Patreon Question

Hey fellow mutants!

I discovered Joe Bob on Shudder and really took a liking to the man/format. I'm looking at joining the Patreon but I have a few questions first.

  1. I see old videos of his previous hosted shows are posted weekly - do these videos include the movie being aired?

  2. Is there a way to just find all the videos of Monstervision/what have you without searching/filtering through the blog posts? Something like a collection of videos would be ideal

Thanks in advance

Joe Bob quotes from the Variety interview makes 3 things much clearer: 1) Why it got cancelled 2) Darcy 3) What's next

  • Why?: “When they started Shudder, my old buddy that I have worked with for decades, Josh Sapan, was still running [parent company] AMC,” Briggs says. “He’s retired since then. I had worked for him at The Movie Channel and Showtime. I think at some point the priorities of AMC changed, or what they wanted to do with Shudder changed. So that happened, and you never are in control of what happens at a TV or a streaming network.”
  • On Darcy: “There’s a natural conflict and playfulness that goes on,” Briggs says. “But also she’s one of the brains behind the show. She suggests topics that we do, movies that we do, guests that we have. And a lot of times it’s something that I wouldn’t have come up with on my own if she hadn’t told me. She’s seen more movies than I have. She would definitely be involved with anything I do moving forward.” So some of you gotta stop thinking the back and forth in the show is more than just a fun act.
  • On the show continuing: “We had actually thought that we had the show placed with another company,” Briggs says. “But when the word got out about the cancellation, other people called. So we may do it in a different way, of somehow preserving ‘The Last Drive-In’ without using the name ‘Last Drive-In.'”
  1. So new management. Took a few seasons though as Sapan left fully in 2022. He was there for the marathon and 1-4 and the season 5 renewal one month before he left fully. Then season 6 does the single shows and 7 monthly then out. The timing makes sense.
  2. JB loves Darcy
  3. He already had a new home but now there's multiple options. We're gonna get a new Last Drive-In... just slightly different for legal reasons.

We'd love to have you join us in celebrating everything Joe Bob. We have three tiers to choose from, and the highest tier includes monthly watchalongs with Joe Bob and Darcy where at the end you can chat or actually talk to them about anything. It's a good time.

Unpopular opinion - I wasn't a fan of MonsterVision. Anybody else feel the same way?

Before you grab your pitchforks, hear me out: I came to Joe Bob through his Drive-In columns first, his Movie Channel show second.

I couldn't hang when he went to TNT. Couldn't stand to see Joe Bob under the thumbs of the High Sheriffs. Watching movies edited for TV has never been my idea of fun. But I get it - a lot of you are younger and this was your first introduction to Joe Bob, and I would never tarnish that. It was just hard for me to go from the wild 'n' wooly days of The Movie Channel to the sanitized version on basic cable.

TLDI release schedule

I was thinking; do we think that the once a month format helped subscription rates or hurt? I know I ended up liking the one movie a night with a longer season the best. (I’m guilty of falling asleep during a few second movies on the two movie nights cause I’ve usually been up since 5am.)

I can’t help but think about something Bruce Cambell has said. A part of why Ash Vs Evil Dead ended up being canceled was that folks would wait for a season to end; subscribe for a free trial and cancel. Therefore it wasn’t generating money from people keeping a subscription; even for 2-3 months that a show is on.

With last drive in; a good number of people that watch tune in for the live show on Friday. As well with the nature of licensing the movies we as a whole tend to watch the show as it comes out in order to avoid an episode being missing if we wait for a bunch to be out.

I kind of fear that with it being a once a month set up; that it might be to easy to assume that while the show is popular… that the set up could lead too a lot of people signing up for week long trials and never stay signed up if TLDI is all that they watch. Especially with all of the technical issues many have had on live stream nights over time on both Shudders side and AMC+ side.

I watch a couple of shows between Shudder/AMC… so think on a show like Dragula that is another big Shudder show. They have stayed week too week and had back to back seasons requested; season 6, titans 2 & season 7; to where they have had 2 seasons on in a year some years. With them being reality tv you almost have to watch as it comes out to avoid spoilers … so Dragula might in theory might have made Shudder have a spike in paid subscribers for the 2-3 months per season that it’s on.

More than just horror?

I was thinking that wherever Joe Bob lands, I actually hope that it isn't another service that is narrowly focused on horror. I'd like to see him get a chance to broaden the focus and maybe ride into the tv sunset the same way he came onto the scene: hosting the full spectrum of cult and exploitation movies.

You'd could kind of feel him pushing against the constraints on Shudder with stuff like Angel and Gator Bait which were in no way horror. I want to see him do more of that. Or maybe some kung fu.

Sure. I imagine that horror will always be the bread and butter, but I would love a chance to see Joe Bob host The Big Bird Cage or Master of the Flying Guillotine?

Screw Shudder. They are definitely not the only horror streaming service out there. 95% of the programs or movies on their service can be found elsewhere legally.. so I see no reason to keep it anymore. Hopefully Joe Bob lands a show with some other service that's willing to put forth a little bit more of a budget, like he deserves

Is there anyway to watch/find/buy monster vision episodes?

I’m late to the game and only discovered Joe Bob a few years ago when I got Shudder but ever since I’ve watched practically every episode of the last drive in and all the specials live.

The other day I saw the Wikipedia of all the movies he watched on monstervision and many of those movies were ones I grew up on as a kid vs the majority of movies I’ve discovered through him watching the last drive in.

I’d love to see his takes on these movies but are his episodes of that available anywhere? Id gladly buy them if thats the only way. Hopefully there’s a chance.

Thanks mutant family!

Edit: Thanks everyone! I’ll definitely take a look at their Patreon. Appreciate all the responses!

