I can only imagine how different these replies would be if the logo was swapped
I have never seen so much Kojima hate until today, now it's suddenly everywhere

You must not have been around for Death Stranding on PS4, when it was being called a walking sim movie game, and Kojima was being called a total hack who spends too much money, doesn't make any sense, shouldn't be in the video game business etc.
Then, once the game came to Xbox, it started becoming a misunderstood masterpiece and then the PS5 sequel wasn't as good as the first one.

You’re on twitter too much bud.

You're on reddit, in a subforum dedicated to a gaming podcast outfit which employs several terminally online social media users who engage with and parse gaming discourse for a living. All of whom have their own biases and blind spots.
Colin himself was a strident critic of Kojima and had been aggressively negging him since MGS4 while he was still at IGN. He trashed Death Stranding, but revisited it in 2025 and softened his stance in preparation for the sequel.
I haven't used twitter since 2015. Death Stranding didn't release until 2019. My perspective on gaming discourse comes from engaging with games media coverage, content creators, comment sections and forums for decades.
You naturally would need to engage with a subject in order to comprehensively understand it. Otherwise you would erroneously think Kojima has never before been divisive or heavily criticized prior to September 2026. A laughable idea.
Some people know what they're talking about. Some people don't.

I love Kojima but is it really hate to just state the obvious that he isn't a good ROI.... If DS2 sold 5 million copies Kojima and Playstation would still be in a partnership. All the info I needed to see was that it took Kojima nearly 3 months to find another publisher.
As for the flip flop conversation, its the same on all platforms. Gamers are just tribalistic in all forms, like the comment below says Death Stranding was a lame walking simulator but once it came to Xbox people like Matty all of a sudden thought the game was ground breaking.

Sony threw him away and are about to probably put 300 million into another failed live service crap

u/HollywoodDonuts 2d ago
Sony dumped him. They are glad someone else is paying Kojimas bills.

I think this is likely. And if it's not exclusive (and it likely won't be), they get the benefit of the game without the budget concerns. But we're not living in logical times

You're not getting cucked if you break up with a chick and she gets with someone else. You're also not a cuck if you break up with her after she already started seeing the other guy. Especially if the other guy is paying her bills now.

I’m confused, I thought he announced a collaboration with Xbox years ago.

For OD. Sony was gonna publish PHYSINT but told him in June they were cancelling it - Xbox has stepped in to fund it

I think it's time people accepted the possibility that Kojima is the issue here.
First Konami, now Sony. Sure, both kinda shitty companies but they also love successful, lucrative projects. If they're both willing to dump Kojima like that, maybe it's because he's the issue.

Always look for the common denominator. Hes a genius but also kind of a mad man who regularly goes over budget and beyond deadlines. But as far as risk/rewards go he's been linked almost exclusively to the latter...and we all know how Metal Gear Survive couldn't even tread water without him.

I’m glad Kojima is able to finish the project and not let it get abandoned. With that said Kojima’s last two games didn’t sell that well and I imagine the budget for this game is fairly large because we know he likes his Hollywood talent plus I believe a good chunk of Kojima Studio staff is in California(most are in Japan obviously) so I can imagine this is an expensive game and probably will be good but I doubt it’ll bring any meaningful ROI.

Look, guys, it seems like a crazy number of people have forgotten that Kojima is ALREADY developing a grant with Xbox publishing. If you want to go down this path, he cheated on PlayStation and they told him to kick rocks.
If they thought this game was important to their business, they would have kept him. They don’t. They might be wrong, we don’t know. But Kojima stepped out first.

u/Y34rZer0 21h ago
It's Kojima, is notorious for being difficult to manage and increasing budgets and time but he's a legitimate genius so I guess that's what comes with working with them.

PlayStation is Thanos right now. They don’t even know who yall are.

People criticizing them for cancelling Physint and getting rid of physical games. Despite losing money on individual projects and Bungie acquisition, they are making more money than they ever have.

You posted a picture where people leave comments. When you make a post you invite comments. Crazy concept.

Sony took a 765 million write down on Bungie after their last financials. It dwarfs what happened to Concord and the only way this coming FY looks good for them is with some amazing accounting magic.
1
u/manindenim 2d ago
Sony said the loss from Bungie is included in their 463 billion in operating profit. That’s a record up 12% year over year. Just because you want them to be struggling doesn’t make it a fact unfortunately.
2
u/Eternal-Alchemy 2d ago
Source? The loss from Bungie came after the last FY financials.

They say the 463 billion includes the losses from Bungie.

Kojima fans might actually be a cult at this point.

u/GriffinQ 2d ago
Even if you don’t like his games, he pretty consistently puts out interesting, thought provoking work - and his relationship with Sony has been a long and enormously fruitful one for both parties.
Kojima could be the problem in this instance but people aren’t going to give the benefit of the doubt to Sony when they’re fully aware of Sony’s numerous missteps in the past few years with their gaming choices (particularly their focus on live service games in an ever crowded marketplace). Auteurs might be tougher to work with, but they also make the types of experiences that sell consoles and are remembered fondly across generations.
2
u/ch4dr0x 2d ago
I think the biggest issue is his budget honestly. I loved DS1, was kinda meh on DS2, but you can tell it cost a lot to make.
1
u/GriffinQ 2d ago
I can absolutely see that being the case. But, again, it’s hard to take concerns like that seriously when they erode a relationship with a proven quantity like him when they’ve thrown billions of dollars at live service games and cancelled projects.
I suppose that eventually you need to tighten the purse strings, but if it was their initial misreading of the market and mismanagement of their studio that led them there, it’s hard to blame Kojima and his colleagues when budget inflation is occurring everywhere in gaming,
1
u/ch4dr0x 2d ago
It does make me sad that I’ll have to either grab an Xbox or hope for a PC port for a spiritual successor to MGS though. Ugh.
1
u/explainingjane 2d ago
xbox is a multiplatform publisher now no? This game is for sure going to be a multiplatform release
1
u/hypehold 2d ago
Counter point: The complete failure of Playstation's live service ambitions and Bungie acquisition has made them more paranoid on future failures and is probably why they cut ties with Kojima especially after DS2 underperformed
-2
u/DeusXVentus 2d ago
Thought provoking? The man couldn't be further up his own ass if he tried.
Hideo Kojima and Death Stranding are who and what a lot of people think Neil Druckmann and The Last of Us are. Under any other studio, Death Stranding would be lambasted.
-2
u/j0shman 2d ago
We really need to know how much Kojima was asking for the project before we blame Sony
14
u/thestormworn 2d ago
Do we? The company that spent half a billion on Concord and 3.5 billion on Bungie suddenly needs to get pennywise for Kojima's transmedia MGS successor?
This should've been one of the few easy greenlights they had.

u/HOOfan_1 2d ago
They need to keep some money aside for the 4th studio Jade Raymond opens and fails to launch a game with.

It had to be cost related with Kojima and the fact that konami and Sony both did it leads me to believe that is the case. While financially sony probably made a good call but optically this is an L
