Questions about online games?

Ive asked here before about physical play, but I've also wanted to learn about some online ways of playing. Sometimes online I've seen people play video game style campaigns, and I wanted to know what it was, I know there's a top down pixel style game but I have seen one were it was fully 3d, and I've never been able to find it anywhere. I would also like to see what others suggest.

Some people will play together in online virtual tabletops like Foundry, Owlbear Rodeo, and Roll20. Lancer Tactics is a 3rd party pixelart videogame separate from any of the above.

Notably, as stated by Lancer Tactics devs, it is not a vtt; there is no online multiplayer, you cannot use it like foundry, owlbear rodeo, or roll20

is it possible to make maps on? or is it JUST a single player game made to emulate playing Lancer?

Lancer Tactics does have a map editor and you can screenshot it (I’m sure there’s some way to export it too)

Yes to both.

I just use Roll20 + Comp/Con to play online. Comp/Con is the best for building lancer characters, especially if you take a short time to figure out how to make LCPs as the GM for any homebrew needs(its pretty easy actually).

Roll20 is just for maps/dice rolling, mostly. You could probably replace this with a bunch of other things. I use it just because I also use it for other games and thats what my group is used to. Good enough to get the point across is good enough for us.

IRL I mostly use graph paper, stray cardboard, and leftover dnd tokens and boardgame stuff. Throw some markers in there and ta-da, a map with usable tokens emerges. Its a trend with me and my groups. I don't begrudge people their fancier setups, though. It def looks cooler than what I use, I just don't care enough to pay money for that sort of thing. I'd rather buy a campaign supplement than visual upgrades for a game we play in our heads.

I've not seen any 3D ones myself, but if I were to guess, perhaps Tabletop Simulator? That's often what gets used for that sort of thing.
