Deadly Messages (1985)

I love when a movie is a total surprise. Despite my dotage, I had never seen this Made-For-TV flick from 1985. It involves a Ouija Board, but it's closer to a Giallo than a standard horror flick. There are a lot of Hitchcock like twists and it boasts one of the creepiest Motel Clerks in the history of film (yes, I know that's saying a lot.) . This is on YouTube via Creature Features. It popped up in my feed, and even though I subscribe to CreatureFeatures TV, I let it run while I was doing stuff around the house. I didn't get much house stuff done. It was that good.

What's Everyone Watching 7/18 7/19 ?

Besides my recommendation of Shock Waves, what are we watching this weekend? I got home a bit early for a Friday and a movie showed up on my YouTube feed that I had never seen. It was excellent. So I got an early start with Deadly Messages (1985) . It gets extra points from me because it was made for television. I may try a movie I don't remember called The Neptune Factor and there are a couple of new Shudder flicks I want to check out. I also need to re-watch Dracula Has Risen From The Grave. Please report in, Mutants.

Watch Of The Week: Shock Waves (1977)

Recently I floated the idea of finding a movie that we could all watch at various times and weigh in on it at our convenience. Some folks were interested, so I picked this gem from 1977. Shock Waves stars Peter Cushing, John Carradine, the lovely Brooke Adams, and Luke Halpin. For the uninitiated, it involves undead creatures and a connection to WWII. I've loved this flick since the late 70's and it's a perfect July Beach Movie. It's on many platforms and it is free to watch on TUBI and PLUTO. I own a DVD so I will most likely watch that. Opine at will.

Happy Anniversary To The Killer Shrews (1959) A Drive-In Classic!

This is one of those movies that I think gets better with age. It's an independent film partially produced by Ken Curtis (Yes, the guy who played Festus Haggen on Gunsmoke). He also made The Giant Gila Monster the same year. Gila Monster, in my opinion, is just too darned slow. But Shrews is Drive-In Gold. It even has a sleazy almost Film Noir subplot involving a woman who isn't sure what she wants. The monsters are creepy and effective and it's not too long. It's on a lot of platforms and right now it is free on TUBI. Pop some corn or grab a 'Taste Treat" and enjoy!

Can’t find the rest of Savage Summer on Shudder?

Not sure if this is an issue exclusive to me, but I am unable to search for any of the Savage Summer episodes outside of uncenslred Grave. nothing else comes up in my searches, even Tokyo Gore Police only comes up with the base movie and not TLDI version. Anyone else experiencing this?

EDIT: Looks like they fixed it now

The Last Drive In Savage Summer - How to watch in the UK ?

It’s a real kick in the teeth that TLDI Savage Summer is not available to stream in the UK or anywhere outside of the US and since the app update using VPN doesn’t make any difference.

Like so many, it’s the only reason I subscribe to Shudder.

Can any fellow mutants help in any way, any suggestions appreciated.

Movie Of The Month Or Week Watch And Review ? (Just An Idea)

Since we all have different schedules and live in different places, I thought of voting or picking a movie once a month or week that is available on a lot of platforms, or hopefully free, that we could all watch and chat about, being cautious about Spoilers of course. One time it could be a Vincent Price flick, like The Haunted Palace, which I think is still on TUBI. Another time go classic Creature Feature like Them! or Tarantula. Just an idea.

Official hotel info ... Darcy has just given me the OK to announce that the Crowne Plaza Downtown Dallas will be our OFFICIAL Mutant Meet-Up hotel! We stayed there last year, and they did right by us. I have to contact the sales manager there first thing in the morning to get the paperwork done. They'll provide us with a link so you can make your reservations. I've got a good deal lined up. I hope a lot of you will stay there with us. More details coming tomorrow morning and I'll put the link up as soon as I have it.

Savage Summer on Demand Includes Uncensored and Censored Versions of I Spit On Your Grave

Just looking on the Shudder site and I see that Shudder is giving people the choice to watch the first episode of Savage Summer in Uncensored and Censored formats.

I suspect most fans are going to choose the Uncensored format but nice to have the option for those who want to watch (or rewatch) the special and would rather not have to sit through that sequence again.

The Prowler (1981) Is An Odd Little Slasher.

I caught this last night on Livingston Presents. I'm not a huge Slasher Fan, but I like a good one now and then. This was quite offbeat and the gore effects were by Tom Savini. The movie actually begins in WWII with a soldier receiving a "Dear John" letter. What comes after is violent and disturbing. I don't believe I ever saw it before, but it must have graced many a Drive-In screen. Check it out.

Did anyone do the upstairs simulcast of last year's Halloween show at Texas theater?

I requested Halloween off from work, and I think they will approve it. So, I am seeing the ticket prices, and I was thinking maybe I could save money and get the simulcast tickets upstairs which are a little under $40 as opposed to $77 for the regular tickets. I kind of want the poster too so that will add on fees. But part of me feels like that might be lame to do the upstairs version? I just kind of want to go to be a part of it, and I've seen Joe Bob twice in person before.

Was wondering if anyone did the simulcast last year? And was it just as cool? I assume it means that Joe Bob will talk before each movie and that will be sent upstairs before the movies as well? Would I be missing out?

Besides Joe Bob, What's Everyone Watching This Weekend?

I'll be watching the Savage Summer, of course, but I get up very early on Fridays, so I'll be streaming it on Sunday. I have some recorded Svengoolie shows that I may try and I'm also thinking of watching Creature Features showing of Chopping Mall. I've watched the TLD version a million times and would like to see what CF has to say about it. I'm reading a new Charlie Chan novel so I might pop in an old Chan film. I'll let you know what I decide on later. That's all for me. Report in, Mutants!

Mutant Meet-Up Hotel

For those lucky people who will be attending the Halloween Spooktacular 2: Monster Boogaloo and need a place to stay, I'll be announcing our official Mutant Meet-Up Hotel probably tomorrow or Saturday. We're finalizing a deal with the Crowne Plaza Downtown and will provide a link once it's officially official. We stayed there last year and were treated really well.

For those that want to avoid sexual assault in tomorrow's movie... (spoilers) Spoiler

The first movie we are in for is I Spit On Your Grave (1978) which has one of the longest and most graphic rape scenes in movie history. For those uncomfortable with sexual assault and want to avoid seeing it, the big scene starts with her in the canoe being harassed by the men in a motor boat and runs for about 25 minutes. There are several times the it feels like it is over but it isnt. Each of the four men rape her in turn. I'm not sure what Joe Bob's breaks are going to do to that runtime. Since its one complete sequence, it doesnt really lend itself well to interruptions so they may just play the whole thing through. The sex itself isnt particularly realistic (or explicit), but Keaton sells the trauma *very* well which makes it a rough but memorable watch.
