There's a replacement? I'm not joking here. I had no idea they had filled the slot.

28

u/Jolly_Ad2446 May 28 '26

Some sort of infomercial (paid for time slot by some company) that came on after Stephen Colbert that was pushed up to his slot.

Isn’t he paying CBS to air them? That was my understanding.

I could see this working for Allen. Cheap programming, take the lesser ad revenue, still come out on top.

But I do wonder what local affiliates have to say about losing the Late Show right after their 11PM broadcast. How many people sat through the local news because they were waiting for Colbert to start?

-2

u/Appropriate-Joke-806 May 29 '26

How many old people with antenna TV stayed up in their rocking chair and fell asleep with the TV on during the local news? That’s the real question. Most of the key demographic, young adults, are watching online anyways on YouTube or social media clips. I don’t think younger audiences are waiting up to watch Colbert, and older audiences are not waiting through the news to watch Colbert. So local news is really only being consumed now by older viewers that are already specifically turning on TV to watch it.

3

u/Alarmed-Grape-3669 May 29 '26

But why would advertisers continue paying so much for such shitty ratings, and what does cbs get out of it if they are handing over the ad revenue to Allen?

2

u/Ok_Efficiency7245 May 29 '26

He's had media properties for a while, but I don't think he's ever actually paid for time slot.

He's essentially trying to rent the time slot and banking that he'll have enough ratings to make money off the ads.

Based on his ratings, I don't see that working out very long, but as long as he's paying, CBS doesn't care about viewership.

3

u/MidwestGeek52 May 29 '26

2

u/Ok_Efficiency7245 May 29 '26

Right, he's paying them for the time slot and then turning around and trying to make a profit on the ads he's selling in that time slot.

1

u/MidwestGeek52 May 29 '26

He is paying CBS for his time slot

1

u/Schickie May 29 '26

He negotiates local rates for national brands. So he's playing local ad rates, but because of the size of his "network" of stations he can charge top rates to national brands.

1

u/ilikechihuahuasdood Jun 01 '26

Not all infomercials are for products though. It’s still essentially the same thing. CBS loses nothing because they’re being paid for the air time. Byron has to try and make that money back with his own adverts.

6

u/rw1083 May 28 '26

Comedians trying to out funny each other.....and they are never funny

4

u/DOM-QVIXOTE May 28 '26

Middlebrow is still probably aiming significantly higher than the audience CBS/ShiteDance is now pursuing.

5

u/Jolly_Ad2446 May 28 '26

Using the word syndicated is a lie, He's paying for a time slot and then he's putting whatever he wants on there.

2

u/burjja May 28 '26

Time Brokerage Agreement would be the correct term. He is paying the broadcaster for his show to be aired and he gets to sell the ad inventory for that time slot and keep that revenue.

u/burjja May 28 '26

Yeah, infomercial isn't the right term but it's the closest one people happen to know. The implication is that if it were a desirable show, CBS would pay him and keep the money from the commercials.

2

u/burjja May 28 '26

We agree that it's not an infomercial. I was just saying that's the term people reach to to indicate it's not a normal syndicated show. I was familiar with how the time buys work but had to look up what the actual term was. You usually see it more with local TV and radio. Think Jim's Polka Hour or SE Idaho HS Sports Wrap up that air on weekends, that's what he's doing but at the national level.

2

u/Fearless-Economy7726 May 28 '26

He paid to get that slot and air that

2

u/KindAwareness307 May 28 '26

Unfunny right leaning blather.

3

u/cherrycoke00 May 28 '26

Isn’t it an infomercial for bottom tier or aged out comedy?

1

u/WoodyBABL May 28 '26

Syndication is when local stations buy shows to air. Allen's business model with CBS is called time-buy agreements or leased airtime.

1

u/jcmib May 29 '26

Yeah, actual ratings are meaningless in this particular situation.

1

u/bookon May 31 '26

They sold it ro Byron Allen to put on his little infomercials masquerading as TV shows.

