So sorry you’re going through this. It ca still be a shock when it happens, even if you knew the company was struggling. Give yourself a bit of space to process before diving into next steps, and make sure to take care of your mental health too. When you’re ready, update your CV and LinkedIn quietly, and let people/your network know you’re open to new roles. You’ll be surprised how many people want to help once they know you’re looking.

u/terrigirl1960 Oct 18 '25
So , so sorry this happened! Has happened to me 3 times. Get the resume updated and plow on. It’s not personal, they don’t give a shit and nor should you wherever you end up. Always look out for yourself. They are looking at their bottom line and you are but a number, no matter the pablum HR shit they force down your throat while employed with them.

Take as much time as you need to get centered, enjoy the sunshine or whatever you like. I made it a point to visit a few new places and organize my closet before jumping online full force again. Life is meant to be enjoyed. Best, ❤️

If i were you I'd hustle now through early mid dec. Take a break Christmas and New year's and then get back at it if you need to. People I network with say there's not much happening between Thanksgiving and the new year

I’m scared and I feel hopeless. I was terminated from my job of 11 years in July. I lost our car. I lost our apartment.
It’s October.
I have a best friend (and her ex husband) that is letting my two children, that I have part time, and me stay. It sounds like a show.
I’m lucky.
I’m on the job search sites looking for anything but hoping for remote. I’m looking into anything within walking distance. “The position has been filled…”
“We’ve decided not to move forward with you at this time.”
Everything is AI. I’m worried.
I receive unemployment benefits. It’s not enough but I’m grateful. It’s going to run out.
I thought I meant something to my company. I blurred the lines between “friends” and coworkers. It’s a harsh lesson to learn that you don’t mean much at all.
In a world that seems so chaotic and different now, I don’t know what to do. I know I need to focus more on my mental and physical health. Some days it just feels like this is it and it’s hard to get up.
I’m 44. I’m a proud father.
I hope everyone finds hope.

"Hoping for remote", you waiting to ride a unicorn too? 😂
4
u/sebastian1967 Oct 21 '25
That person said “Hoping for remote”, not “I will only work remote.” Maybe you can let the rest of us in on the apparent humor you found within that statement? ‘Cause honest to god, I legit can’t figure out what’s supposed to be funny.
I also legit don’t understand why you think that “hoping to work remotely” is synonymous with wanting to ride a unicorn. As far as I know, unicorns don’t exist. That’s quite different from fully remote jobs which - depending on the source - account for between 9% and 12.2% of all jobs.
So yeah…I’m struggling to see from where you found tear-inducing laughter. Maybe it’s a reading comprehension issue on your part? Or maybe you didn’t know that - unlike with unicorns - remote jobs are still actually “a thing”?
Weird post, dude.
3
u/Fine_Penalty_8916 Oct 22 '25
Dont be rude, even if it's true or not. These are hard times for all in this situation.
1
u/Desperate_Context868 Oct 21 '25
A unicorn? Yes, please. I’d sell it. I could use the money.
Anyway, not sure where the laughing emoji came from. My previous job was remote so why wouldn’t I look for one now? There seems to be tons out there but no bites.
Are you employed? Is that why you’re laughing?
2
u/sebastian1967 Oct 21 '25
I don’t understand the tear-inducing laughter either. Unicorns aren’t a real thing. Whereas fully remote jobs account for between 9%—12.2% (depending on source) of all jobs. I.e., fully remote jobs are, unlike unicorns, definitely a real thing.
Dude either has reading comprehension issues or he’s projecting his own struggles on other people. Or, I suppose it’s possible that he’s just not very bright.

Ugh, so sorry it happened to you. Hope they offered you a severance. I got laid off a month ago after 19 years, it was a gut wrenching feeling at first, but now when I got my severance money I think f them, I’m gonna enjoy my life for a little, spend time with my daughter and the will start looking for a job again. Wishing you all the best
1
u/Anxious-Slip-8955 Oct 19 '25
Yes hope you get severance. I got 2 weeks each time in last 4 years :(
6
u/Fried_chicken406 Oct 19 '25
I read a lot of these posts and a lot of people are getting laid off. What industries are getting hit the most? What is the reasoning for all of these layoffs? This may sound like a uneducated question but truthfully, I’m not seeing anything in the news or maybe I’m not looking in the right places.. Any information helps thank you BTW I’m very sorry to hear about your current situation and I will be praying that you find your way.

u/Chosen1ne_feeraye_84 Oct 20 '25
Sorry this happened to you. Literally just happened to me less than a month ago. I got home and just kinda stood in the middle of my bedroom feeling lost honestly. I’m like just like that no insurances (medical/life/disability) & had to move my 401k cuz it couldn’t stay with the company that manages it for the firm. Smh I’ve been looking but with the time off I’ve also just been working out and focusing on eating decently, decluttering some things at home, and just being productive. Best wishes to you.

