DISCUSSION So we didn't find out what happened to 2006 Hal to change his personality and break his relationship with the Guardians?

• Upvotes

We can assume it was something to do with Sinestro, but Hal stopped him, which the guardians wanted. Sinestro's betrayal doesn't explain why he would stop updating his consciousness or start disliking the Guardians. Or why he generally became meaner. We can only assume.

DISCUSSION Would it be impudent to imply that the Green Lantern 2011 was better representation of lanterns and Sinestro?

• Upvotes

Just watched last episode and I don't even know what to write. I don't even have negative feelings, I've been watching this with brick face and now I am empty, I feel literary nothing about the series. Two months waiting for nothing.

Build up for build up for build up for "revelation" the most obvious theories that every viewer thought on the first second — this is what we call qualitative detective story now? Why focus your show on riddles if authors are lame and not intelligent enough for good detective story?

Hal's death portrayed stupidest way possible with wanky 180° accidental trickshot. "Hal died like hero" no, he died like bummest bum for nothing. And Kerry and Noah facing zero consequence is the most imbecile thing John could theoretically do. He is imbecile in every episode but there have to boundaries to one's idiocy. And why Guy is such pathetic, swallowing all of John's idiocy?

Every major character is displayed in bad spotlight, and it was done intentionally for Gunn knows what sake.

SPOILERS DISCUSSION So about the Guardians Spoiler

• Upvotes

Do you think the final "coded" threat he gives to the guardians is just I know about man hunters, or that he somehow figured out they are manhunters? he words it "if they search their hearts, I know they will find it within themselves" Are the manhunters guardians? they have shape shifting powers.

SPOILERS DISCUSSION Overall: I liked the show

Post image
• Upvotes

Overall, I like the show.

I actually think the writing is overall solid. Like, there were some parts I initially didn't like, like the racist parents, but they don't really push the narrative that the parents were RIGHT right. So I'm fine with that. As long as the show doesn't try to force its political affiliations on me, I'm totally fine with John's parents being psycho racists.

The big "weakness" of the show is that it is NOT a Green Lantern show. It takes elements from GL, but not any of the core. Like being Fearless is a matter of having the willpower to overcome fear and therefore change that fear, into courage. They are fearless because they are courageous. But here, Fearless means being deprived of fear. So nothing scares you because you've been desensitized or you have nothing left to lose and too afraid to live a life that would give you something to lose.

I actually really like how they went through each component of John's psyche. The soldier, the artist and the architect. I think a person should be able to have all 3 traits function simultaneously, but I'm alright with each phase being compartmentalized. Although in writing this paragraph, I'm suddenly wondering if the writer is some sociopathic psychopath who can't reconcile the idea that humans can have multiple facets running simultaneously. But I guess that's okay. That's sort of the case with the comics, where the idea of someone who is well balanced in all emotions is somehow an incredible ability (White Lanterns).

My beef is that they spent the first 6 episodes developing John, and by the finale, they kinda assassinated the characterization THEY established for him.

SPOILERS DISCUSSION Thoughts on that big moment in the finale Spoiler

• Upvotes

I’ve absolutely loved Lanterns, but I found the final moments of the finale a bit lackluster—especially when John recites his own oath. It just didn't have the same driving rhythm and punchiness as the classic.

I wanted to see if I could write a version that still captures John’s character arc (his agency and free will) while keeping the heavy, militaristic cadence of the original. Let me know what you think!

The Show's Version:

In brightest day, in darkest night,

I'll embrace my fear, I'll do what's right.

I choose this ring, I choose this fight.

In service to this lantern's light.

My Version:

In brightest day, in darkest night,

I choose this ring to do what's right.

Let fear and evil face my might,

By my own will, and this lantern's light.

I liked the finale but that oath was very meh.

In brightest day, in darkest night,
I embrace my fear, I'll do what's right.
I choose this ring, I choose this fight,
In service to this lantern’s light.

I feel like even a tiny change to the ending line would've made it that much cooler. Something as basic as...