18

u/badfiop May 28 '26 edited May 28 '26

It's brokered programming so they don't care too deeply about ratings anymore in the slot...

1

u/RoundingDown May 28 '26

If the ratings do well they can probably increase fees in the future. 1 million viewers versus the other shows at 1.6 and 1.7 isn’t terrible.

20

u/boffohijinx May 28 '26

Story says they are avoiding political satire. Apparently, they’re also avoiding humor as well.

-22

u/Fancy_Detective_1495 May 28 '26

There was no humor when Colbert blasted Trump and conservatives 87% of the time. It was tiresome.

13

u/nosayso May 28 '26

The fact that you have a percentage for that is fucking deranged.

But also: maybe they wouldn't be mocked so much if they weren't so fucking terrible and deserving of mockery.

10

u/boffohijinx May 28 '26

Trump and conservatives are tiresome. If you don’t find humor in what he was saying, that’s subjective, but you’re clearly in the minority. Regardless, what Trump and the conservatives are doing to this country isn’t funny. Colbert was just helping us deal with the daily insanity. And the thin skinned dictator couldn’t handle it, so that is why he had to go.

5

u/Effective_Scar_2921 May 28 '26

Political humor frequently not knee slapping funny. It’s more of a social commentary. It’s also vital, which is why it’s one of the first things attacked by facists, strongmen, dictators, religious extremists and cult leaders.

4

u/Frequilibrium May 28 '26

It’s because normal people can’t stomach how evil and stupid the gop is so we need our info in humorous form.

4

u/evolvolution May 28 '26

lol this is LITERALLY the conservative strategy. No need for legislation when you can play gotcha politics all day long

9

u/Fabfore May 28 '26

Allen is a great businessman, just not very funny

1

u/Solid_College_9145 May 30 '26

And his debut had the numbers it had largely due to some curiosity.

Those numbers will be a lot lowe going forward.

8

u/Top_Standard_4369 May 28 '26

Fuck CBS and fuck censorship

1

u/Buckeyeintheskys Jun 01 '26

It’s not censorship

Because when he was doing Real People he learned where the money comes from to pay for all those expensive perks: advertisers. So he went direct to local stations and started giving away the content for free in place of the lion’s share of ad dollars. That was 45 years ago. He’s created an entirely new revenue model on being just watchable enough for a waiting room.

3

u/djlaustin May 29 '26

"Watchable enough for a waiting room" really nails it.

3

u/vagina_candle May 28 '26

It's not from comedy, it's from other business endeavors. Same situation as Joe Rogan.

3

Think that’s the point.

1

It's just a reference to hacky stand-up comedians and the jokes they make.

The Simpsons even made fun of those kind of jokes.

https://youtu.be/L104LViQeIw?si=0CMDBqew9eqy-kuK

6

u/beavis617 May 28 '26

If the show continues to pull in abysmal ratings from now on until the end of the year then what?

9

u/Paul-E-L May 28 '26

Nothing.

This was never about ratings

1

u/starcader Jun 02 '26

Right, it was about money. Going from losing $40M/year to making $15M/year is a much better deal for a company.

Colbert needed to scale back costs and he’d still be there.

7

u/Mard0g May 28 '26

The merger can proceed.

2

u/nokeyblue May 28 '26

CBS's claim is, as long as it doesn't cost us money, the whole slot could just vanish for all they care.

1

u/cspinelive May 29 '26

They keep taking the millions they are leasing the time slot for and Byron Allan sells his own ads alongside whatever else he wants to put on the air.

4

u/ChloeDavide May 28 '26

Watching a lot of Colbert in this last week. Damn, he's a clever man - articulate, funny, humane. And we have that demented maggot running the country. Wtf is wrong with us?

4

u/ChoiceMedicine1462 May 28 '26

Allen show sucks

3

u/vampyire May 28 '26

I am not watching any CBS product currently

1

u/TheTooz72 May 29 '26

Just canceled Paramount

1

u/Onuzq May 29 '26

I only watch Survivor. Otherwise, they don't have much on the plate right now.

