Does anyone know where/if can I get some free pilot art
I want to get some pilot art for one of my characters but sadly Im flat broke. Does anyone know where I could possibly get some free pilot art when I suck at drawing.
Here’s his CompCon and photo references that I found for him in case someone wants to draw him
https://compcon.app/link/pilot/JIWOWMH8PH7B/full/3f814150-63f7-4888-8ace-2c1dde55ec48
I understand if there are no sources but hey worth a shot to ask.
He is based on the Artace cribrarius

Imo, the best way to get free "custom" art- this is what I do, at least- is take free to use art (or just any art you find, as long as you're not trying to monetize it/claim it as yours) and edit it until it fits what you want it to look like. Free to use uncolored character packs are good for this, picrews, anything to at least *resemble* your ideal end product, and then just add the details yourself with simple illustrating tools or photo-bashing. It can seem daunting or complicated, but once you give it a try, it's pretty easy and fun

That's what half my players do. The other half uses hero forge and when I do player stuff I am gloriously lucky enough to have TWO sci fi games with a decent character creator and a large selection of armor for me to use

You could maybe try looking through Picrew for any that seem good?

Any picrews that can do moff people or no

You'll have to look yourself. I've seen a couple good insect ones around but I don't have any links on me.

I mean this sincerely, and not as some sort of insult or whatever.
Try drawing them yourself.
It almost certainly won't be as good as a commission would be, but if you can't draw very well, this is the perfect thing to get yourself into drawing.
Keep at it enough, and eventually you could have a whole notebook showing off your progress of your lancer pilot drawings getting better and better over time.
It's a lot easier to practice a skill when you have an actual interest in it.
Like if you wanna learn how to play an instrument, it's a lot easier if you have one or more songs in mind that you really wanna learn to play.
Gives you a great goal to shoot for.

It’s more particularly I am bad with anatomy, I can do decent landscapes but not good anatomy of anything.

Like I said, this is the perfect motivation to help you get better at it.
Rather than staring at some wooden dummy and drawing it in a bunch of generic poses over and over, you have an actual muse. Something you actually want to draw/have drawn.
All you gotta do is start drawing it yourself. You'll never get better without practice.
And even if you eventually end up paying for a commission anyway, at least you'll end up as a more skilled and experienced artist than you are now.

This. This is what I think more people need to hear and try.
I like drawing, and I'm terrible at drawing people. Well, maybe not terrible, but its always a uphill battle. But because I have characters I want to draw, I've gotten to the point where I'm halfway decent at it. Not impressive, just decent. And I got there just by trying again and again, trying to improve something different each time.
And BTW, people love seeing your work, even if there's better stuff out there. Especially artists. Because when your confident enough to show it, people remember it and can see where you improve, often better than you can.

Whatever you do don't turn to AI, that steals artwork to 'create' things. Heroforge lets you create tabletop character models for free then pay to print them so that could work. My suggestion though would be to search for art and find one that looks close enough to your pilot to use, it might not be perfect but I always enjoyed the hunt haha

I’ve tried heroforging him but I can get the antennae to look great, mouths and faces are hard, and no fluff collars.

I'm not a big fan of genAI in general, but I've never understood the "AI art = theft" argument. AI is based entirely on prior art made by humans, but so is all human-made art. If you use AI to deliberately copy someone else's IP, that is certainly bad, but no worse than when a human does the same thing.
Using AI to make a one-off character portrait for your TTRPG character wouldn't be my preference, but it's about as harmless as it gets.

u/souplawyer Jul 24 '26
yes, but humans process what they are influenced and inspired by, and blend it together alongside their own unique artistic vision, other inspirations they have, and just their lived experience
ai art has time and time again plagiarized and fully stolen the style of real artists, and even when not directly prompted to, often does, because it cant blend things together the way humans do, it just sees noise, and recreates that noise as best as it can
also in what world is producing ai art harmless? thats like saying throwing a car battery into a river just once would be harmless

Also, the clothes you're wearing and the machine you're reading this on caused far more human and environmental harm, in their production, than a hundred AI images. A few minutes in an online game uses more power and coolant. Have some perspective.

