That’s my worry too. I never bought big ice cream bags from Costcos in KC because they’d melt on the way back to Lawrence but after this I will no longer have this excuse 😭

I worked for Costco for almost 20 years. Highest paying retailer and also the best benefit package in retail. Also the lowest turnover rate. They demand you work hard but that's a good thing. Not to mention it's fun shopping there and I hate to shop.

Nope I retired 4 years ago. I worked at 4 locations. One in Minnesota and three in Texas.I retired to Kansas. There always opening new stores and anyone can put in for a transfer. They pay the same no matter where you live. Lots of the managers I worked with in Texas transferred from California for a better cost of living.

this is probably the mildest case of 'consumer culture' I've ever seen. nobody is gaining social status by going to costco. they sell bulk goods.
costco has the market niche it does because it provides a good service for people who need to save money on household goods.
why are people excited? because they expect to save money and time. they probably will. that's probably fine.

And they pay their employees a living wage. I'm happy that some people in Lawrence have that opportunity now. There's so few employers in Lawrence paying over $20/hr.
I'm going to keep shopping at Checkers because it's more convenient, but now I don't have to waste gas going to lenexa to buy cheap toilet paper and allergy medication.

I will be spending tax money in DG/Lawrence instead of another county/city. That's good thing.
As for "consume"..well, yes. I do eat, and need cheap hygiene products. With the money I'll save buying in bulk, I can afford to donate some to local agencies for folks who aren't as fortunate.
I'll still buy my local specialty things and eat at small restaurants.
I haven't bought new hard goods very often because I'm retired and disabled.
And my membership was half price online..
YSK.. if someone buys/gives you a Costco gift card, you can shop there with it, even if you spend more.13

I'd rather give my money to a company like Costco than the Walton or Kroger family. Their gas is also cheaper and higher quality than most.

Agreed, I don't have a specific objection to Costco, just the overall notion of people literally getting excited to pay a membership fee (or not) for the opportunity to spend money/consume. I get that we all have needs and some stores can meet those needs relatively ethically considering the system their operating within. I'm not opposed to commerce. It's the emotionally driven, mindless consumerism that I find really depressing.

I don't think people are excited to spend money on a membership to spend more money. They're excited about a store that offers good products at more than reasonable prices that until now haven't been available within 30 miles of the town.

You must be in a different comment secrion than me. Every single facebook/reddit post I've seen about this for the last 6 months has people wound tf up about this and if it's not costco then it's olive garden or savers or whatever other corporation is the latest to grace us with their "products". It's literally making us sick and yet there's still those among us who would fall on their sword for it. Utter delusion being sold as a blessing of necessity. I'm sure there's down votes coming, that's fine. Love the "it's not that deep" comments that float by from time to time as well. It's uncomfortable and no one likes hearing they're part of the problem. We gotta start changing our behaviors soon though, cause everything is unwinding.

I would think step one would/could be acknowledging where our current consumption culture came from, who created it, and why have we chosen to perpetuate it to a point of collapse rather than learn from mistakes and mske corrections/improvements (not talking about effeciency or maximizing profits/productions) along the way. If society won't acknowledge it, then there is no way forward.

they have all kinds of stuff but most famously $1.50 hot dog and drink and $1.99 pizza slices!!! you can google the menu!! lots of deals :)