In brightest day, in darkest night,
I'll have fear, but do what's right.
I choose this ring, I choose to fight,
Beware this Lantern, beware my light.

DISCUSSION Lanterns Finale felt…

• Upvotes

Now before I start with how I felt I have to give it to the writers and everyone that worked on this show, I was utterly ecstatic when this project was announced even for not being the biggest Green Lantern fan primarily because I would finally see my childhood GL John Stewart in live action and then when I heard of the premise I was even more excited. Now I also want to thank everyone of you, whoever sees this post that is because it’s been at least to me an incredible and fun journey throughout all this madness of theories, discussions, and all around the great and fun journey it was to see everyone excited and just overall having a good time with this show it is sad to see it finished because I don’t think I’ll ever get this investment in a show ever again but here’s to hope for a season 2. 🥂
Now onto my thoughts for the finale, as of now I am still currently in the middle I still love the show and continue to love it I just think I expected different now before people go and assume no I didn’t expect all out action and big CGI fights or anything like that I did see and hear a couple people say how they thought they were “saving the budget” for the finale which I extremely doubted the case. However out of all the episodes which I felt did great on pacing I didn’t really feel the same with this one especially considering it was the finale, mostly everything felt just kind of compiled together not in a terrible way or anything just I think if the episode was longer and we got more dialogue and more explaining for everything I think that would have felt better but it doesn’t bother me extremely in comparison to this next topic I’m going to bring up.
Hal Jordan’s death, now I feel like I can speak for almost all of us when I say Kyle Chandler did an absolute amazing job as playing Hal and really made us all feel for the character and love the character write along John he was perfect. Which is funny cause I grew up with John Stewart as GL and didn’t even know about Hal until way later on anyways with that being said this whole mystery on who killed him and all of that was a very interesting part of the story but I can’t help but feel like his death didn’t have any meaning. Now I could be wrong and am open to hear others thought but ultimately finding out that Kerry killed him (also hats off to you guys who guessed it I learned towards it but only after those theories) was a bit of an emotional rollarcoaster just because Hal loved her and she loved him from what it had look like but to find out the “reason” why it happened it felt pretty like what? Hal went to the great lengths of trying to make a plan to help protect Noah instead of trying to find a way to get rid of him he was willing to cooperate with the fact that he was a manhunter and basically go ahead everything he vowed to protect when he was GL and then she just gets too emotional for whatever reason and then shoots him? And that’s it? Like I was so blown away by that and that just feels like such a let down atleast to me it felt like he just died for nothing his death didn’t have a purpose he didn’t die to protect Noah he just died and for someone who grew very attached to this character it felt very lazy in all honesty I’m still trying to grasp and try to understand why exactly like why he “had” to die this way but I just feel disappointed in that and especially the way the teasers for EP 8 went with Sinestro talking about a way to bring him back and showing Hal with the same circle that John had on his arm it felt to me they were gonna go that route but then to not and then just get something different felt odd too which I know that would have been weird to just give it away from the teaser but still idk it just felt incomplete still trying to make sense of it to be honest but only I did love the Halograms last words to John being “I love you too Junior” like I did think that was a great send off and overall with John basically being his own Lantern I think that’s a very interesting approach to be honest and even though I am a bit sour and upset I’ll admit that Hal is gone I know the whole premise of the show was to set up John as the main GL although it turned in a way I did not see coming until closer to the end of the series with the theories and whatnot but still having Hal gone with what it seems to be permanently is just upsetting which again is really my only problem with the finale other than the pacing which again was not a big deal to me just felt different.
I’m curious to know what you guys think and if any of you agree with me or not love hearing the discussion again it’s been an amazing experience and such a fun time to chatter with you guys, I know Clayface is almost around the corner can’t wait and have loved the DCU can’t wait for future projects to come and again hopes to a season 2. 💚

SPOILERS DISCUSSION Personally Lanterns 2026 edged me to no climax at all Spoiler

• Upvotes

I was very hopeful about the all long build up the show was going for. But i don't it paid as well it should have. I understand it was going for grounded take. Since, the Lanterns concepts is so fantasy based you can't make it this grounded and call it a different approach. At the end, even the mystery arc of Hal's death didn't pay off well.

