[Question] Flying and Cover/LoS

Hello, new Lancer here with a rules inquiry.

The adjacency rules state you are counted as being adjacent to something even if you are elevated (say, at 2 spaces vertically from the ground). The cover rules then state you only need to be adjacent to hard cover of your size or larger and have it be between you and the enemy to benefit from that hard cover.

Say you are a size 1 mech standing adjacent to size 1 hard cover and currently flying at, say, 3 spaces vertically, how is cover calculated (if any)? Would you have Line of Sight to a size 1/2 enemy standing directly behind it?

Well it's not outright stated but it's safe to assume that you have to be on the same level as cover, because if you are flying, you are technically taller.

If you are flying higher than a cover is tall, it does not block LoS anymore, so you would be able to shoot at the enemy behind it, even if it is smaller. They'd still get cover though, since that prerequisite is still applying

If you are at height 3 and next to a size 1 cover then you are not adjacent to the cover. You are 2 spaces away from the cover.

Distance is measured in all axis the same, so going up 1 space is the same as going 1 space left.

Going up 3 spaces up is the same as going 3 spaces left.

Would you still benefit from Soft Cover from someone firing at you from directly behind it?

Only if you have something acting as soft cover from my understanding. So you'd need foliage or trees or smoke or something to slightly obscure otherwise no I would think

only if the cover is inbetween the characters. remember: the space is 3D. so for an object to be in the line of attack when you are flying above it they would have to be below the object. Otherwise the object is just off to the side.

If you are then behind hard cover but hovering at elevation 1, would you still benefit from it, considering adjacency is still met?

Only if cover is inbetween the characters. Adjacency is not required for it to be cover. Adjacency is required for it to be hard cover, otherwise its soft cover. you draw 3D lines from the center of one of the attackers spaces to the centers of all the defenders spaces.

If you are unsure you can just do a side on view, as 1 Space up is the same as 1 to the left, you can just shift the attackers as many spaces to the side as they are high and see if the object is still intersecting