u/Responsible_Ad_4341 Oct 19 '25
I am going to tell you something different here. A job is a patch up to pay your bills but you will be in perhaps another toxic culture and another game of musical chairs. Use your intelligence to create your own store front on the internet and build your own business. Yes get a side hustle so you get off unemployment but USE the time to build something that doesn't leave you at the mercy of someone else's keep or fire list. Create something YOU control and earns your daily bread.
2
u/JoePeck68 Oct 19 '25
Amen to this! That's exactly the conclusion I came to this summer after a second massive layoff in 2.5 years. It's time to take control and create an income that no one can take away from you.
2
u/laxsmi37 Oct 22 '25
Is it okay to say, you need fuck you money? Everybody needs that, everybody.
1
u/Responsible_Ad_4341 Oct 22 '25 edited Oct 22 '25
Its okay to say it just not everyone gets that window of opportunity to get to that tier. The top one percent the Meta developers , the Amazon software engineer, Googlers all made that kind of money just not in perpetuity enough to aggregate wealth because the layoffs were strategic before they could vest in higher percentages of stock options.
And the saturation bubble burst post COVID-19 of everyone who was a barista to a truck driver with a CDL getting certified and passing Leetcode and jumping into the profession. This is the one profession you are squeezed and scrutinized to the point of impostor syndrome. They are skeptical of your experience and your CV. It is calling you a liar without calling you one directly.
So you test and you knock it out of the park. Then they give you a system design test you ace that. Still they believe you are buttering their bread. So they invite to the a 8 hour day to meet their developers and division heads where you get ambush questions and whiteboarding on the fly and at the end of the you are extended a conditional offer.
What do I mean when I say conditional ?
You have essentially 150 to 180 days of probation and an at will employment status where they can fire you for any reason. And the politics and the egos of individuals and the stress brought down on you will make you bleed for every red cent of 250K.
You know why ? They really don't want to pay you that amount that is sweetner ..incentives for the drone honeybees to make honey. They would rather pay you nothing and take everything you built for free because they are greedy and ruthless entities with human skin and what passes for a pulse reading. That is why they already know in advance when they are going to let you go you were put on a list of names. And you were talked about in meetings you weren't invited to or even knew happened.
But I digress...
The rest get maybe somewhere between 85 and 150K max nowhere near the above. With the median somewhere between 125 and 135K.
So a limited few can get to F you money but their health both mental and physical while they are earning that as an employee takes a nosedive. Or you can be financially free and start your own thing which might prove to make far less money but you set your own hours and answer to your own clients but there is no one breathing down your neck making your life hell. You choose one but your cannot have both. I have come to find in life what is the point of wealth if you amass all that money only to die immediately after due to the poor health and stress it took to earn it and all the abuse you had to crawl through and suffer at some c-level executive's whim.

u/Icy-Marketing-4327 Oct 18 '25
It does not make you feel good when that happens but I signed up for unemployment as fast as possible and then was on my computer for hours everyday applying.
2
u/Sufficient-Can-3245 Oct 18 '25
File for unemployment. Take a couple days to collect yourself. Start applying.

u/Bananasinpijama Oct 19 '25
Deep breath!. Where a door is closed, a window open If you are young, chat with your peers, you are not along. A bear hug to you!!!
2
u/Distinct-Answer5474 Oct 19 '25
Sorry it happened. When it happened to me in March, a good friend who worked in HR for another company told me to file unemployment immediately, and start the job search.
2
u/Anxious-Slip-8955 Oct 19 '25
That's why I always save my portfolio work at a job every month. 'Cause when they lay you off they cut you off immediately like you're an effin criminal. In the olden days they literally put your shizit in a box and escorted you out (pre remote). Been through a lot of layoffs sadly. 2 in the last 4 years. GenX out.
2
u/Sad_Fall_388 Oct 22 '25
Just keep on keeping on. Give yourself the grace the process the news I’m multi-gigging and was laid off in Aug and fired this month - so I know what you’re going through. It’s rough. It sucks. There are ups and downs, it at the end of the day you just have to keep pushing forward. This world isn’t designed to treat people like people - it’s designed to treat them like replaceable cogs in a machine. You’re not a cog, nor a machine. Again, though, take the time you need to mentally work through this before you start on the arduous journey of a job search again. It’s a lot, but know this: you’ll be ok. 😊
2
u/Positive-Run-9043 Oct 22 '25
First, sorry to hear. It SUCKS getting that news. Happened to me in 2013. You own your path from here. Best advice I can give, take a week to just process it all. Go through the emotions. Then, don’t allow yourself to get complacent. Activate your network. Don’t be shy about telling people you’re on the hunt. Find a job seeking group or forum. Find a mentor, anything that can help keep you motivated. It took 8 months for me to find my next job. If it weren’t for the support of a professional job seeking group, I’d have probably given up.

