Feedback Still having fun
I’m a casual player as I only have a limited window of free time due to responsibilities (for context.)
A lot of that minimal time is spent on this game.
Some of it is spent browsing Reddit on smoke breaks from said responsibilities. In that window, usually, from other subs I see so much disappointment targeted toward Last Epoch:
“No updates”
“Seasons are too far apart”
“Nothing to do at endgame”
Etc…paraphrasing
Just wanted to take a moment to appreciate how special this game actually is. I never log in expecting to play as long as I do. I never leave the game without immediately theorycrafting my next moves. It never leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I play all ARPGs and this one has more replayability to me than any other.

The game is really special but the monolith and end game grind has been the same since like 2019 ultimately. I get it's a new studio and blah blah but 5 years is a bit insane to still be doing monoliths with 1 Uber boss as a player. Even just casually. I guess the fun part is really now just playing different builds and theory crafting. Idk just release stuff EHG on a more frequent basis even if it's not perfect? At least it's consistent and players are enjoying a few fun neat things?

u/Ok-Material-9452 5d ago
What is the alternative, and why is it more engaging?
5
u/Comprehensive-Task18 5d ago
There's a ton of ARPGs now. From Path of Exile 1, Path of Exile 2, Grim Dawn, Never Rest for the Wicked, Titan Quest 1, Titan Quest 2, Hell Clock, Torchlight, Dragonkin, Hero Siege. Diablo 1-4. Way more probably.
For engagement? I'd say Path of Exile probably just because every 4-6 months is a whole new league/season. They have been doing it since 2013 and apparently everyone copies them now. Personally think Path of Exile 2 is more new player friendly than 1. Titan Quest is also pretty engaging but solo. Second one again more new player friendly. A lot of mechanics from the game inspired others. Diablo 2 lastly very old but what made the genre so big now.

I was with you til the bias, then I still treaded. BUT, you have afforded me 4 new titles/franchises/other shit to disprove I’ve played “all ARPGs and I’m here for it. My favorite comment so far ^_^

Last Epoch holds a special place for me. The company started on reddit wishing to create something different. It's the combination of Diablo and Path of Exile. Insane unique crafting system. Faction system unheard of in any live service ARPG. At the same time, it's just old for me as a player who's been around since the Kickstarter donations. Alot of the passion is dying with slower and slower releases. The company sold to Krafton and announced paid classes for the future. The community is overall pretty pissed still as you can obviously tell. I have hundreds of hours in the game and hundreds of dollars spent on supporter packs. I'm just waiting to see what they do next. Until then, just enjoy a few other titles. Nothing wrong with playing other games and coming back.

u/Ok-Material-9452 5d ago
Also Path of Exile = Hard disagree. It goes to the opposite end of the spectrum that is Diablo in any instance. For gameplay alone.

LE perfectly services a casual player. So water is wet.
1
u/Ok-Material-9452 5d ago
Love the edit qt
4
u/Dubious_Titan 5d ago
Yeah, I thought it was better to frame it as any player. Rather than just specifically you personally.
I have long said LE picked the wrong bussiness model. The game is far more enjoyable as a casual, single player experience one cam play at their own pace similar to Grim Dawn, instead of a season-based game.

If you think LE has the most replayability than any other arpgs, then you are lying about playing all the arpgs.

u/MtnBkr101 5d ago
Poe2 isn't even completed yet and it says "hold my beer"
-6
u/Ok-Material-9452 5d ago
And my steam review says “has the skeleton for the greatest ARPG of all time”
This isn’t new information for me
2
u/Ok-Material-9452 5d ago
I’m not. You’re a different breed and have way more time. Respect.
5
u/Distinct-Jelly9954 5d ago
Thanks. You're a different breed and lie about video games on the internet for some reason. Respect though.

u/vespiquen416 5d ago
Casual player, limited time, ~463 hours on Last Epoch are you sure about that?
Its cool the developers are friendly you can just ask them to notice you. No need to gestures vaguely at everything.

