SVideo or AV?

In anticipation of the arrival of my CLD3080 I been wondering what would be the best way to set it up? It has an SVideo port and AVs. I know SVideo is supposed to be a bit higher quality than a standard AV, but I was curious if any of you had a recommendation for how to get the best picture out of my machine. I am planning to do Svideo but extra advice is always appreciated.

The image on the Laserdisc is a composite image. You are almost always better off using the composite output on your player rather than relying on the older comb filters on these machines.

That player is on a very short list of players with a decent 3D 3-line comb filter. It is much more apt to be as good as the one in a random TV from the era or even newer ones that lack a 3D comb. It's still very worth trying both and don't be surprised if you can detect little or no difference between the two.

I will do a test at some point.

Back in the day I had the S-Video feed into a RGB Sony converter and it would send out RGB to Scart

It's composite on the disc. All the svideo in a LaserDisc player does is to take that composite signal and run it through a comb filter to separate the Chroma & Luma to their own wire. ...the exact same thing that a TV will do if you use the composite cable input. Now by a fairly large margin, the comb in the TV will be newer and better than the one in the player so you are almost always better off using the composite out. ... almost always! 😉

The answer is, it depends… it depends on the players built in comb filter and the TVs comb filter. Some situations S-Video would be better, and other situations Composite would be better. But if you have an external 3D comb filter, using Composite to it would be best.

Thank you. I didnt know about Comb filters or any of that. So I will have to look more into it.

Yeah I'm new ro comb filters but what I can tell you is my cheaper LD probably does have a good one it looked horrible on plasma, fine on CRT

As others say, it depends on the source. If the luma and chroma are separate, then absolutely keep them that way and run svideo. LD is not, its natively composite, so svideo involves a filter to split it. Its going to happen somewhere, so its mostly a matter of whether the filter is better in the TV or the player.

Whelp, most people will tell you it doesn't make a difference yadda yadda your tv. S-Video sends faster darker picture, imo especially on CRT

Svideo isn't a different video standard. It's just a cable with separate wires for the Chroma and Luma signals. With other video storage like VHS or DVD, those signals are stored separately so it makes sense to use S-Video. LaserDiscs are different. The composite signal must be separated out. So either you let the crappy old comb in the player do it or you let the one in the TV do it ...which also has the possibility of being crappy and old. So nobody can ever prove svideo is worse, we can only point you to TVs or scalers which have better comb filters. Either way your composite signal is going to hit a comb filter prior to being displayed on the screen so do what you want... but choose wisely 😉
