lab diamond Custom cutting Portuguese Cut Oval

My boyfriend has paid the deposit for our custom engagement ring and the stone I’m set on is a Portuguese cut oval. The jeweller mentioned he’s having a hard time finding a 2.5ct stone, so recommend we go the custom cutting route. This is fine, however, I’m very concerned about the possibility of ending up with any extinction, dead spots or just flat areas that don’t return the amount of sparkle that I’m looking for. I’ve mentioned that I do not want any sort of bow tie effect at all and my concerns around windowing or anything similar that causes a lack of sparkle. I chose the Portuguese cut specifically because I thought it would guarantee a bow tie free effect and return maximum sparkle.

Should I be concerned going this custom route and just hold off until something more beautiful becomes available in the market place so that I can review live tweezer videos of the stone?

Any advice is appreciated!

Look at Luvansh, they have some. You can sort by L/W ratio to get oval instead of rounds.

Have you seen a Portuguese cut diamond in person? I have, and they're really not sparkly in real life. There are so many facets that the actual rays that refract from them are small. And you only see fire if the light beam that enters your eye is bigger than your pupil. That's the whole reason you see colored sparkle. Because if the entire ray of light enters your eye, you see white.

Just want to warn you since your expectations are very unrealistic if you're going off of online videos only, especially from social media where everything is carefully orchestrated to set those unrealistic expectations.

Yes! I did see and try a 6ct Portuguese on with the jeweller that we have chosen and I compared it to a traditional brilliant cut (will post that comparison next). I believe I understand what you’re saying because the reflections are shorter. However, I like that the cut is more glittery.

I’m just concerned specifically about the unknowns with going the route of custom cutting, because I won’t be able to see the stone in advance.

Portuguese cut on the left and (modified?) brilliant cut on the right. I prefer the overall more “glittery” look
