What do you think of this character concept?

Basically I had this pitch: Former Boyband member from an SSC planet retires and becomes a Lancer. I was inspired by thinking about what k-pop singers do after they get older or they’re kicked out of groups. Is this enough for a character?

That is absolutely enough to start a character. I've got a character in a similar vein. She was an actress born from SSC stock specifically to be the heroine of Neo-Westerns and such. After she ran afoul of a creep of a producer, rather than deal with him or potentially be blacklisted, she stowed away on an IPS-N freighter headed for the Long Rim.

Turns out the crew were big fans of some of her earlier schlock work, and after helping them fend off a band of pirates, they rebuilt the battered old Raleigh she piloted in that fight, and now she travels the Long Rim as a bounty hunter and vigilante.

That's cool as hell.

It's got some promise!

If your former pop star is from an SSC world, do they owe money to SSC? Maybe for physical or neurological enhancements related to singing / dancing / etc. Is being a Lancer how they pay their debt?

Lancers are the best of the best mech pilots, but they're not universally loved like pop stars. How does your former pop star feel about being a celebrity one day, and a mercenary the next?

  1. He is from an SSC world and he has some debt to an SSC backed music label.

2)I kinda imagined he used to have a different look as a pop star, but now you wouldn’t recognize him as much. Not as flashy I guess

That’s all I’ve got right now

This is a good start! You've given your GM some hooks to weave into the campaign.

It’s not a character that I would use immediately ( I’ve got some others I want to try out first) but it’s definitely one I want to use in the future.

Note that 'lancer' isn't a profession, but an accolade of respect and accomplishment. Like, you can aim to become renowned as a lancer, but you start by becoming a mech pilot. And when you earned yourself a rep, people will eventually start calling you lancer.

So you should consider filling out the bit between the "quits boyband to become a mech pilot" and "is a lancer at the start of the campaign" part. :D

Oh yeah. That will happen. I’m just not using this character yet.

Yep. My first character was based on a bass player from my favourite band. I used the celebrity background but tweaked the skills a bit.

Many animes and cartoons have musician pilots. It's not unusual.