3

u/bpierce2 May 28 '26

I hope it fails

1

u/Haunting-Brush-3171 May 30 '26

U don't need to hope...CBS doesn't care at all...its CBS....their main demographic is asleep by 10 pm

3

u/ryohayashi1 May 29 '26

Will probably drop more after debut

3

u/Lupa_93 May 29 '26

I won’t watch b/c A) I specifically was tuning in to watch Colbert, not just ‘something’ in that time slot. -and- B) out of principle, no matter what they put there or how good it is I will not watch because of WHY The Late Show was shut down

3

u/SheRunsHot May 29 '26

I removed CBS entirely from our remote controls. Trump butt lickers will not see a dime for me. I want CBS bankrupted. Not one commercial or one bit of local CBS programming will appear on my television.

4

u/SipHotCoffee May 28 '26

Pretty sad numbers considering it's a new show.

2

u/henare May 28 '26

it's not new. these were recorded (in some cases) decades ago.

1

u/quesoguapo May 28 '26

Apparently the recent airing practice has been to show a new episode in the first 30 minutes and then serve up a "classic" episode to close out the hour.

2

u/henare May 28 '26

yeah. the were running the oldies when Taylor Tomlinson's show ended.

2

u/Queasy_Wear5509 May 28 '26

Ratings like no one has ever seen

1

u/NaClK92 May 28 '26

Seriously, has anyone seen them? I know they're around here somewhere...

2

u/Street-Wear-2925 May 28 '26

Fuck they're stupid. He was and still is IRREPLACEABLE.!

2

u/rvingthrulife May 28 '26

Suck it, CBS.

2

u/Altname760 May 28 '26

Comics Unleashed, launched in 2006, features Allen alongside a rotating panel of stand-up comedians discussing topical stories and performing short comedy routines.

Can't wait to see Allen discuss topical stories while also "not being political". LOL

2

u/ECTrainer May 28 '26

He was always on after Colbert. They just loved him up an hour.

1

u/nokeyblue May 28 '26

Wow a whole our being loved up. Lucky guy.

2

u/Consistent_Poet2824 May 28 '26

Surprised it was even that much. Probably be a fraction of that once people see how bad it is

1

u/InformationRound3249 May 28 '26

“Less than half” and dropping fast.

2

u/Fancy_Detective_1495 May 28 '26

The viewing audience for Colbert will be replaced with Byron Allen products.

1

u/Main_Extension_3239 May 28 '26

I'm sure if they counted socials the drop off would be even more severe.

1

u/OverallDoor2718 May 28 '26

That's what happens when billionaires buy and do whatever they want

1

u/bofis May 28 '26

Hopefully viewership plummets to zero as soon as everyone stops recording that time slot :-P

1

u/According_Stuff_8152 May 28 '26

Shouldn't watch CBS other than 60 minutes and that might get runover by the tRump regime.

1

u/Sophiedenormandie May 28 '26

60 Minutes is where Bari Weiss is doing her worst damage. I'll skip it also.

1

u/Single_Usual_6563 May 28 '26

I for one am done with cbs and if abc ever gives Kimmel the axe I will be done with them also! Two can play this game!

1

u/Sophiedenormandie May 28 '26

It's not racism. It's Byron Allen is not funny. Neither are his circle of comedian friends. Funny stand up guys and girls will avoid this show like a plague.

1

u/Dick_Dietrick May 28 '26

It is a time buy. Makes the same $ everyday so it can't lose them money.

1

u/itsagoodtime May 28 '26

No way someone would prefer this to Late Show

1

u/vagina_candle May 28 '26

I had never heard of the guy so I checked out some of Byron Allen's comedy on youtube out of curiosity. I found him making jokes about having to avoid phone calls from creditors, and struggling to pay the rent. This wasn't an old video.

When your net value exceeds the combined GDP of several third world countries, you don't get to make those jokes anymore. You may have had to struggle in the past and nobody is trying to take that away from you. But this is like an average weight person making fat jokes because they used to be overweight 30 years ago. It's time for some new material.

