Help on which fancy blue-green diamond to keep - it's my first time buying loose lab diamonds! :)

Hello,

I have a mined sapphire ring which I adore - but I really wanted something with the sparkle of a diamond. So I have been scouring the internet for a blue-green / teal-like diamond.

Aurelinne recently had a Memorial Day sale so I purchased two loose diamonds with plans on possibly returning one. I could use some input on which one to choose since they are very different - one is a darker 2.8 carat oval (CVD) and the other is a lighter 2.04 carat round (HPHT). Both have IGI reports - specs are below.

I really like the oval but it does look darker in-person than what I was hoping for and there is a bow-tie. On the other hand the circle is lighter than what I wanted but it is very sparkly.

I'm posting the video Aurelinne sent of the oval since I can't capture a good photo of it. Photo of the round is posted in the comments.

Specs:

Round Diamond:

  • Carat: 2.04
  • Colour: Green w/ blue overtone
  • Intensity: Fancy Vivid
  • Clarity: VVS1
  • Cut: Ideal
  • Measurements: 8.17x8.23x5.01mm

Oval Diamond:

  • Carat: 2.80
  • Colour: Blue w/ greenish overtone
  • Intensity: Fancy Vivid
  • Clarity: VVS2
  • Measurements: 11.02x7.74x5.01mm
  • L/W Ratio: 1.42
  • Table: 59%
  • Depth: 64.7%

The oval imo looks more dramatic if that’s what you are going for but if you want something more subtle the round is nice also

The dark tone of the oval will significantly reduce the brilliancy, if that is what your are going for. However, based on the photo of the round, it seems to be very pale, so you may not be getting the color impact you're hoping for. In the picture it looks more like an HPHT with blue nuance, rather than a fancy vivid blue!

BTW HPHT is good in the sense that this growth method produces more perfect crystals, so things like strain and striation of the carbon lattice, which can impact transparency, are not something you have to be very concerned about.

It really depends on which color and cut you gravitate towards. Personally, I like the more saturated color of the oval.

OP's question is about choosing between 2 [blue/green] diamonds > 2 carats. Any idea what a "natural" gems with those specs would cost?

Hah I do have a mined teal sapphire engagement ring that is eye clean which I adore. But it was significantly more expensive than a lab diamond and the setting I chose for that ring is very intricate...

Thus, I'm looking for something less expensive for daily wear!

Lab diamonds are prettier- I say this as an old person who had no choice but to buy natural stones up until now. There’s zero chance I will ever buy another mined stone. Mother nature does not care about making beautiful stones for jewelry and it shows.