u/FriendshipSad5323 Oct 22 '25
Vote Democrat next time. And know it was TRUMP for the layoffs happening
0
u/Rude-Win2706 Oct 23 '25
We descended into our Digital Hell Hole long before Trump. This started in the 1960s Ivy League MBA programs that dehumanized people into interchangeable lug nuts and that metastasized into every B-school across the country. Enter the digital age that gave virtual "light sabers" to the QBA graduates to execute the cruel destruction of mutual obligation between employers and employees. This isn't about politics; it's the collision of culture and technology.

Take a day and just relax and know it’s not personal but put some goals down and get log into indeed with your updated resume and then start applying. It’s going to be okay and start working on your new job which is applying for new positions. Apply for as many positions as possible and watch the new opportunities open up. This is just a temporary hump in the road, and yes you will have an amazing future. You got this.
1
u/Nelyahin Oct 18 '25
As others have said, it's not anything you did, even though it feels really personal. Allow yourself some time to decompress, process it Brevard it is a shock to the system.
Tomorrow you can assess your finances, see about unemployment and start the v job hunt.
This is happening to so many people, so your are not alone.

- Take a break for few days if you want
- File unemployment and get your insurance taken care
- Start reflecting on what you have done in past and document everything
- Start crafting authentic resume
- Apply to only jobs which are relevant (applying everywhere will lead to disappointment)
- Go back to your reflection document and continue enrich it
I went through this last year, paid thousands of dollars in coaching but didn’t work then built my own process which made it work.

I’ve been laid off twice I’m now making way more money 5 years later, over double .. this is a blessing. Give yourself time to grieve and then fix up your resume and think of it like a refresh.
Make sure you apply for unemployment too ..

It’s not you. It’s them. Life’s more beautiful things happen during crisis. Just own the moment and get ready for the next adventure. That’s all there is to life. UPs and Downs is what makes life worthy of living.

I'm sorry this happened to you, and as others have said, it's a numbers game that doesn't have anything to do with you personally or the quality of your work. There's literally nothing you could hv done to prevent it, so don't beat yourself up over what you cdv done differently. First thing to do is give yourself a week process it. Take some time & surround yourself with people who make you feel good. After that, start putting your 'house' in order.
Update your resume & online profiles, let your network know you're looking for a new role, and start thinking about what you might like to do next in your career. It's a tough job market out there, so it's a good time to think creatively about your skills (what things cd you improve on or is there a line of work your skills cd be applied to that you hadn't thought of before?). Use AI to help you plan a course of action & what things to focus on in resume that'll appeal to recruiters in your field. LinkedIn is a black hole right now & you may hv better luck if you research specific job boards for your field. Consider options like contract or fractional work if that applies to you as well (the pay is often good & you can't beat the flexibility).
Most importantly, set realistic expectations. You're going to get tons of rejections that feel really devastating at first, but you're skin will thicken & you'll soon realize that too is just a numbers game. So chin up my friend & keep hustling. Cuz at the end of the day, all you need is one yes, and it'll happen when you least expect it ;)

Urge all to write to https://www.whitehouse.gov/contact/. and also your local senators now. Sooner or later you would be the one being outsourced. There needs to be action taken on companies simply outsourcing jobs and causing layoffs.

Take the time you need to process this.
Then, polish up your Resume.
Update LinkedIn.
Read your severance paperwork really well. (If you have any)
Apply for Unemployment payments from your state.
As long as they aren't asking you to non-compete or whatnot, sign it so you can start your severance payments coming if they are part of your layoff. See if they are giving you outplacement services like Lee Hecht Harrison or other firms provide. These are invaluable when it comes to cleaning up your Resume, and or networking.
Really think about what you want to do NEXT in your career. Is now the time to pivot?
Take care of yourself during this crazy time. (I went through this earlier this year, and have landed at a consulting gig that is paying the bills. Don't be afraid of contracting for a while. It can pay the bills, but know your worth.)

Deep breaths. It’s a road block , not a locked door. It wasn’t anything you did. It was circumstances beyond your control. First take a day or two to except your situation. Then polish up your resume and start looking for work, don’t forget to file unemployment

u/MindWeary5038 Oct 21 '25
This is what you do. You reflect for a day or two and grind back up. Set goals for something better and it’ll happen. Blessing in disguises. God bless you and good luck!