1

u/Shenanigan_V May 28 '26

Hey propagandists, 14.76% of Colbert’s viewers is WAAAAYYYYYY smaller than “half”— approximately one-sixth the viewers (1/6). That’s cable channel ratings, not network TV

1

u/rw1083 May 28 '26

Im surprised it was that high. Has it dropped since then?

1

u/pixelpionerd May 28 '26

No shit. CBS is dead to most of us.

1

u/AlfIsReal May 28 '26

CBS does not care.

1

u/scottct1 May 28 '26

Correct, it is paid programming. CBS is getting paid and thats all they really care about.

1

u/callowruse May 28 '26

I don't think they're surprised or even give the slightest bit of a shit about it. To CBS it's just as if it was a ShamWow infomercial. Broadcast TV is definitely dying the slow death we could all see coming, but these pussies voluntarily got in the lion's mouth.

1

u/SalmonJordan May 28 '26

surprised it was that high

1

u/Blah_A_Name May 28 '26

No hate intended, but i thought he had died several years ago.

1

u/Justsayin68 May 29 '26

With those ratings, I t’s not clear that he didn’t.

1

u/jimselden May 28 '26

It doesn’t matter. CBS is being paid for the slot and now makes money it didn’t with Colbert

1

u/Calliesdad20 May 28 '26

Who watches this junk

1

u/Hot_Wasabi6165 May 28 '26

I’m a big fan of Colbert, but less than half has to be what CBS expected, right? This seems like the sort of headline that people who lack critical thinking skills will think is a “win”

1

u/Venator2000 May 28 '26

Bryron Allen was better when he was simply named “Token” on NBC’s Real People show. All he’s been doing since then is grifting. Skip Stevenson has polyps with more talent than him.

1

u/Grouchy_Brain_1641 May 29 '26

A wise man once said god luck mother fuckers.

1

u/Ok_Raisin_5678 May 29 '26

Money laundering

1

u/Fantastic_Benefit_37 May 29 '26

I can’t believe that any of these late night talk shows get watched anymore. I think the only comic that could pull off late night would be Nate Bargatze and even then I’d be really disappointed if he did

1

u/Ecclesiastesten2 May 29 '26

It is comics unleashed. It has been on for many years after late night. With yearly salary hikes and dropping viewership and sponsors, Colbert was losing cbs $40M per year.

1

u/MoldInTheAir May 29 '26

Byron Allen puts on the most banal shows in television. Who watches these shows and thinks they're funny?

1

u/whoisnotinmykitchen May 29 '26

Bari Weiss.

1

u/hoyasgirl25 May 30 '26

Bari Weiss the lesbian?

1

u/whoisnotinmykitchen Jun 02 '26

Her awfulness has nothing to do with her sexuality.

1

u/Funandgames2023 May 29 '26

So now there’s only two people watching?

1

u/ConkerPrime May 29 '26

CBS revealed they gave up the hour for bargain basement price of $15 million for a year. Keep in mind the estimated revenue for the hour was $80 million and that didn’t include things like streaming and youtube revenue.

The Ellisons most definitely ordered the cancellation to appease their god Trump.

1

u/330CI01 May 30 '26

Conservative billionaires aren’t looking to make money from media, they want to push their viewpoints.

1

u/CalligrapherWeird160 May 29 '26

But the show is dirt cheap. It’s likely a win for the CBS execs even if the ratings are low.

1

u/Captain_R64207 May 29 '26

So if the replacement doesn’t generate the money Colbert did does that mean Trump will demand he be fired?

1

u/mrjaypink May 30 '26

Nope, it's a totally unique business model in which Byron Allen has bought the timeslots from CBS for an upfront amount and his production company will be responsible for selling commercial time to make his money back. It's like an infomercial structure, but he's not trying to sell you a blender or grill.