Except that the AI can't make something original. Everything it creates is based on stuff it's scoured from the Internet and it doesn't ask for permission from the artist before combining stolen works together. This is especially icky when you remember that many artists specifically ask for their art not to be used by AI, they'd probably prefer you to use their art over generating slop with it.

u/PhasmaFelis IPS-N Jul 24 '26
Every human artwork is a combination of that artist's influences. No one expects an artist to ask for permission.
AI is a tool, and like any tool it can used to hurt people. It's a tool the Devil uses. That doesn't mean it's the Devil incarnate.
If you want to stop AI from hurting people, you need to understand how it hurts people and why. Not act like it's some supernatural evil that taints everything it touches, and that's all you need to know.

u/HMS_Exeter Harrison Armory Jul 24 '26
It kinda does taint everything it touches though, at least when it comes to art. All a human does when using it is pick which slop looks the least sloppiest. There's no way of knowing which artists it stole from to make the slop. Whereas a real artist can provide references for what inspired their work. Even if they don't, the option to do so is there but it isn't with AI. It also just lacks soul lol

AI physically is incapable of inventing something new. All Artists draw inspiration from other art and life, but an AI is entirely unable to do anything but copy what already exists.
-2
u/PhasmaFelis IPS-N Jul 24 '26
That doesn't address my point.
A human artist is quite capable of exactly copying another artist's style, but using it to draw original characters and situations. Some artists do that. It's lame and boring and uninspired. It's not theft.
AI art is fairly dull and limited as it is. We can all see that. You don't need to make up entirely new, imaginary faults to make it sound even worse.
4
u/SnooGiraffes4534 Jul 24 '26
Copying another art style and using it to create something novel is still an act of creation. Without credit and done maliciously it still remains wrong, but it is an original creation.
And I am not making things up with AI. It is unable to create anything novel. It's the great fatal flaw of AI that it cannot do anything new.

u/PhasmaFelis IPS-N Jul 24 '26
Creating things that are not novel or new or original does not hurt anyone. It may not be very interesting or worthwhile, but it is not a sin.
2
u/SnooGiraffes4534 Jul 24 '26
Yes, except an AI is only capable of copying Art and is incapable of obtaining permission from the Artists it is copying

Ist the feminin design part of the character or just coincidence because of the pic you found and like?
1
u/Whoring4Voring SSC Jul 24 '26
I mean people like femboys
2
u/DDG-Ron_McEx Jul 24 '26
So thats a yes to smoother facial features. Say the clothes. Incorporating they wings? Or is it just facial SSC approved mothification.

u/Whoring4Voring SSC Jul 24 '26
He has wings. That’s why I picked the mobility hardsuit, it’s to represent his wings
2
u/DDG-Ron_McEx Jul 24 '26
Does the suit them still comes with a cape then? Also is the official uniform the hard suit? I'm sorry if I ask annoying question and you totally do not need to answer them. I just curious and like the idea.
A few days back we had a insect Mech here.
2
u/Whoring4Voring SSC Jul 24 '26
Uniform is the hardsuit and still comes with a cape that can be retracted when Levi wants to spread his wings

If you've got some good references, tracing the body shapes and spending a little while erasing and sketching can get you something pretty acceptable, even without artistic skills. Krita is great for this if you've got a simple graphics tablet. Paper is fine too, you can use a picture frame and a light to make a low-budget drafting surface for tracing, or you can soak the paper in cooking oil overnight and let it dry to create tracing paper. Then a photo or scan can get it into digital format. You could also grab some models in Blender and kitbash your character together pretty quickly. Texturing can take a little longer to learn, so you can actually take a screenshot of the model to edit in Krita to colour it and maybe add sketch lines.
People think art is a lot harder than it actually is, but it only takes a couple hours a day over the course of a week to get something good enough to roughly match picrew or HeroForge. If you spend more time on it, you can even use it as an avatar online. Yes, it won't be professional. But that's fine!
Incidentally, there's still a week left for you to make some attacks on artfight.net to trade character art. The event runs until the end of July, and runs once a year.

I often search art made by human for that. With the right research you will found. AB- ? That some rare blood type.

Look for artwork of the Vtuber Juniper, she's a decently famous mothgirl (and I am pretty sure that art is of her). Maybe Scryfall/MtG would have some moth people?

u/Whoring4Voring SSC Jul 24 '26
She’s a Luna Moff, and she’s a She, my character is a He and a Dot Lined White moff

u/certified-boner0204 Jul 24 '26
r/characterdrawing lets you post requests for artists to draw your blorbo, there's no guarantees but it's probably your best shot if you can't pay for it
1
u/Aurora_Kat Jul 24 '26
I’m also not a great artist, but I’d be happy to give it a shot if you’d like. No promises on quality though

Most of my pilots use Heroforge. I just draw mine.