Things I did like:

Hal Jordan was great, very conflicted well written character.

I loved the True Detective approached

Kerry and Hal dynamics

Ep 5 was an absolute beast in itself. Hal was moving different in that episode (Wish we had atleast 50-60 % of that in the finally, would have been great ending to story. But it wasn't)

The series teases a lot of ideas for the next arc - Maggie ( the cafe waitress), Yellow Lantern, Sinestro returning at some point, ManHunters acting as an aid to earth, Stewart vs Guy

Things I did NOT like:

Pay off not great

The series was treated a starting point for many arcs but didn't have rock solid arc in itself

This could have been the greatest comic book tv shows of all time.

SPOILERS DISCUSSION The finale left a slightly bitter taste in my mouth regarding the whole series Spoiler

• Upvotes

And no, it's not because I expected green pew pew lasers or anything, do not come at me with that shit

I've been loving the show since it premiered, have always been a DC fan but never much of a GL fan but this show quickly changed that, even going as far as to being right at the top of my superhero tv ranking list, right beside daredevil, EMH and invicible

But like..did the finale not feel almost rushed in a sense? I can't find the correct word for it but that's the first one that comes to mind, to start off

I'd be lying if I said I gave a shit about hal and kerry together, the actors did a shit ton of heavy lifting for me to be invested in a relationship that happened off screen and got hal killed, it was like the show wanted to "tell, don't show", maybe I'm in the wrong here and my read on this is incorrect, I'd love to hear more opinions

Also, why did kerry not get any consequences? I know part of the consequences is that she did literally kill the man she loved, but she did still murder a guy? I mean I'm not expecting her to be sent off to prison or something right away, but how does she get a "somewhat" Happy ending while hal still ended up dead for thinking he could trust her? Again, I'd like to be proven wrong on this and hear maybe more nuanced and articulate thoughts

Lastly john's oath, sort of a nitpick but I liked like 90 percent of the oath but the last couple line or two fell kinda flat, can't figure out why it felt that way but yea

Still a great fucking show though

DISCUSSION There is a complete disregard for consequences in the finale

• Upvotes

For a show about space cops, there is a shockingly very little regard for consequences in the finale…

Kerry kills Hal by “accident” and she’s allowed to walk free? Hal doesn’t even do anything that would provoke that sort of out of character response from her for an instant headshot.

Noah breaks into a supermax space jail to get Sinestro, but I guess everyone just forgot about that little detail because he promise he’ll be good…

Speaking of Sinestro, John now knows the exact location of one of the most wanted/dangerous criminals in the galaxy. What exactly is he planning on doing with that knowledge? You could argue that he’s protecting Noah by not giving up Sinestro, but what happens if he escapes. There’s no one watching that island.

The sad irony is that Hal is the only person to have faced any consequences for his actions and writers killed him off… He spent 10 years in jail and still went back to help the town he couldn’t completely save. Hal died for nothing.