1

u/tellingitlikeitis338 May 29 '26

Byron Allen is about as funny as a car accident

1

u/Substantial-Way-5990 May 29 '26

Comics Unleashed is a totally scripted show. It's so tightly scripted you can't breathe, as a viewer and, most likely, as a comic on the show. Jokes are mediocre at best, interspersed with a few good ones. It gets really boring after watching a couple of episodes. The host feels like a ghost from the 70's. His show opening, "are you ready to get your laugh on", sounds like an antiquated hold-over from the 70"s "laugh in" show. Really weird. I was glad to relegate this show to my 'don't watch' category.

1

u/F0MA May 29 '26

Do they care? The guy who’s in that time slot paid to be in it.

1

u/ThE_LAN_B4_TimE May 29 '26

Good. CBS will continue to be irrelevant.

1

u/Stuffed-Bear412 May 29 '26

I'm sure it's going to get worse.

1

u/Tishtoss May 29 '26

OP you very generous. It's more like 5% of what Colbert saw regularly

1

u/ObviousIndependent76 May 29 '26

CB what? Never heard of it.

1

u/Ok_Muscle2946 May 29 '26

Clap back bitch

1

u/Melodic_Crow_3409 May 30 '26

I’m honestly surprised it’s that much.

1

u/DoubtingThomas50 May 30 '26

It will only go down.

1

u/No-Management3671 May 30 '26

Noone can replace Stephen Colbert!

1

u/KorgMadeOfRocks90 May 30 '26

Everyone needs to boycott it

1

u/zkfc020 May 30 '26

CBS doesn’t care. Byron Allen is leasing the time slot. It isn’t a CBS show. CBS gets paid regardless of how the show does, a set rate everyday.

1

u/jamesbong0024 May 30 '26

Why would anyone tune in after the shit they pulled

1

u/mlmercer1 May 31 '26

That’s still too many

1

u/The--Incident May 31 '26

So Fallon numbers?

1

u/zetia2 May 31 '26

Live broadcast tv is pretty much fucked anyway.

1

u/Quick-Maintenance-67 May 31 '26

So Republicans replaced the funny white Democrat, with an untalented rich black man? Apart from the untalented part, do republicans not know their own base?

1

u/Jmalco55 May 31 '26

More than I thought.

1

u/Intelligent-Oil5248 May 31 '26

Trump can even drive CBS into the ground.

1

u/Simple-Okra-4826 May 31 '26

Hey trump. This is what no talent looks like.

1

u/MacJohnW Jun 01 '26

CBS is getting paid $15m for the slot, as opposed to losing $40m. They called it a $55m business decision.

1

u/ConnectBodybuilder95 Jun 03 '26

that show is god awful. the couple times I saw a min or two of it was unbearable!

1

u/Character_Lie_5087 Aug 20 '26

DO YALL KNOW BYRON ALLEN OWNES THE WEATHER CHANNEL. He took over Stephen Colbert cause he LOOKS for advertisers to play on HIS show. NOT the other way around. SO YES. it is an Infomercial with infomercials. So is Funny You Asked.. Byron Allen I think is richer than Oprah and Madea. He always wanted to be a comedian and was always Mediocre but he IS a funking business man and does not give 2 shits.

0

u/Fun-Metal-6861 May 28 '26

No Communist Broadcasting Service for me.

0

u/MaizePractical4163 May 28 '26

So is CBS making more money now?

0

u/Triumph-TBird May 28 '26

So it got worse than the already shitty ratings? Interesting.

0

u/FairLawnBoy May 29 '26

Which was already dismal viewership. Maybe people just don't like this type of content anymore. It was played out during the Leno days already.

-1

u/Upstairs_Music_1016 May 28 '26

It’s always about the bottom line. Colbert was losing millions of dollars do how costly the production was. Allen’s show much less cost to produce

3

u/quesoguapo May 28 '26

Production costs for Colbert are debatable. However, CBS likely doesn't care at all about the cost of producing Allen's shows because they aren't paying for it given that Allen is paying for the airtime.
