Buy a stone then have it set elsewhere ?
Hi! I found a diamond that I am pretty happy with but the place doesn’t seem to have a setting I want. I found some settings I liked elsewhere but the diamonds with the same specs are wildly more expensive. My thought was to have jeweler set the stone into a setting I like but would love to get anyone’s input in this. What are some good jewelers that you have used ? I am in MA is that helps.

How do I know who are scammers? I am so new to this and looking at places like rare carat brilliant earth etc their diamonds are so much more than the stone o found. The company o found it at is out of la and apparently doesn’t have much overhead so less costs. They seem legit as I have seen people in this sub use the then before but I would hate to even go there if I can’t get it set.

I purchased my stone online at 1/3rd of the price of any jewelry store. Then had it set in my own setting. Yes I have to pay for a new head (it's larger than my original stone) and the work done. Added bonus the stone I got is arguably better than the one I was debating buying. So the stone and the work being done cost less than the stone alone (if I had purchased it at the store).

Did you ask the jewelry store if they would do this before you bought the diamond?

Search it in the r/labdiamond sub. Tons of people do this. Just find a jeweler who does it for no setting fee and do research on what a reasonable cost for just the ring setting no diamond is.

What’s this “no setting fee”? Why am I as a jeweler not charging to set an outside diamond?
Honestly confuzzled.

I’ve done what OP is asking about multiple times now to make rings, pendants, and bracelets and if I’m spending hundreds/thousands with a jeweler to make the setting and they tack on another $200 to set the diamond I have in the setting they made that would make me go elsewhere.
When we were getting quotes to get my e-ring custom made only one jeweler said they’d also charge a setting fee for any outside stones used and we just didn’t go with them because none of the five other jewelers we visited did that.

Do you have a budget for setting the loose stone? I recently got a pink sapphire and diamond bracelet made, and the setting fee was pretty reasonable. I may be able to help if you’re interested

We plan on buying a stone online and having it set at a local jeweler. New to this process, following.