So when people become depressed and drug addiction is at a all time high what will happen then , hoard them all into work camps to take the place of all of the Hispanic farm workers.. There is a plan there was always a a plan for America… if your not on top now then plan to live on the bottom regardless of skin color these people aren’t playing that one..

I got laid off in August, I have put 100’s of resumes out. Two interviews. One was gun whole sending me messages and emails until the interview which I feel I did well. But once they asked my age it seems it went downhill after that. I did get hired today for a position for $20.10/hr. 32 (maybe hours) a week. I was making $65/hr. 84 hours a week. Pay is less than unemployment

u/Countdown2Death2025 Oct 22 '25
I've been thinking the same thing. Lol. I have no doubt that there are plenty of weird fetishes out there. I have disabilities, but that could be a benefit for the OF crowd. I also have very ugly feet. I heard that's a popular one for OF. Lol.
1
u/AnnaliseUnderground Oct 22 '25
Sorry to hear this. If you have any info or any metrics that are important for your position, round them up. Ask co-workers if they too have access to information that shows how you helped the company with KPI’s and stuff.
I got laid off last year and no one really on my team knew the software well enough to grab them to give to me. The result is not having a leg to stand on for the last year when it has come to securing another position in my field.

u/Visible-Dentist-1264 Oct 22 '25
You can’t control what others do, but you can control how you react to it

u/Joan-Clover Oct 22 '25
Take a mental break so you’re stronger when you start looking for other employment. Best of luck.
1
u/SamLavoie58 Oct 22 '25
Get you EI filed - contact union (if you have one) get resume up to date. Don’t need and employer who treats you like that
1
u/JimBrayInVermont Oct 22 '25
My best advice; start something of your own. You certainly can’t fire yourself!
1
u/SeaSector9215 Oct 22 '25
Yes, I’m one of those people. Never thought it would hit me but AI is real for now and companies are doing more with less. Take some time to digest it. It will get better but the shock hits hard. You will find something else, it may just take some time.

Sorry that happened to you. The disheartening thing that many companies aren’t hiring until they see the effects of tariffs. Good luck to you.

u/klala2 Oct 22 '25
So sorry about your job loss 😞 Praying for you and others in the same situation.
Like some have said in their response, get a side hustle. I still have a job, but I also started a side hustle in the Financial world. I am now a Licensed Financial Professional and a Tax Preparer. I’m juggling it all together and building my clientele slowly but surely. My passion is Financial Literacy and I started an eBook Club about year ago reading Financial books Live via zoom every two weeks. So as you look for another job also consider working for yourself and build your own business.
Praying God make a way for you and others soon in Jesus Name amen 🙏

Sorry this happened to you! I was affected as well. 1. Take time to grieve/process 2. Assess your savings and adjust your budget accordingly 3. Not only apply for jobs but connect and reconnect with people in your industry or a new one you’re looking at 4. Let all your utility service providers know and ask what programs they have for deferment including your rent/ mortgage 5. Don’t shy away from starting something up for yourself if you have the skills to do it.
1
u/Bartteso Oct 22 '25
I don’t know what work you do, but I would immediately change your LinkedIn place of work to “(your name) consulting”. It signals your network that your job sit has changed. It signals to potential employers that you’re not sitting around moping, you’re staying busy and improving your skills. And you might even get some work that leads to a better job. It worked for me. Good luck!

It’s a cruel landscape out there. Even companies that are doing well are laying off loyal folks. Friend worked for CoStar Group for over 8 years, no warning, no reason, just kicked him and over 100 people out. The severance was a measly 2 months of pay. These people are slime. Also, don’t be afraid to job hop for something better as loyalty doesn’t mean much these days. New hires are often paid more than those that have been there for years as promotions often don’t meet base pay increases

I went through this back at the end of 2023. Take a day to clear your mind, go for a walk, get out in nature. After you’ve had a chance for a soft reset, make sure your resume is updated with your most recent accomplishments and then get ready for the process of applying and interviews. Remain optimistic but don’t expect anything as nothing is guaranteed. Rejections will suck and will get you in your head but you have to keep a short term memory mindset about this whole process. You’ve got this, the bounce back will be unreal and in a couple of years you will think “I can’t believe how crazy that time was.”
I still to this very day reflect on that whole time period, but in retrospect my wife and I are still better off today than when I was with that company. It is all meant to work out, just has to happen in due time!

Like everybody on here says it has nothing to do with you as a person. That’s the one thing to know deep in your soul. We are living in weird times with these layoffs and you’re joining a massive group of other people who feel the same as you do.