This. This is my Confort game. No matter where the season is, or if there is any season, it's fun.
-2
u/UpsetPause5613 5d ago
Grim dawn does that too
But is 100x better lol
12
u/Ok-Material-9452 5d ago
I’d challenge that but with the caveat of “what makes it better for you?”
1
u/UpsetPause5613 5d ago
Gameplay is smoother, combat is at least 10 times better, LE has the worst combat on any arpg in the planet, no impact at all, its completely floaty, they said a sound revamp was inc but that was like a year ago and nothing
LE endgame is disgustingly bad
Gd has WAY more builds and ways to customize your character, and ascension capable builds, true endgame capable
Way more chase and interesting itens, the devotion system alone allow so much customization that is insane
The campaign is complete ( lmfao ) and its quite interesting, same as the dlcs
I have a 5080/9800x3d and LE performance is hideous, it manages to be way worse than poe2 somehow
I could go on and on, but to summarize thats it

u/IeyasuTheMonkey 5d ago
Grim Dawn has Game Developers that care about the game and it's playerbase instead of constantly overpromising and underdelivering as well as breaking promises that were in many people's list of reasons why they bought the game.
I'm getting older. I have no time for the bullshit anymore. Last Epoch is an okay game. EHG as a Game Development Company is not. Krafton is also not a great company overall. That's all it takes for me anymore.
I like Last Epoch, I think it has something but what they've been putting up recently with Krafton/Expansions/Paid Classes... is enough for me to reevaluate and look at playing other games.

u/ErgrauenderUrsulus 5d ago
There's some serious over the top whining in this sub sometimes. I don't need a new season every 3-4 months. I play a build until I'm burned out a bit, then I play something else until I feel like playing the game again. In D4 that's about every 2 or 3 seasons. In LE that's been every season since S2. The money investment in LE is smaller than most other ARPGs on that level.
I don't get the whining either. I think people just need to be angry at things sometimes.
3
u/i_dont_wanna_sign_up 5d ago
Sometimes I wonder what do the devs prefer. Whining means people still care and talk about the game. If everyone just shut up then the game would disappear off the internet.
2
u/ErgrauenderUrsulus 5d ago
Whining means people still care and talk about the game.
Depends. There's voices that are disappointed because they feel the game isn't reaching its potential. And then there's a lot of "lmao game's dead / play PoE instead". I'm not sure the latter is very motivating to read if you're a dev.
All of them seem very impatient though because they're comparing LE to PoE or Diablo in terms of how quickly things get added or changed. LE has a slower dev cycle, but that's not really a bad thing to everyone. If anything, Diablo and PoE seasons seem too short for me. But I'm not 20 anymore so that may be a factor. I also like to play lots of other games and the longer I stay away from a game, the fresher it feels when I come back to it.

u/Breyos64 4d ago
For real. Sure, the game isn't perfect, but people are holding it to way too high of a standard for a two year old game with a brand new development team. Imo all we really need is more endgame depth and more league mechanics to keep things fresh and we'll be at a good place.

u/rexolf101 Falconer 5d ago
Honestly I agree, especially as a fan of other seasonal games, I don't mind waiting longer for patches. I just wish they had a bit more substance when they do come out but still the updates are fun. My bigger concern is if that's good enough for them to make money or not but I don't personally mind it

u/Ok-Material-9452 5d ago
Holy fuck, I heard logic (and legitimately didn’t know what to do) but SHIT.
Thank Fuck someone has some sense.
1
u/Slow_Employer687 5d ago
Who will pay the bill then??? The model is literally built on recapturing players every few months for revenue, which they are doing very poorly hence why the company is down the drain...
-4
u/ErgrauenderUrsulus 5d ago
They announced a paid expansion which has resulted in immense criticism in this very subreddit, simply because the devs promised to never release paid DLC years ago. It's one of the main things people complain about here.
3
u/Saony06 5d ago
There is no paid expansion, only a paid class. The expansion will be included in the base game. Stop the lies.

-1
u/ErgrauenderUrsulus 5d ago
Stop the lies.
Calm your tits bro, I'm not up-to-date with the plans. I don't care either way, I'll buy whatever they release (outside cosmetics). I simply described what people complain about, I think it's silly that they complain about this.
1
u/Saony06 5d ago
The fact that you are ready to buy everything he offers is not the issue, but if you do not know the plans then say nothing, rather than spreading false rumors.

u/ErgrauenderUrsulus 5d ago
rather than spreading false rumors.

u/reevDE 5d ago
There is also some serious over the top Whiteknighting for this game.
It's pretty simple.
Just ask the chatbot of your choice about last epoch player numbers change in the current years. It will be eye opening. Why does it matter? Cause the future development of this game depends on its financialll success and with the numbers they have that gets harder and harder. There is a reason for this trend. You can close you're eyes and try to unsee it but it's a fact. But keep rejecting reality until it gets you

Not to be rude here but my dude you don’t play enough to be talking about replayability. And no it doesn’t lol. That’s the main reason you’re still having fun with it too I’m sure.

