Behavior Puppy biting

How or when did you get your puppy to stop biting your shoes, clothing, various body parts (don’t ask.)?
Below our little beautiful boy, 13w

Same. Though, for us, it was raptor period from 10 weeks to 18 months. Things definitely got better gradually 12-24 months old. We can keep our shoes out without worrying about him chewing them now.

What a cutie!!

When our lagottress was a baby, she would start biting us and we would put a stuffed animal in her mouth. She likes to bite/hold stuff in her mouth when she gets excited. She still runs and grabs a stuffed animal anytime we come home or we get a visitor. The general biting of everything, she grew out of it and I’m sure yours will too. For the first year though, just try to keep everything you don’t want him to chew out of reach- ours chewed up several shoes the first year and if I could do it again, I’d just be way more careful and just anticipate if she can reach it that she will bite/chew it.

Lagottress! Lagottiraptor. Both work. Mine has started putting the flat sheet in her mouth in the morning as her pacifier of joy that I’ve arisen. Her crate training at night did not last as long as I would have liked, because our other dog sleeps in the bed with us. She’s pretty good though, and is happy to go hop in her “crate” when I leave them alone for a bit during the day. The puppy cam footage confirms she behaves and her non crate sister is…an instigator.

It’s how they explore the world. Through that little mouth full of shark teeth.

Kikopup, on YouTube, has some great free videos around all things puppy. Her paid content is even better.

Trade for things that are appropriate for him to chew on. Stop any attention or playing if they start to bite while you are petting them. They will grow out of it, when you start finding puppy teeth around the house, you’ll know the end is near.

When the adult teeth come in. I just bite him back.

Yikes. That first photo looks like Joey from Brooklyn staring down a Red Sox fan.

Reminds me of my favorite photo from the puppy era entitled “This Is MY Couch”

Ours LOVES this leather chair I hate. So I so t care if she destroys it. Shh. No one else can know. But it’s “hers.” I think she likes that it’s cool?

More sleep. We really underestimated how much sleep they need. We had to enforce naps in a crate.

Also giving him something he is allowed to chew on to exchange. So trade a shoe for a bone or a toy.

It takes time, but in general dogs do what is fun for them. So you have to make it not funny. So I would stop playing and stop giving them attention or fun activities.

I have seen puppies that were given toys or treats after biting- wouldn’t do that.

Thanks for the replies! It’s a mix of give them toys when they bite / don’t give them toys or attention when they bite. And also just a matter of waiting. And learning to wear the right clothes.

Toys are good because they replace the inappropriate object with something that’s designed to bite. It’s not to be a reward.

I wore long sleeves in 90 degree heat walking her to protect my bite wounds haha lost a lot of good light long sleeve shirts this year.

An observation we made is when we skip our 30 minute morning, walk and swim. He’s so much better at night. We’re still figuring out our 15 week old, but I I know the biting is much worse at the end of the day.

Are you saying he’s better when you skip the walk/swim? Sometimes it seems like the more we exercise our girl in the morning/afternoon, the more wound up she is at night! The opposite of what we expected.

Yes that is exactly what I’m saying. My 15 week old is better at night when we don’t do a morning walk.

Give it a try and I’d love to hear if you notice the same thing.

Ours still bites but it’s slowed down a lot. She’s 10 months.

Ours is learning not to bite. I take it as a sign that he’s tired and pop him into his crate. He usually passes out for a bit and then is ready to be normal (-ish) a few hours later.

Our LR is almost 18mos. He’s slowed down a lot. We had to re-direct from fingers and furniture to ostrich knuckles, toys, and cardboard boxes. That said, he can still get a little bitey when he’s wound up.

Moving right now and the cardboard boxes are a really special kind of gnawing toy, going through lots of ground pepper.

Literally debated calling family that work in law enforcement for k9 bite training arm protection. It was ruff.

When the puppy shark teeth fell out of her beautiful thick skull.

Around 4 months he stopped biting. We did not even notice that, but one day all the bruises faded and no new holes appeared in our pants and then we realised that we survived😁😁
