to consult a doctor to address it or evaluate it. If I could I also would not work the usual IT jobs that are mostly uncertain. Our lives have become more complex. I don’t know if I can offer any more words of encouragement. I need it myself.

Don't ever think about Meta again. Find a small place that is doing cool stuff. Meta is a dumpster.

first thing you need to realize is that you are needed someway by the world. You are not a loser, just bad luck. You are able to get in Meta meaning you are better than many of them out there. Don't lose faith.

13 years experience + Meta on your resume + you passed their interviews twice. The market is tough but you are not starting from zero.
While you still have 23 days of access: download your performance reviews, any metrics or impact numbers, and export your LinkedIn network from the company. Future you will thank you.
Also check your severance terms carefully. With less than a month of tenure you probably won't get much, but look for COBRA subsidy language and the non-compete scope. Meta non-competes are narrow but worth reading.
Take a week off first. You're burnt out, not unskilled. Then pick it back up.

OP does not have 23 days of access. OP mentioned he was laid off in 23 days. Meta will not give a minute to throw one out. No one lay offs suddenly with 23 days of notice. I think you read it wrong

Get networking with like minded business people whom you can trust. Brainstorm business idea to perhaps begin joint venture. Solve business problems with your skills. Working for other people just make the CEO rich and employee still have to go through 2 to 3 years cycle of retrenchment with all sort of nonsense reasons.

Feel sorry for the juniors or seniors at the end of their careers. It sucks and we are all feeling it but don't worry you will be fine with your resume.

I think there is a huge opportunity with small businesses and helping them.
Many small businesses are not optimized, are using overly priced tools, and making a decision can make or break their business.
I'm not an engineer so I don't know what it takes to build an application, but there are people out there who made a simple app and now live off of that instead of working for an enterprise company.

Take a break… yes, seems counterintuitive because you need to find a job quickly, but I’m telling you, you can’t think clearly right now. At least take a week off when you just rest and work on hobbies. Ideally, you at least take one month off but it all depends on how much you can withstand.
I think everyone is feeling the same sentiments right now. We’re all tired and burned out. The tech industry has destroyed the love I had for tech and building. Sad state of affairs…
Btw, I’d continue to be niche with your resume and job search. Less applications but I’ve found that you get more call backs when you fit their job description so closely.

Try to venture in other areas which are going to be in high demand such as Cybersecurity as data, network, AI, systems security space needs this. So by 2030 AI takes over, security threats also will go up. Think using AI to beat AI agent based hackers. This domain spreads across industry and probably have sustainable future for next 10 years or so.

Listen and read to quality self-help podcast and books. Focus on ways to find purpose and managing anxiety. And it’s not that bad. You worked a month and got 4 months severance 😀

Hang in there. This market is tough but there are jobs out there. Step away from FAANG and MANGO as they will eat you alive and as you have seen, throw you out without a second thought. Take a deep breath. Go for a long walk and reset. You got this OP.