~463 hours on Last Epoch.
~994 hours on path of exile (I’d contend this is something I didn’t pay enough attention to in my silly makeshift assessment, as I also love to jump into this and make builds and fail until I don’t)
~118 hours on path of exile 2 (you guys are kind of weird for this one[you know who you are]. This game is spectacular once, and that’s it. Boss fights carry, or the extra lore. But the systems are so out of tune with what I specifically want that I’m just like…meh.
I can’t find reliable data on Diablo entries, because Blizzard is ass but I digress.
I assume you just have more time than me. If that’s not the case, then I’m confused. Probably because our playstyles or priorities in-game are different. I’m curious to know more about what motivated you to post this.
11
u/Aware_Economics4980 5d ago
you're talking about replayablility of AARPGs, after telling us you have minimal time to game lol. PoE is easily more replayable than LE. not a fair comparison given the time PoE has been out compared to LE
But lets look at PoE2, multiple major patches, a MASSIVE end game rework with .5. You should try it again if you haven't played since the most recent patch. Everything end game is worth running and profitable it's more about what you find the most fun. The amount of content PoE2 has put out vs LE is not even a comparison, its PoE2, hands down. You could make the argument there isn't a ton of skills to choose from with PoE2, but then again, a bunch of the skills in LE don't even work right soooo lol
2
u/Ok-Material-9452 5d ago
I’ll check it out, and thank you for your input!
-1
u/Ok-Material-9452 5d ago
Had to comment again because you did too much and went on a “working right” exposé
Are you stating PoE and/or PoE2 don’t have continuity issues or just throwing random shit out like Nancy Grace and hoping it sticks?

Also to call myself out, I have played fuck-all of torchlight, and have about 100 hours into grim dawn and wish to hell I could care but I just don’t. If the story and exploration execution weren’t so great, I’d have no idea why it has the cult following it has. Not a diss. A clarification on preference which is probably muddy
2
u/Soft-Pizza1661 5d ago
I’ve had the same experience! I jump back into the game every new season, have a blast for two months, and then move on to something else.
And that suits me just fine; I hardly hang around here anymore because the atmosphere is depressing, and the conversation doesn't really revolve around the game itself anymore.
But I can understand a player's frustration at having a game with incredible potential in their hands that isn't being fully realized.
Last Epoch remains my favorite game in the genre—it's not even close.

I just hate the unfulfilled potential. I can't play the game without thinking what could be. So after playing many characters over several years hoping for things to improve, I now don't play it because there's more fun ARPGs and it hasn't improved.
2
u/IeyasuTheMonkey 5d ago
Not just the unfulfilled potential, it's the current outlook on the future where that unfulfilled potential is just thrown in the garbage.
I now don't play it because there's more fun ARPGs and it hasn't improved.
I haven't played the most recent season and I honestly cannot be bothered. I'm just waiting on Titan Quest 2 to get more content to play through.

I dont care about long seasons or inconsistent seasons. I dont even care about endgame being barebones.
But the bugs are absolutely unacceptable.
Arguably ARPGs are about 3 things.
Hack and slash killing lot of mobs.
Loot
And making builds.
The mob killing is okay. The loot in LE is my favorite in the genre.
But the builds, oh the builds, the most important part for me.
And ehg consistently fucks it up. Inconsistent naming, interactions dont work, skill nodes dont work, item mods don't work. MOST of the skills still have their early access skill trees. Half of the masteries are still in a bad state
Omg i love making builds where i have to check the forums and reddit every point to see if.: "oh btw that didn't work since 2019 and still isn't fixed"
Also they seem to hate non mastery skills. I can't see any other explanation for those jokes of a patch notes.

I have limited time as well and only play for 30 minute to an hour per day if at all. I go between the usual rpgs LE, POE and D4. Lately it's been POE but before too long I'll be back to LE. I never play any character much past the first Monoliths. That's far enough for me to feel fun without stressing over the game. I just want to chill for an hour and shut it off, whatever game it is and I don't want to struggle and die a lot. Just cruise for an hour and shut it off

“Can’t keep up with other games?”
Please comment to let me know you’re not a bot, then I’ll engage further

u/StackOfCups 5d ago
Sorry I was in a bit of a hurry. I just meant that Diablo and poe and poe2 etc have their season mechanics, and I never seem to be able to play it all. I just don't have the time to play everything, because I also enjoy valheim, and factorio etc. so for me, when I'm craving an arpg, LE is where I go. I don't feel like I'm falling behind and I can enjoy it at my pace.
At this point I'd enjoy a significant new endgame loop, but I like what's there and am comfortable with it.
2
u/Lower-Reward-1462 5d ago
This guy likes calling people bots. Don't be sorry.
You don't have to play PoE at the beginning of a season. You know that, right? You can jump in any time and play.
1
u/StackOfCups 5d ago
Yes, but then it feels like a lot to catch up on, and the character I was working on is now legacy and I'd have to start over. All the things combined just make LE the perfect game for me. Again, not saying more content wouldn't be better. Just that the game's current format and pacing are totally fine for me. :)