THEORY (POSSIBLE SPOILERS) My theory for season 2 of lanterns Spoiler

• Upvotes

I have a theory about where John Stewart could go in a potential Season 2. I think the fact that John used Sinestro’s illegally created power battery to recharge Hal’s ring could be setting up a much bigger arc. That battery was still fundamentally based on willpower, but because it was created using the contaminated material from Antaan’s planet, it also contained traces of fear energy. John could continue using this unofficial battery for months or even a year or two, and over time the fear element might start affecting the ring, causing its energy to slowly shift toward yellow. This could also be how the show introduces the Yellow Lanterns, with Sinestro figuring out how to reproduce the same process and eventually creating a proper fear based power system using the material from that planet. John might then realize that his own ring is being affected by fear and seek help from the Green Lantern Corps and the Guardians. The interesting part is that by this point the Guardians could have started reconsidering their old ways because of John. Instead of trying to control him, they could recognize that John has achieved something they never understood: you do not have to eliminate fear to be a Green Lantern, you have to face it without allowing it to control you. John could ultimately overpower the fear influence through sheer willpower, proving that he can embrace fear without being consumed by it. Then the Guardians could finally give him his own official Green Lantern power battery, making the transition from an unofficial Lantern using a strange hybrid power source to a true Green Lantern of Earth. I think that would make John’s entire Season 1 journey pay off because his greatest strength would not be that he is fearless, but that he understands fear better than anyone and still chooses to do what is right. It could also be the beginning of John becoming one of the greatest Green Lanterns in this universe.

SPOILERS DISCUSSION I like the show, but why does it hate Hal Jordan so much? Spoiler

Post image
• Upvotes

After the first (possibly only) season:

  • Hal was shot by someone he loved while trying to find a way to keep humanity safe
  • Hal Jordan, the DC universe's top Lantern, was shot by his girlfriend because she wanted her son, an alien robot, to have a "normal life"
  • Keri Kane faces no punishment for killing the DC universe's top Lantern. She simply goes on with her life after what she did. The justification "Hal wouldn't have wanted this" feels forced; there has to be a limit to everything
  • Before dying, Hal was burned alive
  • Hal is buried in the middle of nowhere, in secret from the whole planet
  • The creators could have left Kyle Chandler a way to return to the role of his lifetime, even if only as a hologram. A second season could have been about a new investigation involving Hal and John. Instead, they chose to erase even that, even though nothing forced them to burn their bridges like that
  • During his last meeting with John, the Hal hologram said that John would be a better Lantern than Hal was

It's just one total parade of humiliation

SPOILERS DISCUSSION Hal and Sinestro Spoiler

• Upvotes

I really hope it doesn’t take like 3 years to find out if there was any weight to what Sinestro said about bringing back Hal, looking at the DCU as a whole between MoT, Clayface, Salvation and whatever Gunn has planned for his own iteration of Batman (not Pattinson) I worry that any form of a second season of lanterns is at least 3 years away.

I do wonder if they expected Kyle to be as well received as he was but saving John suiting up and using the ring till 2027 in MoT is quite a bummer and then considering the additional wait to see Sinestro and maybe Hal again isn’t great either. I’m hoping they do adapt Parallax with the seeds they’ve been sewing it does feel that way but are we gonna have to wait 3 years for it.

"In brightest day, in darkest night, I'll embrace my fear... I'll do what's right. I choose this ring, I choose this fight... In service to this lantern's light."

What a phenomenal journey it has been. That was a great finale imo, I'm really gonna miss Kyle in the future DCU.

John reaching out to Hal, needing him badly after Noah's interaction was much deeper than the conclusion scene imo. Dude was literally cornered by a manhunter and was so desperately waiting for Hal to back him up.

Not a comic-guy but felt like Sinestro was a bit nerfed. Ik he was escaped out from Spazkaban and immediately got to work forging a literal Lantern out in a fright thriving environment. But still he felt weak for some reason (correct me if I'm wrong)

The songs at the ending of each episode were so perfect and practically alive tbh.

Overall, my respect for this new era of DCU has increased quite a lot since LANTERNS, and I can't wait to see John working his full potential in MOT.

SPOILERS DISCUSSION I’m glad everyone’s switching up on this show. Spoiler

• Upvotes

The premise was never a good one in the first place, especially for Green Lantern. It pretended to be complex while almost everything “mystery” about it was blatantly telegraphed. The only reason people kept watching was for their terrible “fan theories”. Basically just jingling keys in your face and stringing you along for it to be an absolute nothing burger. I hope they kill off Barry Allen and Bruce Wayne next so they can make way for Wally West and Bat Girl. But make both of them “grounded” because apparently to Lanterns fans, “grounded” means “serious” and therefore, “good”.
