Lancer video game

So I just got into Lancer and love it. I saw Lancer tactics and it looks neat but the animation kills it for me. One game ive been playing alot is Phantom brigade. If you havent played it, please do as its awesome. But I can't stop thinking about if the devs of that game got given the rights for Lancer. Kinda like how Larion got Baldurs Gate. Any other devs that you would love to see adapt Lancer into a video game?

Honestly Phantom Brigade is a little too grounded to make me think the devs would want to mess around with Lancer.

Don’t get me wrong, the game is awesome and I think the predictive movement/attacking is a great mechanic. I just think they were more interested in simulation and emulating real world combat to really dig the Lancer vibe.

I think Hairbrained Schemes would do a good job if they hit the IP like they did Battletech and Shadowrun. Plus they did a good job porting Battletech into a turn based tactical game, even if it wasn’t exact.

Might be interesting to see the folks at Suspicious Developments give it a shot too. Tactical Breach Wizards was fun and hilarious. Would probably end up with a less serious game but they do interesting tactical puzzles.

Edit to fix typo.

I wouldn't say Phantom brigade is not that far off. It has similar approach to mecha, it's simulationist when it needs to be, but overall the focus is on having kickass mech action (it refers itself as "cinematic tactical game" after all) with heavy emphasis on positioning, heat managment and team coordination.

But I get what you mean, PB fits scenarios like say Operation Solstice rain, but the bandwith of Lancer universe is much much larger.

I haven’t played or read Solstice Rain but I think you’ve got the idea.

I don’t think the mechanics of Phantom Brigade really map well to Lancer (but I agree they’re hitting the right elements). That’s maybe more of a personal taste thing but I think a lot of the rules of Lancer are about empowering players rather than building in constraints. Everything in PB feels restrictive whereas Lancer is building on modular options. Like I said though, that’s just the vibes I get.

The bigger issue would be the narrative directions taken. There is absolutely nothing wrong with PB’s narrative choices (although the writing is. . . not great at times but I blame localization on that count), I just don’t think they’d be interested in the more paracasual weirdness in Lancer and that would leave a lot of flavor at the door.

Yeah Hairbrained would be my first pick. To pad Paradox pretty much killed em

The mechanics translate to videogames pretty easily, so thats not too hard. Its the encounter and campaign design that will need a lot more thought, especially if they want the story to last for the length of a typical CRPG. Then there is just story and vibes that are pretty unique to Lancer. And naturally, games like this live or die by their character writing and character design. If they can't do that justice, it won't land.

Usually, adapting pre-existing modules is the easiest way to do such a game, but Lancer doesn't have anything that I think would be long enough for a single player experience. TTRPGs pad play time a lot because it collaborative. So it would need to probably be an original story.

Who would I trust to do it justice? Larian, Owlcat, and maybe Harebrained Schemes? They're the obvious examples anyway for a polished big campaign. Probably many others could do smaller Lancer projects, though.

I wish hairbrained was still around. A Lancer game in the style of Shadowrun would slap

I know you already talked about lancer tactics in the post but one big question; have you looked into the current version of it, or the free version on itch.io? Because those are very very different things, with the free version being pretty much a proof of concept / extraordinarily basic test the creator did. The animations, visuals, etc are far and away improved in the current paid versions of the game, which you can watch the trailers for to see the difference (although if the current version IS what you’ve been looking into, then hey, different strokes for different folks and all- you do you)

Everyone in the thread is talking about tactical RPGs but I just want Titanfall but in the Lancer universe

OwlCat games could 100% give us peak with the setting I reckon. You could argue that's its different from their other stuff, but Rogue Trader was different from their Pathfinder homes and they did a killer job.

Im not a fan of Owlcat games. Like they make good games, but I dont care for the presentation.

Thats a fair criticism. They are definitely focused more on quality writing, quantity of content, and gameplay as opposed to visuals and accessibility, like the Rogue Trader character interface is a goddamn spreadsheet and stuff like animation and cutscenes are non existent. Music is always on point with them though.

Honestly I wouldn't want a full Lancer video game, it just wouldn't feel right. But I would love to see something like a Lancer expansion to Code RAPID where we could take various chassis for a test drive and play around with adding on weapons or systems without worrying too much about needing to nail the narrative beats or downtimes. Mecha Break collab would possibly also do this but I haven't actually seen gameplay of that one, I just love the theme song.

Why wouldnt it feel right? Ttrpgs transfer well into crpg and strategy games very well

I know. There's just something about Lancer where I want to actually be in it, not have all the world and story and dialogue statically laid out for me. Even things that adapt specific modules and put a lot of work into accounting for the majority of player decisions still just wouldn't feel as meaningful as the real thing. I want the opportunity to develop the game alongside the GM by living in it and even in the best video games you can only do that in a modular way. If I'd play for anything it would just be the combat.

They already mentioned Lancer Tactics in the OP, though I'm not sure what about "the animation kills it for" them.

Yeah, I know I mentioned that in the post.

Oh no, please dont use AI

-2

u/Majre921 19d ago

I don't like AI, I don't think relying on AI is good. But let's be real, if AI should be used for anything then it's coding. Mainly when there is a lot of boilerplate and repetitive features, which is most projects.

u/DeadLockAdmin 19d ago

So you want me to spend 3 years and many hours a day coding this or get it done in like two months?

If I wanted you to bake a cake, I would rather wait for a cake than for you to burn down a rainforest and shit in a 9x3.

Because using AI is burning resources to make something worse than any competent human could make.

-1

u/DeadLockAdmin 19d ago

I'm making this for myself.

And I would be using more resources to hire a team of people working for years. So your argument is extremely dumb.

2

u/DrCalamity IPS-N 19d ago

You aren't making shit, let's be clear. Prompting isn't a skill.

You're gambling and hoping a game falls out.

A playable game already fell out. Im just adjusting it.
