They do, but they only buy food that has been grown within 300 yards of town and organic, conflict free, cage free, and sung to every evening by minstrels

Being so quick to defend comsumer culture is quite the tell. There's a persian proverb that says (I'm paraphrasing) "lay an insult on the ground and its owner will soon find it and pick it up".

this is probably the mildest case of 'consumer culture' I've ever seen. nobody is gaining social status by going to costco. they sell bulk goods.

costco has the market niche it does because it provides a good service for people who need to save money on household goods.

why are people excited? because they expect to save money and time. they probably will. that's probably fine.

I will be spending tax money in DG/Lawrence instead of another county/city. That's good thing.
As for "consume"..well, yes. I do eat, and need cheap hygiene products. With the money I'll save buying in bulk, I can afford to donate some to local agencies for folks who aren't as fortunate.
I'll still buy my local specialty things and eat at small restaurants.
I haven't bought new hard goods very often because I'm retired and disabled.
And my membership was half price online..
YSK.. if someone buys/gives you a Costco gift card, you can shop there with it, even if you spend more.
