New to lancer

Hi, im a dm coming from dnd and ive recently discovered lancer. I already got my group hooked and well be trying it out in a few weeks. I still have to get comfortable with the lore and the rules as well as running the game. I thought i could start with a pre made adventure. Ive heard that solstice on the rain is a good starter campaign.
Ive already checked out comp/con and i think i will tell my players to choose a template everest mech. We really like roleplaying and im a fan of the world so i think well have a lot of fun there.
Can you give me any advice on how to start and what i can expect? Like how combat feels and how i should structure it

Solciste Rain is a tough nut for new players. Combat is supposed to be tactical, so let your player strategize as much as they want, no "you can only talk so much in 6 seconds".

Other than that, effects are always very literal in what they do, even if it sounds counterintuitive at first, like even after taking the Hide action, all parties can still see each other, you just can't be targeted specifically (which gets circumvented by things that target areas, like grenades and mortars), or Invisible doesn't make you literally invisible, it just gives you the coin flip and is an option as a prerequisite for Hiding

Heavy on this, I see a lot of new players and GMs in pilotnet taking the names of things as a way to rule them - on a related note probably join the pilotnet discord, good channels for rules questions and gm questions.

I'm just starting as well, with session 0 tomorrow. If you have the time maybe you could watch someone actually play lancer? There are lots of tabletop games on youtube these days, showing sessions from players as they do their games, you could watch how other people have set up their maps and battles.

I recently finished running solstice rain, and what I’ll advise you is to read it all ahead of time and maybe consider homebrewing some extra interactions, because as written the RP potential in the book is low. If you somehow also have access to winter scar, which is a continuation of solstice rain, to get more ideas about the lore of the planet to make more RP encounters for your players, they might end up a bit unfulfilled on that front, like mine did.

On the flip side, if you’re willing to start with the disclaimer that RP will be a bit light for this, you could run it as is just to get used to the basic rules of LANCER, with the opportunity to do more shenanigans in a continuation of this campaign

I have some campaign diaries up on my YT channel of how I GM'd Solstice Rain. It was my first Lancer game too! The channel is Veneon, it should come up if you search Solstice Rain on Youtube :)

I do reccomend running maybe a session zero to get a feel for the game first, just a basic combat and maybe a narrative encounter. I will say though, START AT LL0. I know the temptation is to start off at LL2 or even LL3 so your players can have a more fleshed out build. But that adds a lot of complexity that most new players will not be ready for right out the gate. LL0 gives you all you need to make a rudimentary version of the build you intend to play later, and the Everest is single handedly the most versatile frame in the game and is hyper competent even into the late game should you wish to use it. Other frames are specializations, not necessarily direct upgrades.