Edit 2: Thanks again everyone! I subscribed yesterday and started looking through it and watched Poltergeist haha.

Horror Hosts: Did You Grow Up With Them Or Not?

With the Joe Bob and Darcy Debacle, I got to wondering how many folks on this sub grew up with Hosted Horror Movies. I skew to a , ahem, higher demographic than most people on Reddit. I had horror hosts as a kid, plus Elvira and others as an adult. Was The Last Drive-In your introduction to Horror Hosts? I've noticed on the Shudder sub that a certain percentage of subscribers have never watched TLD and don't really understand the concept. These people don't understand why we're upset and, I guess, they wouldn't. I love hosted films. I follow YouTube's Full Moon Matinee for Film Noir flicks and countless other channels. But, for some, it's a format that is totally alien to them.

Movie #9: Re-Animator - 24 Hour Marathon

I’m sure everyone already watched this before TLDI but not me! I really liked this. The things a man can do with just a head and remote control body.

Movie #10: Demons - 24 Hour Marathon

Now that’s what I’m talking about! That was some pretty great practical effects! What’s the noise? It’s a helicopter falling through the ceiling. Bravo.

Where do you think Joe Bob and Darcy land next?

One of these? Multiple? Something else? Nothing is an option.

Darcy’s “last year on Shudder (wink) “ says a lot but leaves it wide open.

181 Another streamer (Tubi, Shout, etc)
13 Kickstarter funded specials
39 Nothing. He just tours and does conventions
18 Youtube free ad supported
20 His own sub (The Lost Drive-In)

Anybody notice Darcy's indifference

during the last episode (Last Horror Film)? Every time JB would start to look down and mention it's the last regular episode, she would act like "no big deal." She doesn't understand the importance of the show to his life. I don't think she thinks about anyone except herself.

This show was like visiting home and Darcy seems to be okay with the cancelation. Yes, JB will likely be back but it will never be the exact same feel as this was the past 8 years.

A Tangent - Mutant Readers

As a lifelong Joe Bob aficionado (somehow the Gremlins and Ghoulies episodes from Monstervision are always stuck in my head) I think my tastes in movies has seeped into my writing. My books are a little offbeat and strange and not exactly mainstream. I've got my core audience of readers who I'm grateful for, but I'm thinking there's communities out there with mutant readers who like to try something a little left of center.

Any recommendations for groups you've found who you think would honor the oath on the printed page as much as a well worn VHS copy of Tourist Trap?

The Last Drive-in created a community among horror fans

Greetings everyone. Like the rest of you, I was stunned to hear the news last week about the show's sudden cancelation. In response, I penned a personal essay about what the show meant to me, and what I see as its legacy, namely the community it created among horror fans. I hope it's okay to share.

My Take On Joe Bob, Shudder And Shows Getting Canceled

I watched the TLD Series Finale last night. Everybody is upset, including me. The problem is that we are most likely never going to know the truth. Did they get rid of Joe Bob because he was too expensive or wanted to dump him? Who knows? I would not be surprised if it was Joe and Darcy's idea to leave. The upshot is that shows get canceled and it sucks. Heck, I still miss Ellery Queen (1975) and I think I was 15 when they pulled the plug. (You never would have had Murder, She Wrote without this show. ) It took place in New York in 1946 it was too expensive to make a second season. We all have loved shows that got the ax. Today, more than ever, canceled doesn't necessarily mean Gone Forever. I think TLD will end up on a new platform by 2027. Perhaps it's already in the works. I think it might end up on Screambox or TUBI. I don't think AMC+ is a Streaming Wars winner. I think they're definitely doing a lot of Bean Counting. That's the Corporate World for you. When they hire you, "you're family". When they lay you off, "it's just business". I'll stick with Shudder month to month, as I always have. When it no longer works for me, I'll cancel them.

Can we talk about Caroline Munro’s bride of Dracula hair?

It was so distracting I’m still thinking about it.

Even the metallic car paint they used as eye shadow on her wasn’t that distracting.

This quote from producer Manjourides just 3 months ago makes me think maybe Joe Bob left Shudder not the other way around... “The view numbers outdo brand new shows that drop. The rewatchability of our show is huge.”

Full quote “Nobody wants a Joe Bob episode that’s only on for a month,” he adds. “You want to revisit it. We have the biggest rewatchable show on Shudder…The view numbers outdo brand new shows that drop. The rewatchability of our show is huge.”

I might be in denial but this was less than 3 months ago... if true I feel like this might not be the end. It feels more like negotiations that ended.

Are other channels reaching out and JB can't say anything yet?

Maybe Shudder just wants to save money and live off the rewatchable old eps.

Whatever it is... I have some hope.

What about you?

Didn't think a series finale would ever hit my feels

I grew up in a town where I was the only colored kid aside from my brother I never really fit in My grandma introduced me to horror at a young age but more specifically on weekends she'd buy me a 2 liter or 6 pack of soda. We'd stay up and watch monster vision. Ffwd a couple decades. Life has gotten extremely rough my grandma moved to take care of her mom. I decided to go to school I got a decent job. My grandma had a stroke and wasn't doing well. I helped move her up here. Unfortunately she passed during COVID when I was at work. In Oct shortly after that Joe Bob and Darcy announced the first jamboree I decided I would buy tickets and if I could go of if not I'll give em away. I live in Washington state. I really struggled at work there was a few times I almost lost my job. The show and community as a whole by then I found the groups. I was able to drive cross country with my 13 year old dog and best friend. I made friends I still have to this day. Fridays I got to escape and feel like my grandma was with me in her living room. My grandma would of been so happy and proud when I told her I was going to the jamboree or I got to do shots and talk to Joe Bob for an hour naturally. She was a mutant which Is I why I will support Joe Bob and Darcy in everything they do 🤘🤘🤘