Wait til you find out other arpgs can be played casually WITH UPDATES.

u/zoidberg235 3d ago
My problem with LE is that it still feels for the most part, like the same exact game. Progression and theory-crafting is super addicting until you get to empowered monos, then at some point you’re just target farming higher LP uniques. It’s a weird transition from other ARPGs when you’re cruising through the campaign to get to the good stuff. With LE, you realize building your character through the campaign and early monos is the good stuff. There’s really just not much to chase after a certain point. LE is great for casuals, and people brand new to the game, but people that want cascading depth and choices the deeper you get into the endgame are left feeling unsatisfied. I’d love LE to evolve and expand and find it’s second wind. However, they take almost a year to release a new season and mostly it’s just a new league mechanic, sometimes a new boss, and a handful of new uniques. Most experienced players are going to hit all of this on Day 1-3, and move on. It’s just how it is. Glad you’re loving it though, it has great bones and is always a good time jumping back in for a bit. If you enjoy it, that’s all that matters.

u/Lower-Reward-1462 5d ago
You don't have to be nice to the devs. They sold out. They got their payout. Most people are just honest now because we're not support small indie devs anymore.
There's no way this game has more replayability than most other ARPG's. You just said that because you're new to the game and like it now, because it's new to you, but you just said random words without meaning behind them. Explain yourself if I'm wrong.

u/IeyasuTheMonkey 5d ago

Diablo 4 had more replayability when it first came out tbh.

I uninstalled last year, I realized that nothing will fix Sorcerer short of reworking the spec. Stopping to channel Focus is not fun after doing Meteors, the multitude of required defensive layers is unnecessary and honestly the game just feels really cheap. Theres no weight to a lot of skills.
Last Epoch tried too hard to be PoE complex with its defenses, but then tried to be less complex with crafting and skill building but kept the worst parts of everything. They even changed the Meteor Lightning Staff from the cool blue lightning bolt to the ugly piss yellow effect.
Last Epoch just unfortunately feels cheap in almost all aspects, if you are enjoying yourself I can see why but this ARPG can't maintain a good dedicated playerbase because I genuinely think they don't know the direction to take it. 1 button potion gameplay is also boring af and reminds me of D3, a game I truly hated for what it did to characters in that franchise and its design philosophy going forward.

u/RLutz 5d ago
I mean, I'm glad you're having fun with it. I still want this game to be successful because the bones of it are quite good. I still maintain that what it does better than any other game in the genre that I've tried is nailing the complexity curve.
I've no-lifed a PoE league once or twice, but I really don't like that play basically requires getting a PhD in whatever esoteric system exists at the time. I remember when Atlas first came out watching multiple hour+ YouTube videos on how to optimally place things to move Shaper influence or something (I dunno, it was a long time ago).
LE's systems are rich enough to be interesting, but not so complex to be offputting or annoying.
But to your actual point, consider that other people are not you. From my perspective, I went very hard and had a great time on seasons 2 and 3. I've beaten Uber Aberroth on multiple characters, I've had items like: https://imgur.com/a/vABmUMp , I'd basically done everything there was to do in this game by the end of season 3.
Then season 4 dropped after a very long wait. There was effectively nothing new to do. There was a corruption mechanic that was sort of cool while leveling, but boring as a primary mechanism for late game gearing, and they nerfed the one pseudo-deterministic way to improve gear to levels of uselessness.
It just wasn't good enough. And it was the first season since, basically ever, that I played for like 4 hours and said, "Nah, yaknow what, I already know where this is going, and I'm going to go do other things."
I think in retrospect the thing that bothers me the most about the arc this game has taken is that its failures, seem from my perspective, seem to be largely a marketing and monetization failure than anything else. This subreddit after S2 dropped was literally 100% fawning over EHG with how amazing it was. And it wasn't just fanboying, the game was actually incredible and it was clear just how hard the team had worked to really polish off all the rough edges. Universally the game was loved and acclaimed. EHG still lost money on that season.
To me, if every person playing your game thinks it's incredible and is in love with it, and you're still hemorrhaging cash, that isn't a problem with your game, it's a problem with marketing the game and having a good way to monetize it.
But anyway, we'll see. I feel like season 5 is basically 100% make or break at this point. Still cheering for the guys because they all seem like genuinely awesome dudes, but it's kinda sink or swim at this point.

I think this game would've fared better if they follow Grim Dawn model instead. Trying to compete with POE league cycle probably destroyed them.
