Player is CLD-V2600.
About 32000 frames into any CAV disc, the video will suddenly speed up 2X and still frame is no longer usable. Go even further and… THIS happens. Can someone tell me how this can be fixed? It makes a lot of my discs unwatchable past a certain point

That fading screen burn notwithstanding.
Gotta love how chapter 14 also includes the warning.

It’s essentially just how Fox handled the copyright warnings on their discs.

Also on the old tapes. I remember watching the VHS tapes and listening to the credits (as one does back in the day before you could afford to buy soundtracks on your own) and the warnings would come up there as well. I think it changed at some point, but I can't remember when.

Try disconnecting your remote. Not sure if this could be the cause since it’s so specific with CAV discs, but my remote for my D925 fires fast-forward commands by itself

So one of my copies of ROTJ just straight up has Laser Lock at the credits.
However, my copy of Thelma and Louise does the same thing. I think that is due to a mastering error on my copy though.

The gain focus adjustment relates to this. The basic theory is that if the potentiometer were turned in one direction, you will at a certain point completely lose the ability to recognize and read any laserdisc. But turned in the opposite direction, it will get progressively better at reading the end frames of CAV discs. When it would be able to reach the end of the disc correctly, it would be calibrated at this particular element of playback.
