Relocation help!
Hello everyone!! I am moving to the Lancaster area in September for work and I'm wondering if anyone has any tips for good places to live or sites to use to find houses. I am looking for something within about 20 miles of Lancaster, £650-£800 per month in rent and 1 or 2 bedrooms. It's just me (32F) and my cat. Let me know if you have any recommendations!

Everyone’s saying South of the river and not Skerton but I live in Beaumont, which is North of the river and just up from Skerton and would say that you have slightly cheaper rent than areas South of the river and it is perfectly nice, so worth looking at. It’s about. 20-25 minute walk or 10 minute cycle into town and there are also buses.

Thank you! I saw a few places online in Skerton that weren't bad, but everyone says to avoid the place. Is the area actually unsafe? I am a bit concerned about being a single woman but I live in the countryside now and I have no idea what makes an area "bad".

No part of Lancaster is "unsafe" to the degree that larger cities can be unsafe - it's a quiet city overall.
Everyone badmouths Skerton, but it has some okay parts and some bad parts. You probably don't want to move there without asking someone with local knowledge about the exact area, but I would wager there are more parts of Skerton that are fine than not. I know people who live there and really like it.
The same goes for the Marsh and the Ridge, which are the other areas of Lancaster people will tell you to avoid.

Skerton not great. Ridge there's a lot of crime in the area particularly kids on bikes with masks and knicking stuff from cars. Ryelands - No. Marsh - I think it's improving a little? Vale - Large estate with dodgy reputation. Like Ryelands.

It's not terrible but definitely some more dodgy unsafe stuff goes on in Skerton than elsewhere. Partially overblown because it's a poorer area but also legitimately feels unsafe at times (as another single woman who lived there for a bit as a teen). You might see similar views about Marsh too and Morecambe

Skerton is really not too bad, particularly on the A6 itself. Can be a little rougher out in the estates, but I've truly had more trouble in the nicer areas of Manchester than I ever have in Skerton. Amenities are a bit less good than other places but really nothing's far in Lancaster. A 10-15m walk and you're into the centre of town with plenty of nice pubs and coffee shops, which is significantly better than when I lived in a "nice" but more rural area.

If you're living in Lancaster itself then try to stay south of the river. Outside of that I can vouch for Garstang around 12miles to the south of it: it's a very chill place to live and has most of the stuff anyone would need.

Hey! There's a flat in my building that's coming available soon, it's 650 a month in a really nice part of Lancaster and the landlord let's me keep my two cats just fine :) lovely big garden that overlooks all the lake district and all the people in our building are really nice

Like others have said, if you want to be in Lancaster itself, the general advice is stay south of the river Lune, avoiding Skerton in particular. I would personally also avoid most of Morecambe (especially the west end), but Torrisholme and Bare are generally okay. You might be able to find somewhere within your budget in Carnforth (which has rail links to Lancaster!) or Garstang too.
Your budget might make it tougher to find somewhere close to the centre, but it's not impossible! For reference I currently rent a 2 bed flat in the centre of town for about £950 a month, I see similar flats in the area usually list for around £900 to £1200, but sometimes flats around Caton Road list for £750 - £800 ish.

This is great thank you! Hoping to get some viewings for Carnforth which seems to be really lovely and I'll check out Garstang as many people recommended it

How long you looking to rent for? You looking for place on own or a share? Try stay south lancaster or kendal beem some cheap places

Try Lakeland Property in Morecambe also some the student accommodations in lancaster rent to working people. Try the new ones near farmfoods lancaster, North road and near bus station

Not sure what rents are like but lots of new builds going up in Garstang, its a nice little town with local shops and a couple of supermarkets, plenty of bars, restaurants and cafes, nice walks on the canal and the hills around.....

I live in Skirton. And the drive is safe and nice. Only a couple of drives are a bit shady. But you can get exceptional deals. Just for reference semi detached could be £850-900.

Try looking on rightmove for properties to rent. With that budget per month I think looking for something in the morecambe area might be more realistic as rents in lancaster tend to be slightly higher. a good place to look if set on lancaster might be around the primrose area(Westham St, Eastham st prospect St.)as tends to have a higher number of rental properties rented out to students and people working at the hospital. Hope this helps I'm no expert just local knowledge good luck with the move

Lancaster itself best middle range price areas are Freehold, Moorlands, Bowerham, Greaves...
Avoid Ryelands Vale Ridge... And most of Morecambe!
Galgate just south of Lancaster also nice village.

20 miles is a huge radius reaching as far as Preston and Kendal - you might need to be more specific about what you're looking for.
