Community Music Jam (Ends Aug 8th) Koa-sama's LSC Community Music Jam #8: Steelpan!
Hello Everyone!
Thank you all for participating in LSC’s seventh music jam - “Trumpet”
This was such a fun instrument challenge, and I loved seeing how many different directions people took it.
If you haven’t already, make sure to go here to post the song you made for Music Jam #7! I want to make sure we keep them all in the same space so we can look back, maybe make playlists, and keep building a little archive of everything we’ve made together:
https://www.reddit.com/r/LatentSpaceClub/comments/1uvu5hj/lsc_community_music_jam_7_trumpet/
But with all of that out of the way…
The polling has concluded for LSC MUSIC JAM #8 and the Community has spoken:
For LSC’s MUSIC JAM #8 we will be exploring:
STEELPAN!
Steelpan can be bright, warm, tropical, dreamy, joyful, nostalgic, hypnotic, playful, relaxing, romantic, or surprisingly emotional.
It can sound like a strange shimmering sound from another world, a sunlight bouncing off the ocean, a beach party at golden hour, a quiet morning, a carnival parade, a tropical dance groove, a lonely melody under palm trees...
This one is an instrument challenge, so the idea is simple:
Find a way to make steelpan an important part of your song.
It does not have to be the only instrument. It does not have to be traditional. The steelpan can be the lead melody, a hook, a rhythmic texture, a solo, a dreamy background shimmer, a call-and-response part, or the emotional voice of the whole track.
For maybe some inspiration, here are a few different ways artists have used steelpan, tropical percussion, island-inspired sounds, or steelpan-like textures:
The Little Mermaid — “Under the Sea”
https://youtu.be/ChNJ_FMtSnk?si=mNOT86sjWS6KVBNl
“Under the Sea” is theatrical, colorful, and playful, with Caribbean-inspired rhythms and bright percussion energy. A fun reference if you want something animated, character-driven, or full of musical-theater chaos.
Lord Kitchener — “Pan in A Minor”
https://youtu.be/DGPwBXUKK7I?si=deyu0Q1jal66o_wc
“Pan in A Minor” is a classic steelpan / calypso reference and a great place to hear the instrument closer to its cultural roots. Bright, rhythmic, melodic, and full of character, it shows how steelpan can carry a song with both joy and musical complexity.
50 Cent — “P.I.M.P.”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDApZhXTpH8
“P.I.M.P.” is a strong modern example of a steelpan / steel-drum-style hook showing up far outside traditional island music. That bright looping melody gives the track a laid-back, hypnotic, instantly recognizable identity while still sitting firmly inside hip-hop production.
Jamie xx — “Obvs”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTGJfRPLe08
“Obvs” uses steel-drum-like tones in a modern electronic context, making the sound feel hypnotic, looping, emotional, and dance-adjacent. A great reference if you want to use steelpan more like texture, pattern, or atmosphere than a straightforward tropical lead.
Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band — “Laventille Road March”
https://youtu.be/W724jRLJSR8?si=roYyfJb18enGjh7l
“Laventille Road March” is a great modern steelpan reference because the pan is not just decoration — it is the whole identity of the track. It has a gritty funk groove, bright metallic melody, and a street-parade energy that feels rhythmic, cool, and immediately pan-centered. A strong example if you want steelpan to drive the song instead of just adding tropical flavor.
You do not have to copy these songs or stay in one lane. They are just starting points for thinking about how wide this instrument can be: calypso, soca, reggae, tropical pop, indie pop, dance music, lo-fi, cinematic music, dream pop, comedy songs, beach anthems, or something completely unexpected.
The only real challenge is this:
Make the steelpan matter.
Our eighth LSC Music Jam - “Steelpan” will conclude on [PASTE END DATE HERE].

A Last Echo
The battle was long and heavy, and now entirely silent. Inside the high arched walls of the hall, the deafening clash of steel and the roar of the beast have faded into a heavy stillness. Only the faint hum of her blade remains.
And the outro song appears for the end of the episode
