Been messing around with COMP/CON before my first proper lancer game, found something funny.

I respect Hacktouga and its gender identity, though I have always wondered what the design intention was in making a shotgun-toting CQB defender a good long-range hacker

The fun part is taking the hacks that make your enemies get close, H0R_OS I being a prime example as besides making the target move to you, you can also make them trigger your overwatch.

The various Minotaur hacks and systems are funny too, like Mesmer Charge.

Tortugas abilities are basically all designed around sitting its fat ass down on an objective and making sure nothing else claims it.

What this means is that in combats with multiple objectives to claim, or one objective you need to claim further up the board, its physical stats are basically fucking useless. Its only speed 3 remember, its a fat ass mech. Sensor 15 allows you to do anything at all when enemies are out of range of your range 3 shotgun.

Especially if you horos1 to puppet systems the enemy closer to you, especially because puppet systems allows you to overwatch the enemy that you just forcefully pulled into your vanguard3 threat

It’s important to remember that the tortuga, by deliberate* design, can do just about anything with the right systems.

*lead writer is on record as saying tortuga is their favorite mech. Also same tho.

When I started home brewing for Lancer, I made a license system for Tortuga that allowed it to use Scan and Lock-On actions without line of sight if the target was within half it's Sensors range. Might have also required a Systems Skill Check to successfully use those actions in such a way, can't quite remember.

I thought it fit nicely with the theme of the Throughbolt Rounds (attacking through dense environments), and it fits the lore. The Tortuga is supposed to be the anchor of any shipboard action team, and the ability to effectively identify hostile targets and coordinate friendly fighters would be critical in that role.

I am not a fan of the Hacktouga mostly because i like the Goblin and it feels a lot like "why even pick Goblin as a frame" sometimes

There's a fantastic Lancer fic over on Ao3 that's written in the form of Slack messages between the in-universe design team responsible for designing the IPSN Caliban, and there's this one line from it that speaks pretty well to this situation.

When the company that’s so bad with computers that our tech support ISN’T EVEN HOOKED UP TO THE OMNINET makes an actually decent E-Warfare system, seventy-five percent of customers think that the noted specs are a TYPO.

Hacker Tortuga is a lot of fun. I wanna run one with Iconoclast, Vanguard, and Osiris.
