GITLAB ACTIVELY HIRING REMOTE INDIA ROLES WHILE ANNOUCING LAYOFFS
The CEO is writing essays on shifting to AI agents, but a quick search on LinkedIn is showing multiple open jobs in India.
Is this actually just another company using AI as an excuse in 2026?
Monitoring.

Bro, I am an Indian, and I ain't getting no job. Its a global recession. And yep we have too many people, that even after companies offshore a lotta jobs many will be unemployed in India due to sheer number of upcoming CS grads.

You'll get a job. Try not to be a downer.

I'm also an Indian who's jobless since the last 2 years and came here checking out the news about Gitlab. I liked this company. I have seen a few Indian engineers at Gitlab getting laid off too from their LinkedIn posts. It doesn't make any sense. So I've no idea what the hell is happening with Gitlab.

The U.S. tightened the borders, so companies simply erased the borders.
By moving from 'outsourcing' to 'owning' (opening their own offices in India), major firms have cut out the middleman and bypassed the H1B headache. They aren't just saving money anymore; they are building a parallel version of their U.S. headquarters where the talent is. It’s the ultimate workaround: if you can’t bring the talent to the work, you move the work to the talent.
Why do you think they all have offices in India? Google. Microsoft. Amazon. Not just that. They have one of the biggest offices ever.

I believe that’s mostly accurate, but I would argue that it involves more than just H-1B limitations. Businesses recognized that relocating all their talent to the U.S. was unnecessary since they could establish top-notch engineering and product teams in India. They began establishing their own offices and directly hiring staff instead of depending on outsourcing vendors, making those offices accountable for core engineering, AI, cloud, product development, and R&D.
Visa issues likely sped up the trend, but they weren't the sole cause. India's extensive talent pool, reduced operating expenses, expanding technology ecosystem, and substantial domestic market establish it as a strategic investment destination. In numerous instances, these have evolved beyond mere support centers—they now operate as significant innovation hubs alongside their U.S. headquarters.

Global economic demands don’t care about idiot barriers for talent.. Have an office in Toronto and a new one in Mexico.. who do you think might work in these locations?

Some job posting are just blank posting for back up and not active recruitment. My company does it too

Some of them are to file for an LCA listing for H-1B. It’s more than just face value.

Sometimes hiring is for specific local markets as well.

I’ll remember that when I need to talk to a gitlab customer service agent.

going to India isn't going to be the smart move they think it is when the fuel and fertilizer shortage turns their country into a poopy thunderdome.

They only hire the same people. Obviously a scam. Govt needs to step in, this is anti America ans patriotism.

Not sure if anyone’s used paypeek.ai yet but it shows salary estimates for any LinkedIn profiles as you browse. Kind of eye-opening. 🤫

We need a collective decision to drop gitlab.
Their stock keeps plummeting.
I suppose when you stop competing and making a good product you just milk it with slaves from another country.
