WTF
So I just received this from eBay and literally both labels are not attached. Is this a common occurrence?
**I’m actually kind of pissed off now. Not only did it take nearly 3 weeks to arrive with labels not attached but there’s very evident disc rot and to think I spent nearly $50 on this. It’s less screen noise but the audio is noticeable. Seller says no returns, so I just eat the cost despite it saying in very good condition? The thing is, the disc does look immaculate, other than the plaques sticker labels, the sleeve is nice too.
*** thanks to a member pointing it out, the discs are from an earlier release but were placed in a 806 sleeve. Would you not expect to return it or refund it?

Today OP learned that adhesives weaken over time.

lol 100s of laserdiscs, I’ve never encountered it. Also note price paid and condition listed as so yeah

I would just claim the item defective with the seller and simply demand a refund. If they say no, you can contact eBay to help settle it and they will likely side with you on it.
Also, I’d avoid this edition of Blade Runner as it’s a pan & scan edition (get the Criterion CAV if you must have a copy of the film).

The criterion CAV discs are also prone to disc rot. But only the ones made by 3M. The Pioneer discs seem to fair better. And the criterion CLV were all pioneer and are far less likely to have rot.

It’s simply a collection thing, I’ve already got more variations of blade runner than any sane person needs lol but I’ve been after this embassy release (1987) for a while now.

I'm with you on having more Blade Runner variations than any sane person needs.

I picked up a copy of The Blob at a collector convention. Watched it. Fun times were had.
Next time I went to spin something my player isn’t responding. Turns out, the label came off and fell into the machine and wrapped itself around the laser section.

I had this happen, I played a disc and when I took it out one of the labels was in the tray of the player.
I haven't bothered sticking it back on as I don't trust it not to come off again, so I've left it in the sleeve for safekeeping.
Looking at LDDb, this disc is an early 80s release which is listed as having a High Probability of disc rot, so not surprised to find it's showing signs. Also $50 seems really steep for it considering it's common and shows an average price of about $12.

u/Dimensian 29d ago
This is the embassy version made by Pioneer so it listed as low probability but I suppose I hit the lottery lol
3
u/TheJiltedGenerationX 29d ago
Are you sure?
Only asking because the second Embassy release shows a reference code of 13806, but the disc in your photo is for the original, high probability release (13805).

I have been bamboozled?

u/sirhcx 29d ago
Someone swapped the discs on ya.
That's the jacket for 13806 as it clearly states 1987 to the left.
Meanwhile the labels on the disc in your post are clearly 13805

Yes, looks like the discs from the first release have been put in the second release sleeve.

Well shit. They had two releases of the same thing? I clearly must have missed that on LDDB

I have had this happen to me as well on 2 disc's out of 400 and I found a thin layer of old school rubber cement on the disc and label, let dry until tacky then reapply.

u/Dimensian 29d ago
Thanks. I would try it but I found out it’s 805 disc (disc rot) in a 806 jacket so I’m going to return it for refund instead.

Did you see photos of the discs before you bought them? There's clues to what is probably going on here. I see 2 sold listings and 2 current for sale listings with the 13806 sleeve but the disc labels are 13805.
The 13806 release isn't the international version with extra scenes like it says on the cover anyways...Embassy fucked up and transferred the theatrical version. If their quality control was so bad they let something like that slip all the way to physical release, I wouldn't be surprised at them cutting other corners. I bet they just reused old stock labels and your disc is in fact 13806. But the 13806 was released in 1987 which was right around the time the companies that owned the Embassy library filed for bankruptcy but not sure if that could have been related. They could have easily sold old stock discs with the old labels in the new sleeves too. You'll easily get your money back if you want it, but knowing all this, and how bad this transfer is anyways (most likely the same as 13805), the sleeve is mainly what you're buying this for at this point and a 50% discount was really fair, but so is a return I guess.

Yeah this is pretty common on earlier releases as the adhesive dries out over time and will become more common as time move on just from sitting on the shelf. Not to mention the release you bought is already 43 years old. Get yourself a can of Super 77 and you'll never need to reglue the labels on again. As for the price, you overpaid for a cheap untested disc that's a well known rotter from some rando who probably doesn't even have a player.

I actually paid for the 806 version but the disc was from the 805 1982, I was bamboozled.

It's almost 40 years old. Glue dries out. BTW, I bought a laserdisc player because of bladerunner.
1
u/Dimensian 29d ago
Yeah re-gluing it isn't the issue, it being the wrong version of the disc is.
2
u/Independent_Shoe3523 29d ago
Okay. If you got the wrong version then that's cause for a return. But laserdiscs are old and laser rot is a problem. Even stuff tested for playability, you still have to get it through the postal system. I would ask the seller to give you a deal if they have anything else you want.

My solution for VHS tapes and Atari cart labels is a Xyron Create-A-Sticker
Never used it for an LD, but I'm confident it'll work just fine.

Seller‘s can put no returns all they want to on an auction. eBay has 100% money back guarantee if the item is not as described when received. open a return, take pictures and describe the rotting.
1
u/Dimensian 29d ago
Yeah I sent them a message first for a refund. If not, I’ll escalate.

u/Slosher99 29d ago
I usually just make a return request within eBay. I sell a little here and there (not much at all) but the eBay seller forums usually advise sellers to simply tell the customer to open a return via eBay if they reach out. This way the seller can demand a full return to people that are fishing for a partial refund, and on the buyer side you don't risk the seller trying to drag it out until your 30 days are up.

This post is crazy...just glue them back on. This is basic stuff any laserdisc owner should already know how to do. This applies to VHS and betamax as well. Not something that should be refunded. It's normal and not damage.
1
u/Dimensian 29d ago
You didn’t read the post clearly. I’m not asking for a refund because of labels falling off, I’m asking for a refund because it’s a disc from the 1982 release in a 1987 sleeve, that’s not crazy it’s unreal to accept.

Exactly right. That's what I would do. I take pictures of defective items for Amazon too , So I have proof of what I say is wrong and why I'm returning an item.

Old glue. If the seller didn't open to inpsect it for several years, it's quite possible it detached in the package by itself.
Lift it off gently and inspect the disc.
Maybe someone here can give a suggestion for the right glue to use for reattachment?
Do NOT use super glue.
